阿修羅としてはペンタゴン報道官の以下の非常に不可解な発言に注目したい。

"This does not represent the battle for Baghdad. What this is, is a powerful message that we can go where we want, when we want," Department of Defence spokesman Major Ben Owens said.

"We are not at this point going to say that this is the start of the Battle of Baghdad."

｢（宮殿占拠など一連の）軍事活動はバクダッド陥落をめぐる戦闘を意味しない。これらの活動はなにかというと、われわれは、いつでも、どこでも侵攻できる、という強力なメッセージを送っているものだ。｣

「われわれは、現時点では、これら一連の活動が、バクダッド陥落のための戦闘の始まりである、というつもりはない。」

えっ！？これほどおかしな発言があるだろうか？

少なくともバクダッド市内は、静謐を保っているようなのだ。つまりイラク情報相のいう、市内にアメリカ兵は一人も入っていない、という発言の側にむしろ実態が近いことを思わせる。

もうひとつだが、どうも舞台裏で停戦調停が進行中であり、時間を稼いでいる印象が強い。米国はこれ以上の死者を出したいとは思っていないはずだ。停戦調整がなされているとすれば最近妙におとなしいフランスが主導であると考えられ、ロシアも巻き込んでのこと、しかも、フセイン側も関与し、落とし所を模索しているのではないか。戦後体制の妥協点、利害関係の調整に入っているのではないか。

米英軍、少なくとも猛暑はメンドクサイんじゃないか。

基本的かつ極端にいえば、この侵略戦争について、米英の報道は一切信じてはだめ！

Current fighting is not battle for Baghdad: Pentagon

The battle for Baghdad has not begun, the Pentagon said early on Monday, as fighting raged in the Iraqi capital.
"This does not represent the battle for Baghdad. What this is, is a powerful message that we can go where we want, when we want," Department of Defence spokesman Major Ben Owens said.

"We are not at this point going to say that this is the start of the Battle of Baghdad."

The statement came as US forces reportedly seized three Iraqi presidential palaces, including Saddam Hussein's main facility in the heart of Baghdad.

Lieutenant Colonel Peter Bayer, operations officer for the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said US troops had "secured the main presidential palace" and another palace in the city centre as well as a third near the airport.

Bayer, speaking at Saddam International Airport outside Baghdad, said a US Army armoured force was attacking central Baghdad. "2nd Brigade is conducting their attack into the heart of the city," he said.

The sound of heavy firing rang out across Baghdad and sustained shooting from small and big guns continued incessantly Monday, AFP correspondents reported.

Heavy explosions had begun booming into the grey skies from around 6:15 am (0215 GMT), apparently from artillery fire to the west of the capital.
