Movies and TV shows like Star Wars, Roswell, Earth: Final Conflict, X-Files and Enterprise have brought the idea of aliens into pop culture. And the internet is full of sites about ET's. Religious fundamentalists claim aliens are manifestations of Satan. At the other end of the spectrum, enthusiasts say ET's are saving humanity. Some sincerely believe they are ET emissaries born as humans but really from another planet, plane, or cosmic dimension.

With so many conflicting stories about ET’s, a few questions need to be asked:

Are ET's real or the stuff of myth and fantasy?
If real, do they have physical bodies, or are they energy or spirit beings?
Are ET's always kind and helpful?
Could some be deceptive and harmful?

That aliens exist in some shape or form seems probable. The Catholic Church endorses inquiry into aliens. Assuming for a moment that ET's are real, what would they be like?

Aliens and Psi

Ronald Story cites scientific research suggesting psi abilities (mind-reading, etc.) increase with alien contact. Some believe that "dark aliens" or negative spiritual influences bestow paranormal abilities on insecure and vulnerable individuals, leading them to develop a superiority complex. It would be relatively easy to overlook painful personal issues if ET's were busy feeding you with other people's thoughts, false prophecies, and delusional ideas about being "special" and holy.

Spiritual Discernment

While most people see false prophecy in terms of a delusion or mental illness to be treated with medication, several religious traditions suggest another perspective--that of discernment. Sages and saints of most every stripe agree that the psyche is not an island. It's more like a computer connected to the internet. The mind can be infiltrated by spiritual hackers, traditionally regarded as "demons," "tramp souls," etc. Open to influences from beyond itself, the psyche's contents must be painstakingly discerned. Discernment is the use of reason and experience coupled with divine gifts to separate true and false interior perception, as well as as good and bad influences. As Henri Martin P.S.S. puts it:

The charism of discernment is a "a kind of supernatural instinct by which those who have it perceive intuitively the origin, either divine or not, of thoughts and inclinations submitted to them." (J. de Guibert, Lecons, p. 306). It is to be distinguished from revelation of the secrets of hearts, properly so called, made directly by God. In such revelations, which is extremely rare, objective certitude is absolute. In the case of discernment the chances of error lie in the subjective interpretation and use of the supernatural light received. Lacking an infused charism, ordinarily "God will assist by special interior light a gift of discernment acquired by experience and prudence in the application of the traditional rules of discernment." (ibidem).1

It can be fun to watch sci-fi programs about ET's. They point to a broader canvas and likely the next phase of humanity's place in the cosmos. But far too many ET enthusiasts blindly act out impulses without clear and honest thinking. ET or not, interior influences must be judged. Do ET prophecies come true or not? Do ET doctrines raise people up to their rightful human dignity or do they exploit and oppress in the name of some grand and equally obscure theory?
