Lord Levy tells of terror as gang ransack mansion

TONY Blair's close aide Lord Levy yesterday relived the "horrendous" robbery at his home that left him with a broken wrist.
The Prime Minister's special envoy to the Middle East and his wife were handcuffed by a masked gang who stole £80,000 in cash and jewels.
The 58-year-old millionaire said: "It has been an horrendous incident. My wife Gilda and I are in terrible shock.
"We are both coping but my wrist was broken."
Lord Levy was battered over the head with a shovel when the three thugs broke in and ransacked his £5million mansion on Saturday night.
The gang handcuffed him and his wife to chairs and demanded to know where their valuables were hidden.
Lord Levy said he was relieved his wife was not hurt.
"She is very distressed. Thank God she wasn't injured."
Last night there were fears the gang could have deliberately targeted Lord Levy, who is Labour's chief fund-raiser.
A source close to the peer, who did not want to be named, said: "There are suspicions this was a highly-organised and sophisticated crime operation.
"Because of his connections and his extremely sensitive role, vis-a-vis the Middle East, he has to be and is very careful. The initial fear was that paperwork and confidential information could have fallen into the wrong hands and a lot of checking is going on."
It is not thought the safe contained any sensitive papers relating to Lord Levy's role in the Middle East. Last night police were still searching for clues at the Labour tycoon's house in Mill Hill, North London, and experts were carrying out an overhaul of security.
On Monday, Lord Levy met former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, who was on a visit to London. As well as being a Government advisor, the former music industry boss is a personal friend of Mr Blair. He has been branded one of "Tony's cronies".
The two men are regular tennis partners and have become close despite their very different backgrounds.
The Prime Minister went to public school, then Oxford, while Michael Levy was born into a working class family in East London in 1944. He left school at 16, became an accountant and moved into the recording industry.
He set up Magnet Records in 1973, which was sold 15 years later for more than £10million.
He drives a Bentley and divides his time between his house in Mill Hill and a second home in Israel.
