Baghdad, Iraq-AP -- The government of Iraq is still in control of Saddam International Airport in Baghdad. That's the claim of Iraqi authorities who escorted reporters to the nearly-deserted airstrip today. U-S Central Command had reported that its forces were "in the vicinity" of the airport.

Three Iraqi Airways planes are still sitting on the tarmac, but the airport was nearly deserted and its departure lounge was covered with dust from last week's two-day sandstorm. Buildings along the nine-mile road that connects Saddam International to central Baghdad have been heavily damaged by coalition bombings.

Meanwhile, Iraq's Information Minister read a statement purportedly from Saddam Hussein, urging the Iraqi people to battle allied forces, and to "fight them with your hands," if need be. He also claimed Iraqi forces had killed scores of coalition troops yesterday at Basra in the south.
