U.S. Troops in Mosque Battle, BBC Says Hunt Saddam

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. Marines fought a fierce firefight at a mosque in northwestern Baghdad on the Tigris river on Thursday, a military source said.
A BBC correspondent reported from the scene of what appeared to be the same incident that U.S. Marines were searching a mosque in the belief that Saddam Hussein might be hiding there.

Recounting a dawn battle with what appeared to be Iraqi Special Republican Guards on the Tigris at one of Saddam's presidential palaces, BBC correspondent David Willis said:

"Having secured the area around the presidential palace, the order came through to search a mosque where it's thought Saddam Hussein may be hiding.

"Again, fierce fighting accompanied the Marines' arrival. Thick black smoke now hangs over the Tigris and the search of the mosque is currently under way."

He said a Marine was killed by shrapnel in the fighting.

A U.S. military source told Reuters that there had been fighting for some hours around a mosque in the Aadhamiya district of Baghdad.
