A federal judge ruled yesterday that the man who shot Ronald Reagan may visit his parents without staff from the mental hospital where he has lived for more than two decades.
District judge Paul Friedman granted John Hinckley's request over the objections of the Reagan family and the federal government, but attached strict conditions and rejected Hinckley's request to travel to his parents' home in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Hinckley, 48, has lived in a Washington hospital since he was acquitted in 1982 by reason of insanity of the shooting of Mr Reagan, his press secretary and two police. Mr Brady was left disabled. Hinckley said he shot Reagan to impress actor Jodie Foster.

Mr Friedman said Hinckley may make six day trips with his parents in the Washington area. If they go well, he and his parents will be allowed two 32-hour overnight visits near Washington.

"All of the evidence submitted to the court weighs heavily in favour of finding that Mr. Hinckley, under appropriate conditions, will not be a danger to himself or others," Mr Friedman said.
