A 40ft effigy of President Bush was toppled by protesters tonight in Trafalgar Square at the end point of the main anti-war march during the presidential state visit.

Up to 150,000 people joined the demonstration according to the organisers. Police put the numbers at 70,000.

Groups involved included CND, Socialist Workers, the Muslim Association of Britain and many peace groups. Many of the protesters appeared to be students.

The downing of the effigy was a parody of the Saddam Hussein statue-toppling in Baghdad in April. The crowd cheered and chanted: "Down with Bush" as dozens of camera flash bulbs fired.

In Trafalgar Square music blasted out from a stage at the base of Nelson's Column alongside screens showing images of war, caricatures of Mr Bush and Tony Blair and the crowd's political heroes including Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

More than 5,000 police officers were on duty in the capital to ensure the march ran smoothly. Protesters of all ages gathered to attend the march.

Extra security was laid on outside Downing Street as the crowd booed and jeered, hurling insults and gestures meant for Mr Bush as they passed.

Television reports said that the President had already left Downing Street before the demonstrators were allowed down Whitehall by police.

President Bush, asked today why so many people in Britain appeared to fear or even hate him, replied: "I would say freedom is beautiful. It is a fantastic thing to come to a country where people are able to express their views."

Pressed on why it appeared that so many people in this country hate him, he said: "I don't know that they do. All I know is that the people of Baghdad, for example, weren't allowed to do this up until recent history. I fully understand people don't agree with war. But I hope that they agree with peace, and freedom, and liberty."

Protesters were asked to help mark Ramadan by joining the Muslim population in breaking their fast. Food stalls were set up around the square.

Ron Kovic, the Vietnam veteran whose story was made into the Oliver Stone film Born on the Fourth of July, addressed the crowd in Trafalgar Square.

He urged Americans to take their country back from Mr Bush.

Anas Altikriti, spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, told the crowd that tonight would be a celebration of belief around the world.

"It is a night where once again we speak loudly, we stand proud and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers around the world who are victims of the policies of Tony Blair and George W Bush."

George Galloway, the Former Labour MP, described today's march as "unbelievable". He said: "This is the largest march on a midweek day that this country has ever seen - it is absolutely overwhelming."

Referring to Mr Bush, he said: "Tony Blair added insult to injury by bringing this ignorant, foolish and dangerous man to these shores and I think we are speaking for the majority of the country."

He went on: "We're speaking for the majority of people in the world who want Bush out and who want Blair out."

Bradford, Chester and Bristol were just some of the areas represented on today's protest. Foghorns blared and whistles were blown as the crowd chanted anti-war slogans.

A ring of stewards formed around several personalities at the head of the march, including Blur front man Damon Albarn.

Albarn said: "My reason is the same as those taken by people collectively today... and Bush's visit is an opportunity to re-express what they feel."

He called the protest a "smart march for smart people".

Bill Hoyes, 72, from Stevenage, said he had come along to call for greater involvement by the UN in Iraq. He said: "I'm opposed to Bush and Blair fighting an aggressive war and invading a country that could not defend itself.

"Hopefully we will get the UN in there soon but Britain and the US should have to pay all the costs."

Police warned earlier that hardcore trouble-makers would try to hijack the anti-war march, which began at 2pm. Teams of undercover officers had already spotted "known faces" in the capital, police claimed.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Trotter of Scotland Yard said he was expecting a "rump" of violent protesters to remain in the centre of the city after dark but said they would be dealt with "firmly if necessary".

Mr Trotter said there had been 50 arrests so far in Operation Saxon - the police effort surrounding Mr Bush's visit. There have been no arrests under the Terrorism Act.

Arrests have been for offences including assault, theft, drugs and possessing offensive weapons.
