キルクークではフセイン政権No2のイブラヒーム議長の捕獲失敗。
身柄を拘束したと云う最初の報道は、やはり焦りを表わしてたのでしょう。

U.S. Soldier Killed in Bomb Attack in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Dec. 2 - An American soldier was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy south of the tense Iraqi town of Samarra on Tuesday, the U.S. military said.

A spokeswoman said a convoy from the U.S. 4th Infantry Division was the target of an attack in the town, 60 miles north of Baghdad, where American troops say they killed 54 Iraqis in a bloody street battle over the weekend.

"A 4th ID convoy was attacked south of Samarra. One soldier died of his injuries," the spokeswoman said.

In Kirkuk, the U.S. military denied reports from some media outlets that Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the most wanted man in Iraq after Saddam Hussein and alleged mastermind of guerrilla resistance, had been captured in a raid Tuesday.

"He was definitely not captured in today's mission," Major Doug Vincent of the 173rd Airborne Brigade told reporters who accompanied troops on the raid in Hawija, near Kirkuk. Several other suspects were detained.

Kirkuk police chief Torhan Abulrahman said U.S. forces and Iraqi police had mounted the joint sweep in Hawija after information from one of Ibrahim's wives, captured earlier this month, suggested he was in the area.

A veteran political ally of Hussein's, he is sixth on the U.S. list of the 55 top Iraqi fugitives, and all those in the top five except for Saddam have been killed or captured.

The U.S. military said last month he was directly involved in attacks on U.S. troops and put a $10 million price on his head. A reward of $25 million is still offered for information leading to the capture or death of Saddam.

The Kirkuk raid came as Spain mourned seven intelligence officers killed in Iraq, another U.S. soldier died in a bombing and allies agonized over whether the occupation was worth the cost in blood.

State funerals were held in Madrid for the seven Spanish agents killed in Iraq and Spain's parliament debated the war.

Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar ruled out taking Spanish forces home.

"Withdrawal can never be an option in the face of terror. If we withdrew, all the efforts we have made until now would have been in vain. It would strengthen the power and strategy of the terrorists. It would be giving in to their blackmail," he told parliament.

A poll by the private Real Instituto Elcano think-tank a month ago said 85 percent of Spaniards thought the Iraq war "was not worth it" but were evenly split on the presence of the 1,300 Spanish troops in Iraq now.

The Spaniards, part of the U.S.-led alliance occupying Iraq, died when their unmarked vehicles came under fire south of Baghdad.

Weekend attacks also killed two South Korean contractors, two Japanese diplomats, their Iraqi driver, a Colombian contractor and two U.S. soldiers.

U.S. troops said they killed 54 guerrillas in a battle on Sunday to fend off ambushes on armored convoys carrying banknotes in the Iraqi town Samarra.

In Bangkok, Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai said on Tuesday that Thailand might consider withdrawing its 443 medical and engineering troops if it became too dangerous to work.

In Tokyo, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi insisted Japan would send troops, although Japanese media reported approval could be delayed after the two diplomats died near Tikrit.

Jeremy Greenstock, Britain's special representative to Baghdad, said London and Washington would "see this through to the end."

November was the deadliest month for American troops since the start of the war that ousted Hussein, with at least 74 killed in action.
