Project : TO SAVE THE IRAQI MARSHLANDS
Introduction:
The oldest water environment in the world in Iraq suffered from destruction by the hand of Dictator Saddam Hussein. UN reports said that more than 85% of the marshlands have been destroyed by diverting the path of Uphrit and Tigris rivers from that area and the life of more than 500,000 people have been affected by forced evacuation from their homes.
This environmental crime has affected thousands of birds and fish in certain seasons. More than that, the area has been attacked by different chemical weapons before the marsh were dried this has poisoned thousands of fish and the soil in that area that caused the tremendous increase in the number of the cancer patients in that area also the increase in the number of cases of the “Teratogenic Disorders by 20 times ”. The chemical can affect the DNA causes DNA damage that can cause the teratogenic disorder than cause cancer.
It is a big mistake to open water again to that area before doing an “Eco-Toxicological Pollutant” to trace the level of Pollutants. To open the water at this stage before cleaning the area can sweep the pollutants to other areas.
Visit to the marshlands
On 7/6/2003 I have visited the Irrigation Dept. at Al-Nasiria City (marshland city) South of Iraq and discussion was carried out with the engineers and scientists at that Dept. , then a site visit was carried out to the Marshlands area.
Summary of the Eco-Toxicological Tests
1- Screening for Eco-Toxicological Pollutants for soil and living organisms for the marshland areas that was affected by chemical weapons
2- Isolation and Identification of Bacterial Strains for Biodegradation of the Eco-Toxicological Pollutants
3- Biological removal for Eco-Toxicological Pollutants by spreading of Bacterial that is genetically modified on the polluted area to get rid of the chemical pollutants.

The project is to run for 2yrs workers needed :
-2 researchers
-10 technicians
-2 drivers
Cost $250,000
Total cost =5500,000+250,000=$800,000
