Congressional delegation in Baghdad when bombing occurs, none hurt

(08-19) 15:28 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Several members of Congress were touring military sites and meeting with the top U.S. civilian in Baghdad, with plans to speak later to United Nations officials, when a deadly truck bomb ripped apart the U.N. headquarters Tuesday.

"It was a shock," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R- Texas, who spoke with reporters by telephone after the delegation had left Baghdad and flown to Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Despite the explosion, the delegation planned to return to Iraq on Wednesday for more meetings.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., had set up a meeting with Sergio Vieira de Mello, the chief U.N. official in Iraq, who was killed in the attack.

"I thought it was important to meet with the U.N. envoy and to discuss the U.N.'s role with the coalition forces in Iraq," Cantwell said.

But mechanical problems with the delegation's C-130 plane out of Jordan delayed the 1:30 p.m. meeting at coalition headquarters, Cantwell said, so she tentatively set up a telephone call with Vieira de Mello for later. The bomb went off at 4:30 p.m.

None of the U.S. lawmakers was hurt, and the bombing did not alter most of their plans. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., who had temporarily joined the group for the day, was taken to an undisclosed military compound in Baghdad after the explosion.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said he and some others were meeting with L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, when they were interrupted by news of the bombing. They finished the briefing with Bremer and Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, who both then went to U.N. headquarters.

After the explosion, the delegation attended a scheduled reception with several members of the Iraqi governing council, said Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H.

Delegation members said the attack would not deter U.S. reconstruction efforts.

"The biggest danger we face and the largest cost would be to leave this job unfinished," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

"Our faith and resolve is unshaken here," said Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn.

Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., called the attack "a terrible blow to our efforts to put an international face on our efforts to bring reconstruction to Iraq."

They brushed off concerns that it would be dangerous for them to go back Wednesday. McCain said it appeared "very safe for the delegation to return to Iraq. We are very well escorted."

He called for more U.S. troops in the country. "I believe we may need more people and we may need different types of people," McCain said.

Sanchez told them troop size was sufficient, but Ford said he thought coalition forces could be represented better.

The delegation said they will head to Afghanistan, Istanbul and Cyprus after leaving Iraq.

In Jerusalem, meanwhile, three congressmen from New York City were on a bus a few miles from the Western Wall when a suicide bomber attacked another bus leaving the area, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 70 others.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., was headed to the Western Wall with fellow Democrats Eliot Engel and Gregory Meeks when the bombing occurred.

"We were a few miles away. We didn't hear anything, but we could see the aftermath of lights and whistles on the opposite side of where we were entering," said Weiner, who has criticized the Palestinian authority's efforts in the U.S.-backed "road map" to peace.

The congressmen had planned to meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, but that meeting was in doubt after the bus bombing.
