桜島南岳から上がった噴煙は、雨雲の中へ＝１５日午前１１時１０分
　１５日午前１１時７分ごろ、桜島南岳が爆発した。鹿児島地方気象台によると、爆発音と体感空振は大規模で、８合目まで噴石が飛んだ。上空が雲に覆われていたため、噴煙の高さは観測できなかった。爆発は５月１日以来１４日ぶり。
　爆発音が３段階の指標で「大」を記録したのは２００２年３月２０日以来、体感空振では同年１０月２０日以来という。

TOKYO (AP) - A volcano erupted in southern Japan on Saturday, shaking the nearby area with an explosion and spewing smoke high into the air, an official said. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

The explosion of Mount Sakurajima registered as "large'' on the Meteorological Agency's scale for both the sound and the strength of the tremors it caused, an official at the local agency office in Kagoshima said.

Officials could not tell how high the smoke rose due to cloudy weather, he said.

The 1,117-meter (3,686-foot) high Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes. Clouds of ash constantly drift from its crater. It sits in Kagoshima Bay, about 950 kilometers (590 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

An eruption in October 2000 blew ash five kilometers (three miles) into the air and blanketed a nearby city in dust.

Japan is among the most seismically active countries in the world, with 108 active volcanoes. The nation lies in the "Ring of Fire'' _ a series of volcanoes and fault lines that outline the Pacific Ocean.-AP
