Aljazeera television has aired a videotape showing three Japanese citizens captured by a previously unknown Iraqi group that vowed to kill them if Tokyo does not withdraw its troops from Iraq.

One of the hostages being held by the Saraya al-Mujahadin is a woman, the television said on Thursday.

The Qatar-based television aired a soundless video of the trio and their passports, adding that an accompanying statement had given Tokyo three days to meet its demands.

Aljazeera read a statement which it said the group addressed to "the friendly people of Japan".

"We are the sons of Muslim Iraqi people. We were friends and on good terms. Why did you betray us and support the US forces which have violated our soil, our sacred places and land and shed the blood of our children?

It is time to retaliate. Three of your nationals are now in our custody and you have either to withdraw or we will burn them alive. The time limit is three days from the date of broadcasting the videotape," said the statement.

Japan's NHK television identified them as two journalists and an aid worker.

The captives were named as as Noriaki Imai, Soichiro Koriyama and Nahoko Takato.

Imai, an aid worker, had left for Iraq on 1 April, NHK reported.

Earlier a senior MP from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party
told the Kyodo News Agency that he had been told by the government that three Japanese had been detained in Iraq.

Controversial mission

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has been one of the strongest backers of the US-led invasion of Iraq, a stance that has raised concern over Japanese troops being targeted.

Japan has sent 550 troops to the southern town of Samawa on a non-combat mission. It is Tokyo's riskiest military deployment since World War Two and critics also say it violates the country's pacifist constitution.

No Japanese soldier has fired a shot in action or been
killed in combat since 1945 and casualties could undermine
support for Koizumi's government ahead of Upper House elections in July.

A spokesman for Japan's Foreign Ministry, Shinichi Yano, said the government was still trying to confirm the reports.

Koreans seized

Eight South Koreans were also seized by Iraqi resistance fighters on Thursday, and one of them was later released, according to Seoul foreign ministry sources in a report by the Yonhap news agency.

A foreign ministry official said the eight were "all pastors" who had been travelling from Amman in Jordan to Baghdad in Iraq at the time they were captured.

South Korean ambassador to Iraq Im Hong-Jae was still in talks with the individual who escaped from detention, he said.

Another senior South Korean government official said Kim Sang-Mi, a female priest, was released.

The incident took place after two South Koreans were released on Tuesday after they were detained for 14 hours by Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr's militiamen.

Briton held

Meanwhile, a British civilian was kidnapped this week in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriya, the scene of heavy fighting between al-Sadr militiamen and Italian troops, said an occupation official on Thursday.

The official named the man as Gary Teeley, a British contractor.

A Foreign Office official in London confirmed that Teeley
was missing, but would not say what he was doing in Iraq or
comment on the manner of his disappearance.

"He is missing. We were first made aware of this on Monday,
April 5. We are in touch with his next of kin and the
appropriate military and civilian authorities," said a spokeswoman.

British media said Teeley, 37, was said to be a resident in the Middle East and had been working at a US airbase.
