Hostage rally: Powell warns Italy
Friday, April 30, 2004 Posted: 9:20 AM EDT (1320 GMT)

ROME, Italy -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has warned Italians not to send the wrong signal to kidnappers holding three of their countrymen in Iraq.
A day after the hostages' families led a peace march of several thousand people to the Vatican, newspapers quoted Powell as saying Italians should avoid giving the impression their government was willing to compromise.
The abductors had threatened to kill the three Italian captives unless Italians staged a "huge demonstration" this week to protest against the Iraq war.
But the relatives stressed the rally was a march for peace, not a protest. Many of those who joined the rally said they were not giving into the kidnappers' blackmail by attending.
Other participants said they were marching for peace and to protest against the Italian government's backing for the war. The rally was smaller than previous anti-war events in Rome; a pre-war march drew about 1 million people.
In an interview with several European newspapers while in Berlin, Powell said Italy should "do everything to find the hostages and free them."
"But also stay firm in confronting the kidnappers and terrorists, be very cautious and not give the impression of looking to find compromise," the Turin daily La Stampa reported him as saying.
"Otherwise, you will end up communicating, in essence, that kidnapping people bears fruit and that those who do it can use hostages politically."
Four Italian security guards were abducted April 12 near Baghdad. The kidnappers executed one of them a few days later and released a videotape Monday of the remaining three along with a demand for a massive demonstration in exchange for their lives.
Their plight has dominated Italian news reports, with relatives making daily pleas for their loved ones' safe return.
Italians largely opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq and the deployment of 2,700 Italian peacekeeping troops after the fall of Saddam Hussein. But many also appeared to be against giving in to the hostage-takers' demands, and it was unclear whether Thursday's rally would meet those demands.
"To accept blackmail is impossible," one man in Rome told Reuters.
"We'll demonstrate on May Day like every year and like every year we'll demonstrate for peace as well. We cannot do more than this."
Italy, the third-largest coalition partner in Iraq, has ruled out withdrawing its troops. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has meanwhile insisted his government is doing all it can to free the hostages.
Pope John Paul II sent a message to the marchers, saying he had celebrated a Mass for the captives on Thursday and for all those suffering in Iraq. He also appealed to the kidnappers to release the hostages.
