Occupation Forces Kill 5 Iraqi Civilians in Najaf, Chalabi Expected in the City
A spokesman of Muslim cleric Sayed Moqtada Sadr warned Tuesday that his fighters would attack any US military checkpoint between the holy city of Najaf and Kufa further north, saying the Americans provoked clashes Monday that killed five Iraqis, among which are a father and his two sons, and also wounded another 20 civilians. It was clear that resistance fighters were determined to confront US occupation aggressions, warning that the struggle against the occupation may continue for generations to come. An Iraqi resistance fighter said, "After the US occupation attacked us, we retaliated destroyed many of their vehicles. God willing, we will be as Sayed Moqtada Sadr said: time bombs in their faces. The 1920 revolution will come back. If they were able to overcome us, they will not be able to conquer the forthcoming generations. " This came after hundreds of mourners took to the streets of the holy city Monday night laying to rest Iraqis killed in US random fire earlier in the day. An Iraqi eyewitness said, "We were working at our stores, and then the US army filled the main street. But we kept on working and suddenly they began shooting at everybody. I wanted to take cover inside my store by they hit me with a bullet." Another eyewitness said, "Why all this blood, why don't they let us live in peace?" Meanwhile, a source from Moqtada la Sadr's office in the Holy city of Najaf said that Iraqi Governing council member Ahmad Chalabi is expected to arrive in the city on Tuesday. The source did not give further details about the purpose of the visit or whether Chalabi would be meeting with anyone from Sadr's office. A new mediation effort was launched Saturday by Iraqi police chiefs and tribal leaders with the involvement of the Najaf office of the Iran-based Grand Ayatollah Kazem Hossein al-Haeri.
