＞拘束されているイラク人に関してもテロリストと関係がある疑いが強く、戦争捕虜の扱いを規定したジュネーブ条約の保護に値する「正規軍の兵士とはいえない」と指摘。

　大量破壊兵器が見つからないこの現在「戦争の意義」とやらを持ち出すことも笑止千万なのだが、サダム以下の虐待を弁護しているウォールストリート・ジャーナル記事には大きな問題がある。

　つまり、拘束されているのはランダムに選ばれた無実のイラク人がほとんどだということである。ジュネーブ条約以前の倫理問題にさらされているのが今のアメリカなのだ。そもそも拘束されたイラク人に自慰をさせたりするのと、テロリストとどこが結びつくのだろう。

　問題は虐待、拷問があったという事実が問題なのだ。しかも対象は、テロリストなどではない。もっとも、ＷＳＪの記事は国際世論に対して何の火消しの役に立っておらず、こうした弁明は当のブッシュ政権ですらクラッシュするのはわかっているので使っていない。レジテマシーがあったらアラブ・メディアでブッシュはそもそもそのことをきちんと説明したというものである。こうした点についてはタブロイド紙産経は触れていない。

　権力の行き過ぎをストップするのがジャーナリズムの重要な役割であり、そこに意義がある。その点ＣＢＳは実に素晴らしい報道を行った。一方、権力の行き過ぎを詭弁で弁護し「虐待の意味」を誤魔化す歪曲報道を行っているのがつい先日まで「行き過ぎた日本人人質報道」をしたばかりの産経である。

　やはり産経はゴミだ。

Abu Ghraib, a former US interrogator at Baghdad's jail, said today that many of its prisoners were innocent Iraqis, picked up at random by US troops and questioned by under qualified intelligence officers. Former military intelligence officer Torin Nelson said in an interview with the Guardian newspaper many of the detainees at Abu Ghraib were "innocent of any acts against the coalition".

"I have read reports from capturing units where the capturing unit wrote, 'the target was not at home. The neighbour came out to see what was going on and we grabbed him'," Nelson said. Nelson, who served as a contractor at Abu Ghraib last year, said abuses were partly a result of an over reliance on private firms so eager to meet demand for their services that they sent staff ill-prepared to deal with intelligence work.

"They are under so much pressure to fill slots quickly. If you are in such a hurry to get bodies, you end up with cooks and truck drivers doing intelligence work," Nelson told the paper. The innocence of some detainees made them more likely to be abused because interrogators refused to believe they had been rounded up arbitrarily and regarded them as "tough targets" to be broken, he said.

Nelson, who resigned from his job in February, is listed as a witness in the official military report into the abuse scandal at the prison, the Guardian said. - Reuters
