Bush's Sister-in-law Plans Tell All Book

"Sharon Bush, the estranged wife of President George W. Bush's younger brother Neil, is planning to write a tell-all book about her two decades with the Bush family," The Observer reports. "Mrs. Bush is in the middle of a divorce battle with Neil Bush, and the fight has turned nasty on both sides." However, Mrs. Bush's "talk of a book may merely be an effort to ratchet up the pressure on Mr. Bush to give her a more generous settlement than he has offered in the past."

Meanwhile, the New York Post says Karenna Gore Schiff "just inked a deal with Miramax Books believed to be in the $200,000-plus range to do a book about unsung heroines of the 20th century in politics, civil rights, medicine, and law."

BUSH'S SISTER-IN-LAW TO "TELL ALL"
ABOUT THE SICKEST FAMILY IN AMERICA
April 16, 2003

W..'s Sister-in-Law Schleps Tell-All
About First Family

by Greg Sargent

Sharon Bush, the estranged wife of President George W. Bush's younger brother Neil, is planning to write a tell-all book about her two decades with the Bush family, The Observer has learned.

Ms. Bush, who lives in Texas, recently visited Manhattan to discuss her idea for the book with several publishing executives. She had a long lunch with biographer Kitty Kelley, who wrote a controversial 1991 portrait of Nancy Reagan and currently is researching her own book on the Bush family.

The two women discussed the possibility of Ms. Bush acting as an important source for Ms. Kelley in addition to writing her own book, Ms. Kelley's agent, Wayne Kabak, told The Observer. Such a turn of events could provide Ms. Kelley with invaluable inside assistance for her research on the family.

Mrs. Bush is in the middle of a divorce battle with Neil Bush, and the fight has turned nasty on both sides. The Observer has obtained a deposition given by Mr. Bush on March 4, in which he described his marriage as "broken" and "loveless."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Bush's talk of a book may merely be an effort to ratchet up the pressure on Mr. Bush to give her a more generous settlement than he has offered in the past.

Still, Mrs. Bush insists she has a good story to tell. She had a seat at the kitchen table as the family twice reached the pinnacle of American politics and power. She married Neil Bush in 1980, the year Mr. Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, was elected Vice President. During her 23-year marriage, the elder Mr. Bush and his eldest son, George W. Bush, were both elected President, while another member of the family, Jeb, was elected governor of Florida.

In her book, Ms. Bush wants to detail her disillusionment with the family. According to her associates, she has grown despondent about her treatment at the hands of the Bushes. She said family members have turned their backs on her ever since last year, when she learned that her husband wanted to end their marriage after carrying on an extramarital affair with one of Barbara Bush's former assistants.

But her disappointment with the family is only one of many subjects she wants to address, those close to her say. In her book, she has told associates, she hopes to show that the family has relentlessly managed its public image to a far greater extent than previously known

Ms. Bush's spokesman, Lou Colasuonno, a partner at the public-relations firm of Westhill Partners, confirmed that she wanted to write the book. "This will be the story of Sharon Bush's life inside one of the most powerful families in America," Mr. Colasuonno said. "She witnessed the evolution of a dynasty. She believes, and is prepared to reveal in her book, that the Bushes are far more pragmatic and calculating than has ever been seen before. She will show that the family orchestrates its public image from top to bottom. She will reveal that the family is in essence a political operation."

But one publishing executive expressed skepticism about Ms. Bush's ability to pull off the project. "I doubt that Sharon Bush would be able to deliver the goods to fill a whole book," the executive said. "She would be far more useful as a source to another future biographer than she would in her own right."

Neil and Sharon Bush are the parents of three children: Lauren, the supermodel, and teenagers Pierce and Ashley. Mr. Bush has offered his wife $1,000 a month, as well as some other assets, an offer she rejected in March.

Ms. Bush, who declined to be interviewed, is currently drawing up a book proposal and hasn't yet signed a deal with a publisher. But her idea has already stirred interest in Manhattan publishing circles. Ms. Kelley, for one, has taken a particularly keen interest in Ms. Bush's story.

"Kitty had a very long lunch with Sharon, and a great deal of information was put on the table," said Mr. Kabak, Ms. Kelley's agent at the William Morris Agency. "They talked about the possibility of Sharon writing her own book, as well as about the possibility of Sharon further cooperating with Kitty's book in the future."

At Ms. Kelley's instigation, Ms. Bush subsequently met with two top executives at William Morris to discuss her project, although the agency hasn't agreed to sign her.

While it's not yet clear if Ms. Bush will be able to offer up any explosive revelations, talk of her book plans is likely to give Karl Rove, the President's chief political adviser, something of a headache. That's because Neil Bush, the President's black-sheep brother, has gotten the family in trouble before. He played an infamous role in the catastrophic collapse of the Silverado Banking, Savings and Loan Association in the 1980's, costing taxpayers more than $1 billion. More recently, his plan for an educational software package for use in Florida's public schools raised questions about whether he was taking advantage of his brother Jeb's position as Governor. Now his divorce is threatening to create political complications for the family once again.

Ms. Bush, people close to her point out, has had a front-row view of the family drama for more than two decades. While Neil and Sharon Bush spent many years in Colorado, Ms. Bush has nonetheless been with the family at many gatherings at the White House, in Texas and at their vacation compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. She has witnessed many off-the-cuff conversations on everything from politics to baseball to race relations, her associates say.

In her book, sources said, Ms. Bush hopes to show that Barbara Bush has exercised a good deal more control over the family than previously revealed. She also wants to show that the relationship between the Bush brothers, as well as relations between the President and former President, have been more fraught and complex than previously known, her associates say.

Mr. Colasuonno declined to address details, but said: "This is a woman who has had some wonderful times with the Bushes and knows she's fortunate to have had a close-up view of two Presidencies. But she has seen the dark side, too. And she intends to provide a view of the family that everyone will want to read."

Spokesmen for the Bush family and the White House didn't return calls. Richard Flowers Jr., a lawyer for Neil Bush, declined comment.

Written Off

Whatever Ms. Bush's motive in pursuing plans for a book, she appears to be eager to air her disillusionment with the family. In her view, according to people close to her, the Bush family has more or less written her off, even though she sees herself as the aggrieved party. Ms. Bush likes to portray herself as a loyal and dutiful wife whose husband destroyed their marriage when he indulged in an extramarital affair..

Mr. Bush's affair with Ms. Andrews isn't in doubt; the New York Post wrote about the relationship in March. Rather than trying to conceal the affair, Mr. Bush explained, in the deposition reviewed by The Observer, that his marriage and couldn't be saved by a marriage counselor.

"I threw myself at the mercy of this counseling and havea?"have reached the conclusion that it is irresolvable, that our marriage has been broken," Mr. Bush said. "It's loveless. And there's nothing left to it. And there hasn't been for a long, long time. There's no affection. There's been very little sexual activity over the past 10 or 12 years -. Sorry if marriages fail. And I'm -I'm sorry ours is one of those."

Given the fact that the marriage had fallen apart and that her husband had been unfaithful, Ms. Bush had hoped that Barbara and the elder George Bush would lean on Neil to give her a fair settlement. She expected that the Bush clan, with its public emphasis on family values, would surely rally around her after what she saw as two decades of faithful service to the family. According to Ms. Bush's associates, she pleaded her case with Barbara Bush in several phone calls, asking the family matriarch for help in patching up the marriage and, subsequently, for help in winning a better settlement. But Barbara Bush politely but firmly rejected her pleas, the associates say.

Elizabeth Mitchell, the author of W: Revenge of the Bush Dynasty, a biography of the President published in 2000 and due out in paperback this summer, noted that Sharon Bush would be the first family insider to break the code of loyalty of the Bushes, a notoriously guarded family.

"This is significant, because members of the Bush family are always careful to avoid offering up any kind of personal insights," Ms. Mitchell said.

Indeed, other biographies of the Bush clan written by family members have tended to portray the Bush family as a goodhearted and wholesome Texas clan that is forever being sniped at by the East Coast liberal media establishment. For instance, this is how Barbara Bush, in her 1994 memoir, described Neil and Sharon's first meeting during his work on the elder Bush's Presidential campaign in 1980: "Neil had met and fallen in love with a darling young schoolteacher from New Hampshire, Sharon Smith. He not only won her vote but, thank heavens, her heart, too."

"The family's political savvy and psychological complexities are always played down, and Sharon's book could change that," Ms. Mitchell said.

Ms. Mitchell added that Sharon Bush's contribution, while perhaps likely to be short on explosive revelations, would nonetheless enrage the family. "A lot of people have gone up to the Bush family ramparts in search of real dirt and come away with nothing, so it's hard to believe that Sharon could lead us to true scandal," she said. "Still, her book would probably be a revelation to many people, and it would certainly displease the Bushes, who value loyalty above everything else."

In Ms. Mitchell's view, Ms. Bush's meeting with Kitty Kelley was of particular interest. "Kitty's book [on the Bush family] has been a big, hyped thing for several years now, but nobody knows if she has come up with the goods yet. If Sharon Bush and Kitty Kelley end up collaborating, Sharon could end up saving Kitty's project by becoming her very own Bush family Deep Throat.

PRESIDENT OFFERS ADVANCE CONGRATULATIONS TO SOON-TO-BE-FORMER SISTER-IN-LAW SHARON BUSH ON DECIDING TO KEEP HER FESTERING CRAP-TRAP SHUT IF SHE WANTS TO LIVE TO SEE CHRISTMAS

Statement by the President

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. Today, amidst my grueling schedule of delivering speeches to convince the war-flushed Joe Sixpack set that they benefit from tax cuts for Donald Trump, I wanted to take a minute to say a few words to my used-up sister-in-law Sharon, who is at this very moment entertaining the suicidal idea of profiting from a tell-all book about my proud, salt-of-the-earth family of petrochemical millionaires.

Sharon, I know you and I have never been particularly close. When our kids were growing up together, and we'd all convene in Washington or Kennebunkport for the holidays, most of the time I was much more interested in getting to the bottom of a fifth of Cuervo than listening to you prattle on about God knows whatever worthlessness you think defines you as a person. Besides, you were always so sour, like you were convinced that just because you've got that brassy bottle-blonde hair, that my mom couldn't order you to help Jeb's Mexi-bimbo wife Columba pick up Millie's messes off the lawn. But that's all in the past now, and I'm confident that you've forgiven me personally for that New Years Eve I vomited on you.

Whatever our differences may be today though, I know that you know that current GOP fund-raising literature stresses that my parents raised us Bush boys to adhere to the highest moral standards. As such, I know you realize that when my baby brother Neil dumped you and your three halfwit children to start slithering his Dockers python into my mother's personal assistant, that he was most certainly compelled to do so only by his unshakeable belief in "family values." Furthermore, I know that you accept that when Neil single-handedly wiped out the life savings of thousands of thankfully powerless blue-collar grunts by using Silverado Savings and Loan as his own personal piggy bank, that he was also driven by the same unflappable commitment to Christian decency and brotherly love that so defines my perfect bloodline.

Over the years, I know you've been unfortunately privy to many a private conversation between the superior male members of the Bush family. Indeed, whether it was doing your womanish duty as a piece of human lawn furniture, holding two bowls of pork rinds and Chee-tos while the men folk played horseshoes, or pretending to understand while we laid out plans for 21st century Muslamian genocide, I know you soaked up many of our most candid and unguarded moments not unlike an ultra-absorbent TodayR contraceptive sponge.

I remember one Thanksgiving in particular, while Marvin and dad were giving their hilarious annual blackface performance of "The Aunt Jemima and Uncle Remus Follies," I looked behind me and noticed that not only were you the only one not busting a gut, but you had this pained, weak look of liberal guilt in your eyes. Then, at the climax, as Marvin danced a crazed jitterbug while clenching the entire turkey carcass in his teeth and dad cried, "Auntie Jammie, Unkie Remus sho nuff wansa get jiggy wif yo ass!," you had the gall to avert your eyes and leave the room! I knew right then and there that you weren't cut out for the Bush league.

And so today, with my perfect family having so righteously shut you out like the cheap trash that you are, I know how tempting it might be to sit down and put pen to paper about your wholly inaccurate recollections. I know how exciting it must seem, meeting with all those fancypants diseased homo New York City publishers, and snarfing down fish eggs and champagne for lunch with Kitty Kelly. But I also know that at the end of the day, you're smarter than to surrender to the temptation of delivering a massively damaging political blow to the hand that feeds your cellulite-encrusted ass. And I know that you're smart enough to turn off the goddamned answering machine and start taking my mother's livid phone calls guaranteeing your life in exchange for your silence, with a monthly allowance thrown in that's still big enough to cover the interest on your Lord & Taylor Card balance.

It's been a long strange trip Sharon, but I want to congratulate you in advance for accepting our final offer. Neil is our family's Fredo. He is a pussy embarrassment to us, and was doubtless a terrible lay for you. But at the end of the day, the family must prevail, and that's why you must simply go away. Whether that's the "staying out of the media spotlight" kind of going away, or the "permanently vacationing inside the concrete footing of an off-shore oil rig" kind of going away, well that's up to you, sister.

Thank you, and God Bless America.

The Strange Death of the Woman Who Filed a Rape Lawsuit Against Bush

by Guest Writer

Jackson Thoreau

November 18, 2003 ? Early one Saturday afternoon in July 2003, I made a simple phone call to Margie Schoedinger, a Texas woman who filed a rape lawsuit against George W. Bush in December 2002. I expected to leave a message on a machine, so I was caught a little offguard when Schoedinger answered.

She, too, sounded somewhat surprised I had called, saying she hadn’t heard from many other reporters. But she talked to me for a few minutes about the legal action.

"I am still trying to prosecute [the lawsuit]," said Schoedinger, a 38-year-old African-American woman who lived in the Houston suburb of Missouri City. "I want to get this matter settled and go on with my life."

Well, Schoedinger hasn't gone on with her life. In fact, three months after I spoke to her, she died in an apparent suicide. And this matter remains unsettled.

When I asked her in July 2003 about the lack of media coverage, Schoedinger said she wasn't seeking publicity. She said she did not even know about a December 2002 article in the Fort Bend Star, the only U.S. mainstream media outlet that covered this story, to my knowledge. The Fort Bend reporter, LeaAnne Klentzman, said she even went to Schoedinger's home and talked to a man there, who said she could not come to door. While I reached and spoke to Schoedinger on my first attempt, maybe she wasn't ready to talk back in December.

Anyways, Schoedinger said she was surprised the case wasn't covered more because "it is true......People have to be accountable for what they do, and that's why I'm pursuing it."

To be sure, Schoedinger's accusations - which include being drugged and sexually assaulted numerous times by Bush and other men purporting to be FBI agents - are bizarre and hard for most people to believe. But her story fits in with those told by a growing number of people who say they were used as guinea pigs or whatever by members of the CIA or another U.S. agency who wanted to test out the latest mind-controlling drug or just have a strange form of release. And her death - let's just say government agents have made murders look like suicides before.

In her court petition, Schoedinger said police in Sugar Land, another Houston suburb where she said some assailants linked to Bush attempted to unsuccessfully abduct her from her car shortly before the 2000 election, refused to take a report or do anything about that incident. She filed a lawsuit against the Sugar Land department and said that in preparing its defense, Sugar Land police found out that she dated Bush as a minor. I didn't get a chance to ask Schoedinger about that tie and didn't meet her in person, but her driver's license listed her as being 5-foot-8 and weighing 125 pounds, for what that's worth.

The Fort Bend Star story quoted a Sugar Land police captain saying his department had no record of any complaints by Schoedinger. All he had to do was what I did - go to the Fort Bend County Internet site and do a simple search on Schoedinger's name in the area of civil court records. I found the lawsuit Schoedinger filed in December 2000 against Sugar Land police, and it even had numerous responses by the department's attorneys in that case.

Just wait. This story gets stranger.

When I started asking Schoedinger about certain details of the case, such as alleged surveillance at her home and if she was still legally representing herself, she politely ended our conversation. "I need to see what has been written," Schoedinger said. "I feel like it's best for me to end our conversation."

Obviously, she had learned to be careful about what she said and to whom she said it. I could understand her being leery about talking about her situation with a stranger over the phone.

But I remember being puzzled by Schoedinger’s attitude after hanging up the phone. I wondered that if she had made up such a wild story, why she didn't come up with something a little less outlandish, in which people couldn't necessarily dismiss her as a kook. I wondered why she didn't seek publicity to at least provide some form of protection. I've long learned that being as public as possible is one of your best defenses against rogue intelligence agents. But she didn't even seem to want any media to cover her story. I told several writers I knew, some of whom tried to contact Schoedinger. None succeeded, as far as I know.

I remember thinking, "I hope she doesn't wind up on the wrong side of a gun." And sure enough, in late September, Schoedinger did.

The Houston Chronicle wrote a bare-bones obituary that stated only that Schoedinger "expired" on Sept. 22, 2003, and her burial was at Houston Memorial Gardens.

I called the Harris County Medical Examiner's office, and a clerk told me the cause of death: a "suicide" by a "gunshot wound to the head." I hung up amid bombs going off in my mind.

For one, using a gun to commit suicide is predominantly executed by males, according to psychiatrists and other sources like pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. Women are more likely to overdose on drugs, although the number of gunshot suicides among women has increased in recent years.

Besides Pravda and Internet ezines - one of whom referred to Schoedinger as "deranged" - I haven't seen stories on this strange death of a woman who filed a rape lawsuit against the U.S. president and wound up dead nine months later. I can't say I'm surprised. Or even angry. I don't know what the hell to think. All I know is I was one of the last - if not the last - reporters to speak to Schoedinger, and she didn't sound "deranged" to me in July 2003. She sounded like someone who had gone through something weird and was trying to sort it out. She sounded like someone who wanted the truth to come out. And now she's dead.

If this had happened to Clinton when he was in the White House, do you think the story would have been covered non-stop on FOX, CNN and the right-wing talk shows? Do you think we'd have reporters asking Clinton and his people about this death in press conferences? Is FOX unfair and imbalanced to the point of being "deranged?"

There are some more odd twists to this case. I also found a 2002 criminal case related to Schoedinger in which Christopher Schoedinger, her husband, allegedly struck her. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to a year in jail. Christopher Schoedinger had also filed for divorce. Then since 1997, Margie Schoedinger had filed for at least five assumed business names for various ventures - including a communications firm, health and beauty business, travel agency and publishing company. Could a "deranged" person start all those businesses or even know how to file a lawsuit?

Schoedinger's lawsuit can still be viewed on the Fort Bend County site at http://ccweb.co.fort-bend.tx.us/localization/menu.asp - then go down to the bottom and click on civil court. Then type "schoedinger" in the plaintiff box and click search. You should find another lawsuit she filed against Sugar Land police, as well.

I can really understand media members being intimidated, even frightened, of the Bush administration. As I've detailed before, these are not Boy Scouts running the show. The Schoedinger death is just the latest in a string of strange ones surrounding the Bush family - Bush biographer J.H. Hatfield, Sen. Paul Wellstone, Sen. Mel Carnahan, and others that are detailed on various sites, including at http://members.boardhost.com/gwbush/msg/362.html.

For the record, I contacted Bush's media office about Schoedinger and have yet to hear back. Now that I live in the Washington, D.C., area, I can go down to the White House in person and try to get someone to speak to me about this case. As expected, I haven't had much luck with the Fort Bend County and other Texas authorities. So maybe I'll stand outside the White House, holding a sign saying, "Who killed Margie Schoedinger?" and passing out copies of my column on the case. It would make about as much sense as anything else in this matter.

For all I know, maybe Schoedinger did kill herself. Maybe she dreamed up a lot of this stuff. But I don't know, am I "deranged" to think it's weird that in this mass-media, detailed-information age, so few people are even asking any questions about how a woman who filed a rape lawsuit against the president could be dead less than a year later?
