Sadr Aide Hits Out At Japan's Decision To Keep Army In Iraq

KUFA, Iraq, Aug 13 (AFP) - A representative of Shiite Muslim militia leader Moqtada Sadr on Friday lashed out at Japan for deploying a small contingent of soldiers in the southern city of Samawa.

"We used to say that Japan had suffered from US weapons of mass destruction in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But today, we see Japan carrying weapons in the face of the Iraqi people, although it says it is defending the people of Iraq," said Sheikh Jabir al-Khafaji, Sadr's representative in the southern town of Kufa.

"Is it right that those who want to defend people carry arms on it?"

Criticising Japan's decision to keep the army in Iraq, Khafaji said, "Thank God, the Iraqi people are not in need of your donations. Our hearts begrudge the occupation and those who stand with it."

Last month Japan vowed to keep its troops in Iraq despite an alleged threat by suspected senior Al-Qaeda member Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi.

Japan, one of Washington's staunch supporters of the Iraq war, has around 550 troops in the southern Iraqi city of Samawa providing humanitarian aid.
