イギリス元副首相らがイラク戦争でブレア批判

大量破壊兵器の嘘関しては、he's one of those people who deceived himself first(彼は最初に自分を騙す連中の一人)などと、イギリス人らしい皮肉たっぷり。

Former deputy PM slams Blair over Iraq war
LONDON (Aljazeera) - Former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Heseltine has accused British Prime Minister Tony Blair of "lying" to take Britain into war on Iraq.

Fellow Conservative veterans Lord Hurd and Kenneth Clarke have joined Lord Heseltine in criticizing Blair's stand on the crisis in the Middle East. Former Foreign Secretary Lord Hurd and ex-Chancellor Mr. Clarke said that Blair lied about his fears over Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, Lord Hurd also suggested that Blair had "deceived himself" about the war.

"I don't think he deliberately lied, because I think he's one of those people who deceived himself first," he said. He added that Blair's misjudgment was so obvious that he could not be trusted again in similar situations.

"He persuaded himself that it was not necessary to ask all the awkward questions about the power, it was simply necessary to take up and echo and repeat the arguments that President Bush was making. "Well, he was wrong. I'm not in favor of wittering on about him making an apology."

The criticism from the three major figures from the Thatcher and Major administrations go beyond the formal position of Michael Howard's current Conservative frontbench. All three rejected the decision to invade Iraq last year. All three ex-Cabinet ministers also criticized the redeployment of the British forces to more risky zones near Baghdad. Lord Heseltine, a former Defense Secretary, said that the move was far too big to be strictly operational, as the Government claimed.

He related the decision to the upcoming presidential elections in the U.S., and condemned the commitment to remove the 850 men by Christmas as "militarily extraordinarily ill-judged".

Lord Hurd also branded the redeployment as "a highly political decision," while Mr. Clarke said that it was "absurd".

"What he was announcing was moving under direct American command in the Sunni triangle, as part of the attack on Falluja. It is a major, major change in the deployment of our troops." Mr. Clarke said.

Asked whether he considered Mr. Blair a liar, Lord Heseltine replied: "I think he has lied about the situation in the Middle East. "We were told that there was a threat. We were told there were weapons of mass destruction. There were no weapons of mass destruction; there was no threat."

Blair's persistence that he had honestly believed the intelligence- that had turned out to be faulty- was dismissed as "semantics" by Lord Heseltine, who said that Blair was "trapped" into invading Iraq in order to satisfy his American allies. Former prime minister John Major said: "You can't take part in a war as we are and agree you will not put your troops in the most dangerous position if your allies are doing so. It would have been very difficult for the government to say 'no' once they were asked." And he added: "British troops will be there for many, many years we are not near the beginning of the end of this saga."
