Saturday, 23 October 2004.

Al-Fallujah, ar-Ramadi Province.

The truth about US claims to have arrested a lieutenant of Abu Mus‘ab az-Zarqawi.

US occupation troops on Saturday near al-Fallujah arrested an Iraqi named Ghanim Hamid Saqr, 37 years old, claiming that he was a “close associate” of their elusive nemesis Abu Mus‘ab az-Zarqawi.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah has learned, however, that Saqr was formerly an iron worker in a plant in al-Fallujah. He lost his work with that establishment and instead began to buy and sell cars. When he was arrested four men were with him. They are residents of ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah (a settlement south of al-Fallujah) and had come to al-Fallujah seeking to buy winter clothing.

The correspondent writes that Saqr is a simple fellow with no connection to az-Zarqawi. But the US has been trying to prove that az-Zarqawi is staying in al-Fallujah to justify their repeated assaults on the people of the city, and so from time to time claim to have blown up “safe houses” of his followers or arrested his “close associates” in the leadership of the at-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad organization. All such claims have of course been lies.

US forces arrest governor of al-Fallujah.

US forces on Saturday arrested Mahmud Ibrahim al-Jarisi, the governor of al-Fallujah as he returned to the city from Baghdad. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Fallujah reported that al-Jarisi regularly travels to Baghdad every Thursday and Friday to visit his family there. When he returned Saturday to resume work in al-Fallujah, however, he came to a US command post east of the city where he was detained for an hour and a half. Then his identity documents were taken from him, he was blindfolded, and led to prison.

After that, three US aircraft - a Chinook and two more Apaches - appeared in the area. The Chinook, escorted by one Apache, carried away the hulk of the wrecked helicopter. Pro-American Shi‘i cleric promises hellfire to anyone not voting in US-staged “elections.”

The pro-American Shi‘i clerics are eager to try to rise to power in the country with the help of the US occupation of the country.

US-appointed regime set to expand prisons in occupied Iraq.

When the US invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003, US officials devoted considerable propaganda attention to the claim that the regime of Saddam Hussein was repressive and operated vast prison networks. Today it has been revealed that those prisons are too small to hold the large numbers of Iraqis being rounded up by the new order. As a result the existing prisons - including the notorious Abu Ghurayb camp - are to be expanded and new facilities are to be opened up.

A high ranking source in the Iraqi puppet “interior ministry” has told the London Arabic newspaper al-Quds al-‘Arabi that a project is underway massively to refit Abu Ghurayb prison. The project includes an expansion of the facility, constructing new larger wards to hold a larger number of prisoners and detainees in the future.

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, added that the al-Hakimiyah prison, which was used by the secret police in the former government, is now undergoing remodeling and expansion.

The interior ministry is also looking at the specifications of buildings and jails in the ar-Ridwaniyah area of Baghdad, with a view to developing them for use as prisons in preparation for the coming period.

Al-Hakimiyah prison was taken over as a headquarters by a party known as Hizb Allah after the American occupation in spring 2003. That organization sought to turn it into a museum to show visitors the dark cells and corridors. Now the building has been taken over by the recently established US-installed Superior Criminal Directorate.
