Tawhid Wal Jihad Issues 48 Hour Threat As Hostage Supporters Ralley
Oct 28, 2004
JUS News Desk

Tawhid wal Jihaad has released a video showing 24-year-old Japanese captive Shosei Koda begging for his life. Koda, is shown in the video standing in front of the black banner wearing a white T-shirt and has shoulder-length hair. At one point, the video cuts to Koda kneeling before three men in black masks and clothing holding AK-47s.

"They asked me why Japanese government broke the law and sent troops to Iraq," Koda said in halting English. "They want Japanese government and Koizumi prime minister, they want to withdraw the Japanese troops from Iraq or cut my head." Koda then repeats roughly the same message in Japanese

Tawhid wal Jihaad said they will give the Japanese government 48 hours to comply.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said today that Japan has made little progress contacting the Koda's captors in what he says in an effort to negotiate his release however yesterday he said he would not meet the demands. "I cannot allow terrorism and cannot bow to terrorism," he said in Japan.

About 550 members of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (SDF) are stationed in the relatively calm southern city of Samawa, in the Shiite Arab heartland. The Japanese government says the troops are there on a strictly humanitarian mission, charged with rebuilding schools and helping improve sewage drainage and water supplies. Though small, the Japanese deployment holds strong diplomatic significance for the Japanese government, which is pushing to transform its Self-Defense Forces into a real military and has lobbied for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Shosei Koda is not a member of the SDF but is said to be in the country carrying out humanitarian work. JUS has received several letters from Japanese peace organizations and supporters pleading for his life to be spared.

Following are some of the emails we received:

Dear Friends In Iraq,

We are Japanese people who want to withdraw Japanse Self Defence Force (SDF) from Iraq. The Japanese young hostage, Mr. Shosei Koda, 24 years old, is just another one of us who wants to help Iraqi people.

He doesn't work for Japanese government nor for SDF. We will continue our effort to withdraw Japanese SDF, so please do not kill him. He is your friend, not enemy. Please take action to save his life.

In solidarity,

Dear Editor,

I am one of many Japanese people who want Japanese Self Defense Force (SDF) out of Iraq. I am also personally working with Americans who want the US troops out of Iraq. We are working together to make this happen.

I am very sorry for all the damage and suffering of Iraq caused by this illegal war and invasion. The US should never bomb Iraq. I hear the grief of Iraqi mothers and fathers who lost their children. I am grieving as I hear the death of so many Iraqi people.

The Japanese hostage, Mr. Shosei Koda is 24 year-old young man who wanted to help Iraqi people. He doesn't work for SDF nor Japanese government. He went to Iraq for humanitarian
reasons and he is your friend, not enemy.

Please save his life any way you can. Please spread the information that this Japanese young man is a volunteer who wants to help Iraqi people. Do not kill him.

We will continue our effort to withdraw Japanese SDF and all foreign troops from Iraq.

Love, peace and solidarity,
