Tuesday, 12 October 2004.

US suffers second biggest defeat in Iraq. 80 percent of American forces withdraw from al-Latifiyah - al-Yusufiyah area south of Baghdad after failed offensive.

The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that under heavy blows from the Iraqi Resistance, US forces on Tuesday completed their withdrawal of 80 percent of their Marine forces from the al-Latifiyah - al-Yusufiyah area, leaving only 500 Marines there.

The pull-back began on Monday evening, and involved withdrawing the troops to three positions. One group withdrew to the US base at Saddam International Airport. Another part of the US force pulled back to the Polish-American base in al-Hillah. The remainder retreated to the US base in the agricultural area northeast of al-Fallujah.

US forces reportedly sustained heavy casualties in the course of their offensive south of Baghdad over the last few days, in particular in incidents like that where a 6-meter Ra‘d missile blasted into an American camp on Sunday night.

The aim of the US offensive on al-Latifiyah and al-Yusufiyah was to destroy the Resistance forces that could encircle American troops when they launch their planned offensive against the defiant city of al-Fallujah. During the American siege of al-Fallujah in spring 2004, the Resistance struck at the rear of the attacking Americans’ lines from four directions - al-Latifiyah, al-Yusufiyah, Samarra’, and Abu Ghurayb. Using massive high-tech firepower and at the cost of heavy civilian casualties, US forces last week managed to take almost half of Samarra’ out of Resistance hands. The Resistance, however, continues to pound the US occupation forces and their stooges from positions ringing Samarra’, denying the invaders a victory there too.

Resistance cuts road shutting off fuel supplies to US forces in al-Latifiyah area, as Americans devise propaganda campaign.

Iraqi Resistance forces in al-Latifiyah have cut the road to the petroleum production station used by fuel tankers that supply the US forces in the area. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that five fuel tank trucks, three belonging to the US military and two owned by the puppet so-called “ministry of petroleum” were destroyed in a Resistance attack.

Meanwhile the correspondent has learned of an effort by the US military to use Iraqi fuel trucks to transport fuel to the US military. That way, when the Resistance attacks the trucks, the American side can claim falsely that the Resistance is trying to cut off fuel from the Iraqi people. The correspondent wrote that it is likely that satellite news networks might pick up that manufactured American story and try to gain propaganda points with it.

Two foreign truck drivers killed trying to deliver fuel to US military occupation.

Two foreign truck drivers were killed when three fuel tank trucks were destroyed in a Resistance attack in al-Latifiyah, 25km south of Baghdad. After loading up with fuel in the al-Yusufiyah refinery, the truck convoy was ambushed at about 7pm Tuesday evening on the highway in al-Latifiyah by Resistance fighters firing RPG7s and BKCs. Three white “civilian” Mercedes Ektrus tankers were destroyed.

Also at dawn the US bombed a restaurant in the an-Nazal neighborhood of al-Fallujah. The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam in the city reported that the American strike destroyed the two-story restaurant. At that early hour only four employees were in the establishment. One came out, but three were still under the rubble, their fates unknown when the correspondent filed his report posted at 11:40am local time (10:40am Mecca time).

Baghdad.

US raids al-Karakh district in Baghdad, arrests civilians, including children.

The al-Karakh district of Baghdad awoke Tuesday to find US forces storming in with 15 Bradley armored vehicles and about 100 men supported by two Apache helicopters. The al-Karakh correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the US troops entered the area at about 5:30am local time and rounded up 25 local Iraqis including a number of children. All those arrested were civilians, the correspondent stressed, none having any connection to the Resistance.

When US forces set out to leave al-Karakh at about 7:30am, Resistance fighters attacked them with C5K rockets, disabling one Bradley armored vehicle. No word on US casualties was available.

Resistance shakes “green zone” with powerful Grad rockets.

Iraqi Resistance forces at 8:25am Tuesday morning fired two powerful Grad rockets at the Republican Palace in Baghdad - called the “green zone” by the invaders and used by the Americans as the headquarters of the occupation of Iraq.

The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the first rocket struck near the headquarters of the US command inside the “green zone.” Informants report that the blast inflicted casualties in dead and wounded.

The second rocket slammed into the taxi stand for the ar-Rashid Hotel, also within the top security “green zone” and reserved for agents and servitors of the occupation. The blast destroyed several Humvees and “civilian” vehicles belonging to the CIA. Black smoke could be seen rising from the blast site, proving that vehicles had sustained direct hits.

The “green zone” is the target of daily bombardments by the Iraqi Resistance.

The Americans, meanwhile, had fled from the scene of the attack leaving their Iraqi stooges to their fate. A half an hour later, another American patrol arrived to collect the bodies.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent noted that whenever there are engagements in which both Americans and Iraqi puppet troops are killed the Americans typically pick up only the American bodies, leaving the corpses of the Iraqi puppet troops for Iraqi puppet troop patrols to pick up. Similarly American wounded are taken to the Ibn Sina Hospital in the high-security “green zone,” while the Iraqi casualties go to more humble hospitals outside the closed American zone.

Bomb disables US vehicle.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb blew up under a US column of four vehicles on the road between ad-Dulu‘iyah and Samarra’, disabling one armored vehicle.

Fighting rages on Hit front as Resistance traps US forces.

In a dispatch posted at 6:30pm Mecca time (7:30pm local time) the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Hit reported that clashes still continued at that hour in the area of Hit and al-Hadithah, but that the intensity of fighting was less at that hour than it had been earlier in the day and the previous night.

Resistance forces succeeded in surprising and completely encircling US troops for 24 hours in the ash-Shatt (“Riverbank”) area in Hit, and extremely fierce fighting raged in that area in which river gunboats took part. The Americans remained besieged in that part of town until US F-16s came in and broke the encirclement by dropping large-size container bombs each full of anti-personnel cluster bombs.

The large-size container is the equivalent of 16 regular container bombs, each releasing 3,000 cluster bombs. Thus a total of 40,000 cluster bombs were dropped on Hit as US forces sought to escape their encirclement. Not surprisingly, the targets of the unguided cluster bombs included civilians. Between 25 and 28 Iraqi private homes were destroyed Monday night and Tuesday in the course of the savage US bombing.

Forty US Marines were killed in the battle. Twenty-five Resistance fighters were killed and 50 unarmed Iraqi civilians died, according to the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city. The Resistance destroyed eight Humvees, five Bradley armored vehicles, and four Abrams tanks.

At the moment he wrote his report, the correspondent wrote that Resistance fighters were continuing their attacks on the fleeing Americans, striking their rear lines in al-Hadithah.

Four CIA officers, six Marines captured amidst fierce fighting in Hit.

Four members of the CIA and six US Marines were taken prisoner by the Iraqi Resistance in Hit in ar-Ramadi Province Tuesday morning according to the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in Hit. The correspondent described fighting in the city as “extremely intense,” noting that the Resistance had established its control of the city on Sunday and remained in control Tuesday.

The correspondent noted that the Resistance does not always try to seize and maintain control of cities and towns regardless of consequences because the Americans then often unleash all their high-tech weapons on the city and inflict tremendous death and destruction on the civilian population. The invaders used that tactic in Samarra’ and before that in Tal‘afar in the north of the country. At times, however, the Resistance does hold a city in order to demonstrate its power to recover cities from the US forces whenever they want to. This has been demonstrated repeatedly in the cities of ar-Ramadi Province, and in al-Latifiyah, al-Yusufiyah, Samarra’, and Ba‘qubah. And it has now again been demonstrated in Hit.

Fighting continued into the night late Monday in Hit.

In a dispatch posted after midnight Tuesday morning, the correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that fierce fighting lasted late into Monday night in the western Iraqi city of Hit, having begun early Monday morning. Two attacks on the “national guard” were mounted. Then in a third four US Humvees attacked an American camp and the US troops opened fire with their automatic weapons, killing members of the “national guard” in the camp. One wounded man reported that Resistance fighters had infiltrated the camp and began firing weapons, another reported that four Humvees entered the camp and opened fire with BKCs. US forces have accused the “national guard” forces that the Americans themselves recruited and trained of working for the Iraqi Resistance in Karbala’ and al-Qa’im and elsewhere in the country. The attacks on the bases Monday left 13 “national guardsmen” dead and four others wounded.

Rocket-propelled grenades took down the other two drone aircraft in the Hadithah area west of Baghdad.

The drone reconnaissance aircraft is about 75cm to 80cm long and has a wingspan of 1 meter. It is powered by two small propellers and has three cameras in its nose cone.

At least Thirteen US troops killed in fighting near al-Qa’im Tuesday.

Extremely fierce fighting raged in the area of ar-Rummanah and in the vicinity of the Phosphate plant starting at 7:15am Tuesday and lasting until 9:15. The clashes resumed then at 2pm afternoon. After dying down for a time, fighting again broke out at 5:20pm and was still under way when the correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam filed his report posted at 1:18am Wednesday morning local time (12:18am Wednesday Mecca time).

In the course of the fighting the Resistance killed 13 US Marines, destroying completely the troop carriers in which they were riding. Five US Marines were also wounded in the attacks. Four Humvees, two armored vehicles were also destroyed with an estimated minimum of 10 soldiers aboard those as well.

The Resistance used powerful bombs of Austrian explosive to destroy the troop carriers. Anti-personnel RPG7 rockets “al-Mihdad” and BKCs were used as well.
