PA Chairman said clinically dead; hospital denies Arafat is dead

A French military hospital spokesman said on Thursday that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's medical state was complex, and that the leader was alive.

"Mr. Arafat is not dead," Christian Estripeau, a spokesman for the Percy
Military Training Hospital in Clamart outside Paris, told a news conference in a brief statement.

"The clinical situation following the first days after (Arafat's) admission has become more complicated. The state of health of the patient requires appropriate treatment which necessitated his transfer during the afternoon of Wednesday, November 3, to a unit suitable for his condition," Estripeau said.

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said Thursday that Arafat died in hospital. "(He) passed away 15 minutes ago," Juncker told reporters on arrival at a European Union summit in Brussels when asked what he knew about Arafat's condition. Juncker later retracted his statement, after speaking to French President Jacques Chirac.

Earlier Thursday, French officials and a French radio station, Radio Monte Carlo, reported the Palestinian leader's death. Radio Monte Carlo reported earlier that Arafat was clinically dead.

The reports were denied by PA officials, including former prime minsiter Ahmed Qureia and senior adviser Mohammed Rashid.

Yasser Arafat was in a coma and in critical condition Thursday in an intensive care ward of a French military hospital, as senior Palestinian Authority officials rushed to Ramallah for emergency meetings of governing bodies formally headed by the stricken leader, Palestinian sources said.

According to reports from Percy Military Hospital, Arafat is in critical condition, and his days are numbered. According to estimates, Arafat is suffering from either a growth in his intestines or stomach, or from blood poisoning.

A source quoted on French television said that Arafat is breathing with the help of a respirator and is not responding to medical treatment that is being administered. The source, a doctor in the hospital, claims that Arafat has no chance of coming out of the coma. The doctor, who asked to remain anonymous, said that in the past three years Arafat's health has been neglected, which led to its deterioration.

In a rare flurry of activity, the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Central Committee of the Fatah movement were urgently summoned to Arafat's Muqata headquarters in the West Bank city. Former Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) also took part in the emergency meeting at the compound.

"The Palestinian leadership is in constant meeting to follow up on the president's health situation," Palestinian cabinet minister Nabil Shaath said in Ramallah, adding that top officials were in touch with Arafat's hospital every half hour to check on his condition.

Arafat was rushed to intensive care late on Wednesday after a sudden deterioration in his condition. French hospital officials had been expected to hold a briefing Thursday morning on the Palestinian leader's condition, but the session was abruptly postponed, without explanation.

Palestinian officials said doctors carrying out tests on the 75-year-old leader since he was airlifted to France last Friday still did not know what was wrong with him, despite ruling out leukaemia.

"New tests have been carried out including an endoscopy [visual internal examination]. Nothing was found out from those tests," a senior aide said earlier on Thursday.

Palestinian officials said Arafat lost consciousness several times Wednesday night, and by Thursday morning was comatose.

Abbas had planned to fly to Paris before dawn Friday to visit the ailing Arafat, but the trip was cancelled after Abbas was told that he would be unable to visit Arafat, Army Radio reported.

Although some Palestinian officials insisted that Arafat's condition had stabilized Thursday morning, Israeli media reported that Arafat's organ systems had begun to fail.

Only his wife Suha, who lives in Paris, and a handful of aides were informed that Arafat had been moved to intensive care late on Wednesday, and no visitors were allowed to see him at the military hospital outside Paris where he was brought for treatment last Friday.

Abbas' planned trip to Paris may have be spurred by hopes that Arafat would officially appoint him as a successor, a move the PA chairman has so far avoided. Although Arafat has never named a deputy or heir, Abbas - who is secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization's executive committee - is second to Arafat in the PLO's hierarchy, making him a logical candidate for the job.

Palestinian officials said doctors still don't know the cause of Arafat's illness, but it is apparently viral, making it difficult to treat with medicine. French doctors treating him had earlier ruled out leukemia.

Only Suha Arafat and the Palestinian leader's cousin, Palestinian UN representative Nasser al-Kidwa, are allowed to visit the stricken Arafat.

Arafat first became ill during the Ramadan fast when his doctors said he was suffering from flu. Israel allowed him to be taken from his Muqata headquarters after his condition worsened.

Earlier Wednesday, Shahid said Arafat felt well enough to ask about the U.S. presidential election, and an aide later issued a statement in Arafat's name congratulating George W. Bush on his reelection. At the time, Shahid also said Arafat's health was improving.
