Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 26 November 2004
By: Muhammad Abu Nasr on: 27.11.2004 [09:24 ]

Friday, 26 November 2004.

Al-Fallujah.

Friday night barrage pounds US siege troops around al-Fallujah.

In a dispatch posted at 10pm Friday night Mecca time, a Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that al-Fallujah Iraqi Resistance forces had showered more than 40 Katyusha, Tariq, and Grad rockets on US troop concentrations encircling the defiant city.

The correspondent reported that the bombardment particularly targeted the US concentrations around al-Fallujah to the west and south of the city, as well as those around the railroad. None of the US forces that had withdrawn to the west of the city were involved in the bombardment.

The Resistance bombardment was still going on when the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent posted his story at 8:25pm Friday night.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Resistance sources inside al-Fallujah and outside the city report that US losses have reached 500 destroyed vehicles - including heavy and medium weight vehicles as well as light ones. These include various types of armored vehicles, Humvees, and armored personnel carriers (APCs).

Fourth major Resistance breakthrough: Resistance seizes back al-Fallujah’s Old City.

In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Friday night Mecca time the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that al-Fallujah Resistance fighters at midday Friday broke through US lines into the Old City of central al-Fallujah where they seized control.

The correspondent wrote that fierce fighting erupted after the Resistance broke through at about 1pm Friday, and continued violently until about 4pm. US forces unleashed mortar rounds on the Resistance and US aircraft fired rockets and container bombs loaded with cluster bombs.

Afterwards calm settled in over the city and remained until at least 8:10pm when the correspondent compiled his report. Friday’s breakthrough was the fourth major http://www.islammemo.cc/news/one_news.asp?IDNews=50559successful Resistance breakthrough of US lines scored in and around the city during the present siege of al-Fallujah. About 10 days ago there was a breakthrough in the east of the city, then there was a breakthrough into the al-Wahdah neighborhood about 5 days ago, and about three days ago Resistance forces outside the city to the west in al-Azraqiyah broke through US lines and into the al-Jawlan neighborhood. Friday’s breakthrough into the Old City was, however, the first breakthrough into this part of the city. It is in the Old City that the large cathedral mosque is located.

Resistance forces opened their assault with a bombardment using 60mm mortars targeting the US command posts on the old and new bridges. This forced the Americans to withdraw and at the same time, they pulled back from a broader area in the western part of the city (see earlier story below).

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent noted three particular things about Friday’s successful breakthrough into the Old City. First, there was no direct ground combat between Resistance fighters and the US invaders in the course of the attack, meaning that the Resistance has indeed seized control of the area. Second, the fact that the US relied on airstrikes and mortar bombardments alone to defend the Old City means that they had no ground forces inside that part of the city. Third, the Resistance broke through into the Old City, an area at the heart of al-Fallujah, meeting no ground resistance from the American occupation forces, and firing broke out only after they had extended their control throughout the neighborhood.

First US withdrawals from al-Fallujah reported.

In a dispatch posted at 9pm Mecca time, Friday night, a Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that US forces outside al-Fallujah on Friday were subjected to Resistance bombardment with Grad and Tariq rockets. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the area reported that after receiving the pounding, US troops pulled their units from the western sector of their ring surrounding the city back in the direction of the US base at al-Habbaniyah.

Friday afternoon, a large number of armored vehicles were also withdrawn towards al-Habbahiyah without engaging the Resistance.

This was the first US retreat from any of the sectors of the ring around al-Fallujah since the siege began some weeks ago. US forces also withdrew the check points that they had set up to the west of the city on the old bridge and the new bridge. Also withdrawn was one of the US command points to the north of the city, but this was after it came under Iraqi Resistance bombardment.

These developments show a weakening of the US forces surrounding al-Fallujah, a kind of shocked reaction to their failure to dislodge the Resistance. In fact in the last three days, the Resistance has managed to regain its old strength and widen the areas of the city under their control so that now 65 percent of al-Fallujah is controlled by the Resistance.

The weakness of US forces became apparent in recent days when Resistnace fighters outside the city were able to break through US lines on three occasions - once by swimming the river and twice through what was supposedly the strongly fortified northwestern part of the city.

Mafkarat al-Islam reports that the Resistance has managed to cut all US supply lines on all land routes to the US attackers around al-Fallujah. After that the US was faced with a well-planned war of attrition, forcing the Americans into a long-term close confrontation with the Resistance, exposing them to great danger, as occurred in the first siege of the city in April. For nearly one week, no major fighting has broken out except under cover of darkness, usually dissipating after sunrise. Even US aerial attacks on the city have grown less intense than they were at the start of the American offensive.

US forces also experienced a major set-back when they were struck in the al-Bu ‘Irrin gardens area by unconventional rockets fired by the Resistance. These resulted in serious US losses, as evidenced by the fact that four giant Chinook helicopters were required to ferry the dead and wounded away.

Another development has been the withdrawal of US snipers from the streets overlooking the Euphrates River, whereby the city became exposed from the west.

This is not the first time Mafkarat al-Islam has reported US withdrawals. Mafkarat al-Islam reported the first US withdrawal from al-Fallujah during the first siege of the city in April, producing disbelief in some and even resulting in condemnation from some quarters, since no other media reported any American withdrawals, but simply echoed official US claims of nonstop “victory” and “advance.” Days following demonstrated that the reports in Mafkarat al-Islam were correct, however, and it was not long before American forces were engaged in talks with representatives of al-Fallujah with the aim of securing their departure from the city.

Al-Fallujah calm after fierce fighting early on Friday.

Fierce fighting broke out early Friday on several axes around al-Fallujah. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent within the city reported that the fighting erupted on the southern axis in the area of the ash-Shuhada’ neighborhood, on the southeastern axis in the industrial zone, and also on the southwestern axis at the al-Jubayl neighborhood.

Less intense fighting took place in the al-Jawlan neighborhood, while heavy broke out in the al-‘Askari neighborhood to the east, and less intense fighting in the al-Wahdah neighborhood.

For the first time there was fighting in the ad-Dubbat and ash-Shurtah neighborhoods as well. This fact means that the Resistance is able to carry out operations, breaking into areas in the north of the city where there is a presence of US invader troops - a presence that is not, however, consolidated. Such Resistance attacks serve to weaken the US forces and their puppet “national guard” stooges.

Fighting raged in the above-mentioned areas of al-Fallujah for nearly three hours on Friday, and then came to a halt and calm set in over the city which continued at least until 5:30pm local time. US aircraft carried out no strikes in the city and Resistance gunfire also fell silent.

The fighting that broke out in the south of al-Fallujah Friday was not a response to US firing but took place in the course of Resistance attacks on the US forces. This reflects the fact that American troops have become somewhat worn out and listless as a result of their failure to inflict defeat on the city’s defiant Resistance forces, despite their having employed savage and internationally banned weapons in their attack on al-Fallujah.

US now adopts less arrogant tone but Resistance rebuffs their appeals.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reports from al-Fallujah that US forces have changed their tone when addressing the people of the city through loudspeakers and interpreters as they do from time to time. The correspondent noted in a dispatch posted at 8:25pm Friday night Mecca time, that whereas in recent days, the American invaders referred to the Resistance in al-Fallujah as “criminals” and “terrorists,” in recent broadcasts the Americans have called them “fighters.”

According to the correspondent, the Americans have broadcast an offer to the Resistance, calling for them to lay down their weapons in return for an American pledge to withdraw from all directions around al-Fallujah. This amounts to an American climb-down from its earlier attempt - which has failed - simply to seize control of the city by means of brute, high-tech force.

The correspondent reported that the American side broadcast this appeal in messages called out late Thursday evening. Resistance forces responded with a hail of gunfire and a barrage of C5K rockets at the car being used to broadcast the call.

Resistance mounts its most powerful rocket barrage in five days on US forces.

Starting early Friday morning, Iraqi Resistance forces in al-Fallujah bombarded US troops in the area. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the attack began at 7am Baghdad time, and that the targets were US troop concentrations near the railroad near the northwest of the al-Jawlan neighborhood, north of the al-‘Askari neighborhood, east of the al-‘Askari neighborhood, and to the south of the city.

The correspondent reported that the Resistance fired more than 60 Grad and Tariq rockets producing fierce explosions. This was the strongest Resistance barrage on US forces for five days, he wrote.
