The Iraqi Resistance organization Jama‘at at-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad al-‘Iraqi announced on Thursday that it had shot down a Polish aggressor helicopter in the al-Imam neighborhood of Karbala’ at about 9:45am on Wednesday, killing seven Polish soldiers who were aboard it. The organization said it had used a Strela rocket to bring down the aircraft. Eyewitnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that after their helicopter was hit, the Polish invader troops jumped out, falling into a garden in the al-Imam neighborhood where at-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad fighters hunted them down and killed them with spears and other silent weapons. The official Polish story was that the helicopter crashed as a result of a “malfunction in its motor.”

Elsewhere in Iraq. . .

The American New York Times newspaper reported on Thursday that medical experts say that one in six American troops in Iraq are now suffering from such serious mental problems as major depression, serious anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. US specialists say that that proportion could well rise to one in three, and some experts predict that “the number eventually requiring mental health treatment could exceed 100,000.” Stephen L. Robinson, a 20-year US army veteran said that large numbers will be needing psychiatric help for the next 35 years. Robinson, The New York Times reported, wrote a report in September on the psychological toll of the war for the Center for American Progress,” an organization that the paper described as “a Washington research group.”

The American newspaper reported that according to psychiatrists, the kind of fighting urban warfare that the US troops encountered in al-Fallujah with its “spooky urban settings with unlimited hiding places; the impossibility of telling Iraqi friend from Iraqi foe; the knowledge that every stretch of road may conceal an explosive device - is tailored to produce the adrenaline-gone-haywire reactions that leave lasting emotional scars.”

The New York Times wrote that, “in no recent conflict have so many soldiers faced such uncertainty about how long they will be deployed. Veterans say the repeated extensions of duty in Iraq are emotionally battering, even for the most stoical of warriors.”

The American newspaper quoted Paul Rieckhoff, who served as a US platoon leader with the Florida Army National Guard for 10 months, and who described combat in Iraq, saying: “In the urban terrain, the enemy is everywhere, across the street, in that window, up that alley. It’s a fishbowl. You never feel safe. You never relax.”
