The puppet guard told the correspondent that more than 15 troops had been killed in the Resistance attack. This was confirmed by an Iraqi translator serving the US troops in the prison.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent had entered Abu Ghurayb prison and met prisoners who had been released Saturday. One of the released men confirmed as well that the prison is under consistent rocket barrages, at the rate of three or four attacks each week. At 6am Saturday a large force of US troops ミ estimated at more than 60 vehicles ミ stormed the city of al-Mahmudiyah. The US troops failed to find any Resistance presence to speak of, and they found no weapons either after having raided houses in the city. They therefore arrested no one during their raids, contrary to American claims that they had arrested a number of Islamic Army or at-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad fighters in the city.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the US force that entered from the four compass points divided up within the city into a number of areas where they attempted to provoke the local people by storming into houses randomly and ransacking people’s belongings. Ash-Shamari’s brother, who was with the deceased at the time, was also seriously wounded in the attack and taken to hospital. The deceased had occupied that post for several months after the previous chairman Hisham ‘Ata Shahhadhah resigned after repeated attempts on his life.

Local officials speculated that the official might have been specially targeted because he had requested US-installed puppet “prime minister” Iyyad ‘Allawai to launch a large-scale attack on Ba‘qubah to “cleanse it of terrorists” as he put it, as had been done in al-Fallujah.
