Wednesday, 5 January 2005.

Al-Fallujah ミ ar-Ramadi ミ al-Anbar Province.

Resistance pounds US troops in al-Fallujah with rockets.

Wednesday was a hard day for US troops in the residential area of northern al-Fallujah. Resistance forces bombarded the American invaders with 16 Tariq and Grad rockets from time to time throughout the day. The bombardment began at 12:10pm Wednesday with a powerful Grad rocket. The at 6pm a Tariq blasted into the American occupied area. Then at about 6:45pm another Grad rocket hit the US position.

The rest of the Grad and Tariq rockets were fired in the period between 10:05pm and 11:30pm Wednesday.

Witnesses outside al-Fallujah observed a US column made up of 56 American vehicles, most of them Humvees, heading towards al-Fallujah. The column went into the US base in the agricultural area northeast of the city, joining up with other US troops already there.

Resistance hits US base east of ar-Ramadi with mortar bombardment.

Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded the US base located east of ar-Ramadi on Wednesday with fifteen 82mm mortar rounds. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in ar-Ramadi reported witnesses as saying that the mortar shells landed inside the US camp at 2pm local time, sending clouds of thick smoke rising into the sky for two hours.

US forces responded to the bombardment by shooting at where they thought the mortar shells were fired. The US counter barrage lasted about half an hour. But all the American shells landed in the Euphrates. The Resistance attackers had been on the banks of the river but withdrew after finishing their attack on the base which is a mere 4km from the river.

US troops throw bodies in Euphrates River, prompting fatwa against eating local fish.

A number of religious scholars in western Iraq’s al-Anbar Province issued a religious legal opinion fatwa on Wednesday saying that it is forbidden to catch fish in the parts of the Euphrates river that pass through al-Fallujah, ar-Ramadi, al-Hit, and al-Qa’im, because there have been reports that the Americans dispose of the bodies of their mercenaries by throwing them into the river. Some of the fish then feed upon the bodies, and in fact, the statement says, there has been an increase in the number of fish lately, indicating that they are indeed feeding off the human carrion.

The fatwa was distributed around mosques throughout al-Anbar Province and is part of a health and hygiene campaign aimed at alerting the populace to the health risks involved in eating such meat.

A number of fishermen in ar-Ramadi told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that the US military threw more than 40 bodies on one day into the Euphrates River in the ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah area, tossing them out of a helicopter. This was not the first time that this took place. The fishermen expressed their anger over such actions by the US forces, since it amounts to an attack on their source of livelihood and income for their families.

Al-Qa’im.

Resistance pummels American Base 22 near al-Qa’im with heavy mortar barrage.

Iraqi Resistance forces pounded the US Base 22 near the city of al-Qa’im on the Syrian border with thirty-two 120mm mortar rounds at 11am local time Wednesday morning. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the barrage set numerous massive fires inside the base that were still burning when he filed his report (posted at 4:05pm Mecca time). Large numbers of American helicopters arrived over the base and were still evacuating dead and wounded from Base 22 to the base that the Americans have called al-Asad when he filed his report. (The Iraqi al-Qadisiyah base near the Syrian border was renamed by the American invaders “al-Asad.”)

In a communiqu distributed in local mosques immediately after the attack, the Resistance group Salafi Legions of the True Promise Jahafil al-Wa‘d al-Haqq as-Salafiyah took responsibility for the attack. The communiqu, entitled “Communiqu No. 9” announced that the bombardment targeted the US barracks inside the camp, and that their shells scored direct hits according to reports of their informants inside the facility. The communiqu made no mention of the number of US casualties, but did say that the barracks were home to more than 300 US troops, distributed in six steel structures, all of which were destroyed at breakfast time.

The communiqu threatened the US-appointed “prime minister” of Iraq Iyyad ‘Allawi, whom they called “the Sharon of Iraq” and warned US forces and the Kurdish chauvinist militia the Peshmergah against trying to attack Mosul or even thinking about it.

The communiqu compared the puppet regime’s intended assault on the city with the wars of the Crusaders against Islam, and said that Mosul would be the second graveyard for the Americans after al-Fallujah, if ‘Allawi or the Americans dared to attack.

The communiqu threatened to strike US bases, puppet “ministries,” and oil pipelines, electric power stations, and “stooge” political party headquarters the moment an offensive is launched.

The statement warned that the battle of Mosul would be the extension of the Battle of al-Fallujah, and reminded the enemy of the recent Battle of Tal‘afar and how the people of the city repulsed the aggression and how the greatest army in the world was humbled by a town with a small population and limited area, that nevertheless even the Americans could not break into.

As-Samawah.

Having renounced armed Resistance, Muqtada as-Sadr’s group opposes occupation with opinion polls.

A group led by Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr is conducting a public poll in as-Samawah to find out how people evaluate the activities of the Japanese invader troops in the southeastern Iraq city, a group member said Tuesday, according to a report in The Japan Times.

The group’s office in as-Samawah started the survey Saturday and plans to reveal the results in its weekly publication Friday, according to a publicity officer. It is unknown how many residents will be surveyed.

The poll is aimed at proving that there are many people in as-Samawah who support the group’s assertion that the Japanese troops constitute an occupation force in Iraq and its demand that the troops withdraw immediately, the publicity officer said.
The move is seen as part of efforts by the as-Sadr group to promote “nonviolent opposition” to the Japanese invader presence.

The survey asks respondents to answer yes or no to four questions - whether they are satisfied with the activities of the Japanese aggressor contingent in as-Samawah, are in favor of the Japanese aggressor contingent’s deployment, see the results of the Japanese aggressor contingent’s activities in as-Samawah, and are generally in favor of occupation troops deployed to as-Samawah.

Badr Brigades storm mosques, expel Sunnis. 20,000 Sunni families driven out of southern cities by sectarian Shi‘i gunmen collaborating with the US occupation.

Pro-American Shi‘i sectarian leaders in Iraq took more steps on Wednesday to aggravate sectarian tension in the country. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in southern Iraq reported that gunmen of the collaborationist Badr Brigades ミ the armed wing of the Shi‘i chauvinist and collaborationist organization known as the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) stormed the Mosque of Islamic Unity in an-Najaf and the Mosque of the Ten who were Promised Paradise in an-Nasiriyah and expelled all the Sunni worshippers and religious scholars from those places of Islamic worship.

The correspondent noted that the simultaneous attacks, which were clearly part of a coordinated plan, were carried out despite the fact that Sunni worshippers never once entered the specifically Shi‘i, Husayniyah, place of worship, nor has the predominantly Sunni Resistance ever struck or expelled any Iraqi for being a Shi‘i.

The Badr Brigade gunmen who expelled Sunni worshippers from the mosques in an-Najaf and an-Nasiriyah ordered the Sunnis out, and advised them to leave those cities as well, calling them “Wahhabis” and falsely accusing them of opposing the family of the Prophet Muhammad.

Mafkarat al-Islam reports that more than 20,000 Sunni families have already been driven out of the southern Iraqi cities of an-Najaf, al-Basrah, al-Kut, Karbala’, and an-Nasiriyah by threats from the Badr Brigades and similar groups. The Sunnis were told that if they did not leave their homes in those cities, the gunmen would tell the Americans that they were “terrorists,” or, in some cases, that the Badr Brigades themselves would come and kill them.
