Iraqi Resistance forces shot down a US Apache helicopter at 6pm local time Wednesday over the administrative boundary marking the border of the an-Nazal neighborhood in al-Fallujah. The correspondent wrote that the aircraft had been flying at low altitude over an-Nazal, checking to make sure that US forces remained in control of that neighborhood, which they over ran several days ago. But the helicopter itself suddenly took a direct hit by a Strela rocket, fired from an area along the border of the neighborhood.

Local witnesses reported that the Americans left the wrecked helicopter, not venturing to go into the area to recover the bodies or the wreckage. They had not yet approached the crash scene when the correspondent filed his report, posted at 7:20pm Mecca time Wednesday night.

The Japanese troops with their escorts drove through the streets of as-Samawah for an hour and then beat a hasty retreat to their camp at 10am. The exercise might normally be called a “show of force,” but under the circumstances appeared to be an admission of weakness.

Perhaps the main reason why the Japanese invaders now felt emboldened enough to venture out of their camp even for a short period was the fact that the Japanese had reached an agreement with local tribal leaders to provide additional protection. According to local puppet police sources, the Japanese secured the tribes’ agreement to the deal by promising jobs to the local unemployed and by pledging to build various projects in the city.
