Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Tuesday, 15 February 2005. Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The Free Arab Voice.
Tuesday, 15 February 2005.

Al-Hadithah.

Fighting erupts in al-Hadithah Tuesday morning.

Fierce fighting erupted between an estimated 40 Iraqi Resistance fighters and US occupation troops in al-Hadithah, west of Baghdad, at 10am Tuesday morning local time, when US troops tried to storm into the city. Witnesses told the local correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam that the fighting raged near the wooden al-Haqlaniyah Bridge and that Resistance fighters used their traditional weapons, such as machine guns, and shoulder fired rocket launchers. US tanks were heavily involved in the fighting.

The combat lasted 40 minutes and left five US Humvees destroyed and more than 20 American troops dead, the correspondent reported. That death toll was confirmed by the head of the Hadithah municipality office, who added that the fighting also destroyed the only bridge in the city linking the two banks of the Euphrates. Mosques in the city announced the martyrdom of four Resistance fighters in the battle.

Al-Fallujah.

Large-scale US withdrawal from al-Fallujah area reported.

Dozens of US vehicles loaded with American troops were observed on Tuesday morning leaving al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad, heading for the Iraqi capital. In a dispatch posted at 4:25pm Mecca time Tuesday afternoon, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported from International Highway 1, said that he had witnessed more than 90 US vehicles including tanks, and armored vehicles, being transported on giant transporters.

The correspondent said that the large-scale exodus of US forces from the environs of al-Fallujah lent some credence to reports in the city that the Iraqi Resistance had struck the US camp in the agricultural area northeast of the city at 2am on Sunday. A soldier in the puppet “Iraqi rapid deployment force” told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance had fired rockets loaded with deadly sarin gas into the US base.

The source claimed that more than 225 American troops choked to death in the attack. Reports coming from al-Fallujah and sources in the Iraqi puppet army said that fires burned in the US camp after the rocket barrage for a full 24 hours, causing the closing of the highway some three kilometers from the city of al-Fallujah. The highway still remained closed, the correspondent wrote, as he filed his report (posted at 4:25pm Mecca time Tuesday afternoon). The old road that runs from Baghdad to Abu Ghurayb to al-Fallujah is still open as far as al-Karmah ミ that is before the US base ミ but is closed from there on, forcing travelers from Baghdad to al-Fallujah to detour to al-Karmah, northeast of al-Fallujah and then make their way from there to the city by alternate routes.

Local residents of al-Fallujah said that the night of the barrage on the US base was like one the first night of the US attack on their city. All the US troops withdrew to streets and lanes inside the city. The chief of staff of the US military also paid a visit to the camp, the local people said, under a veil of secrecy. Even the governor of al-Fallujah, Ra‘d al-Barishah was forbidden entrance to the US base on the day the American official visited.

The Sunday night barrage was the heaviest attack on US forces in al-Fallujah since Resistance fighters evacuated the city on 23 January 2005. It remains unclear whether the evacuation of US forces from al-Fallujah is to be a temporary measure for regrouping, or whether it is a permanent reduction in forces.

Local residents believed that the Sunday night Resistance attack ミ for which no group has claimed responsibility ミ was carried out by the First Army of Muhammad Group which had promised before the US attack began in November to use weapons that would “surprise the occupation.”

The First Army of Muhammad announced some time back that it had developed a locally made rocket that it called “al-Faruq 1”. Not long after, the group announced that it had produced a rocket called “al-Qahir al-Jabbar” which has subsequently been used to strike more than 40 US bases, Mafkarat al-Islam reported.

Hit.

Resistance bombards US base near Hit; 11 Americans reported killed.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired six Grad rockets into the US barracks near the train station west of Hit at 7:30am Tuesday morning. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that more than 11 US troops were killed in the bombardment that also destroyed US observations towers and communication towers.

The correspondent reported that a translator working inside the base, who did not want to give his name, said that the bombardment targeted the American troops’ sleeping quarters and killed 11 of the men while wounding another 18 who were in a neighboring room. Five of those wounded are in very serious condition, the man reported.

Baghdad.

Resistance bomb in ad-Durah leaves three US troops dead.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded next to a US military column in the neighborhood of al-Mahdiyah in the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah at 7am Tuesday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported, killing three American troops and wounding four more.

The correspondent reported that a source in the puppet so-called “Iraqi national guard” said that a bomb had been planted by the side of the road that exploded and virtually completely destroyed a US tank, leaving three Americans dead and four others injured. The correspondent saw US vehicles surrounding the scene of the attack. The Americans prevented anyone approaching the area as they used cranes to haul away the wrecked hulk of the tank.

Islamic Army in Iraq fires 12 heavy mortar rounds into US ar-Ridwaniyah base.

The Iraqi Resistance organization The Islamic Army in Iraq announced its responsibility for a rocket attack on the US occupation base in ar-Ridwaniyah, west of Baghdad. In a video aired on al-Jazeera satellite TV the organization, one of the more prominent ones in the Iraqi Resistance, announced that it fired 12 heavy mortar rounds at the US headquarters in the ar-Ridwaniyah palace, Mafkarat al-Islam reported.

The video showed a number of Islamic Army fighters preparing the rounds and then firing them at the base. The tape said that all members of the attack unit returned to their own base safely after the attack. There was no information on the extent of US casualties as a result of the bombardment.

Salman Bak.

Resistance bomb kills Zionists stealing archaeological artifacts.

Four foreigners and an Iraqi translator working with them were killed when an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded in the Salman Bak area, 20km southwest of Baghdad on Tuesday. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in Salman Bak said that the blast targeted a “civilian” car carrying the four foreigners and the translator as well as the driver. The blast occurred near the tomb of the venerated Companion of the Prophet Muhammad, Salman al-Farsi.

The correspondent reported that the Resistance bomb went off under the car, a white armored GMC, at 9am local time Tuesday morning, destroying the car and killing all aboard. Local witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the car had been on its way to the al-Mada’in archaeological area. One resident there said that every week on average there are four to five groups of foreigners who come to the archaeological area to hunt for artifacts. Some of the groups, he said, come with the intention of stealing the relics in the full knowledge of the puppet police and the American army. “We told them what they were doing,” the local man said, “but they showed no particular interest.”

For its part, one of the Resistance organizations in Iraq announced its responsibility for the attack in a communiqu distributed in Salman Bak. The communiqu said that the foreigners in the car were Zionists. The communiqu said that the brothers in the Resistance group had been observing their movements for a long time and they had already stolen numerous Iraqi archaeological artifacts.

Mafkarat al-Islam recalled that in June of 2004 the Iraqi Resistance executed seven foreign Jews who had snuck into the archaeological city of Babil and held some of their religious rites there on the banks of the Euphrates. At the time the Resistance published a number of documents that were in the possession of the Jews, some of which read, “now, Oh Lord, I have fulfilled Your promise to your chosen people ‘from the Nile to the Euphrates’.” At that time the US forces declared that bodies had been found on the banks of the Euphrates in Babil, and a number of Shi‘i clerics and secular political leaders denounced the killing of the foreigners, saying that they were just “civilian tourists.”

The attack on Tuesday brings to four the number of Resistance attacks on foreigners stealing Iraqi archaeological artifacts. Three of those were Jewish groups.

Meanwhile the Resistance group The Brigades of Hayzun al-Jihadiyah threatened to kill any other person who takes it into his head to rob the history of this country, whether that be the Islamic or non-Islamic. The group denounced the US-installed Iraqi puppet government saying that it facilitated the plunder of Iraq.

Al-Yusufiyah.

Resistance car bomb targets US column near al-Yusufiyah.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by a US military column in the ad-Dulaym area west of al-Yusufiyah, south of Baghdad at 6:20am Tuesday morning. Eyewitnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the blast destroyed one US troop transport vehicle and disabled two Humvees, killing and wounding 13 Americans.

At the time the correspondent filed his report, posted at 12:10pm Mecca time, US forces were still encircling the scene of the attack. During the first hour after the attack, the Americans called in helicopters to evacuate the dead and wounded.

Ba‘qubah ミ Diyala Province.

Resistance downs US Cobra helicopter near al-Khalis.

Iraqi Resistance forces opened ground fire on a US Cobra helicopter in the al-Khalis area south of Ba‘qubah, bringing it down on Tuesday morning, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in Diyala Province reported. He said that the helicopter had been flying at a low altitiude over one of he villages in the area of al-Khalis whose population is largely of Salafi orientation, when it was shot down in flames at exactly 10am Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told the correspondent that the helicopter crewmen were killed instantly and that American forces headed towards the area where the helicopter went down. Another US helicopter fired at the source of the gunfire, martyring one of the Resistance fighters.

The rocket started massive fires that were still burning when the correspondent submitted his report, posted at 10:25am Mecca time. At that moment, no fire fighters had arrived on the scene.

US admits one soldier killed in bomb attack near Ba‘qubah.

The US occupation forces announced on Tuesday that one American soldier had been killed and three others wounded in an explosion in northern Iraq. The US military statement said the blast resulted from a bomb planted by the Iraqi Resistance near Ba‘qubah, 65km north of Baghdad. Reuters reported that the US report said that the American troops were on patrol when the bomb exploded.

Mosul.

Resistance rocket attack destroys puppet governor’s office in Mosul.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired rockets into the building housing the offices of the governorate of Ninwa Province in Mosul at 1:30pm Monday. The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a captain in the puppet police said that six rockets hit the building and the office of the puppet governor of Mosul, Durayd Kashmulah. The attack killed four of the governor’s aides and completely destroyed the governor’s office.

Kirkuk.

Ethnic violence expected to take pressure off US troops in Kirkuk after American-backed vote rigging promotes sectarian strife.

American forces in the city of Kirkuk are preparing for ethnic violence after their rigging of the 30 January “elections” gave a disproportionate “victory” to Kurdish chauvinist forces intent on splitting the city away from Iraq. The Turkish Daily News reported on Tuesday that the city’s 850,000 population is split roughly three ways between Arabs, Turkmen, and Kurds, with Assyrian Christians forming a minority of about 3 percent.

Yet despite that ethnic makeup, the Kurdish chauvinist parties won some 59 percent of the vote in an election that Arabs and Turkmen say was rigged with the help of the US occupation forces.

The paper noted that before the election there had been numerous attacks on US occupation troops in the city. Now the Americans are getting ready to watch as the different ethnic groups attack each other. The Turkish newspaper quoted US occupation Captain Mitch Smith, a company commander in the city as saying, “I think there’ll be some ethnic violence here, I really do.”

The Turkish Daily News reported that Kurdish groups threatened to boycott the election unless Kurds from outside the city, who claim to be refugees, were allowed to vote in Kirkuk. The US-installed “election commission” agreed, the paper reported, infuriating Arab and Turkmen residents.

“There was some faking, some fixing of votes on election day and everyone knows it,” said Muhsin Bizi Jasim, a Shi‘i community leader from one of Kirkuk’s poor Arab neighborhoods in the south of the city, the paper reported.

“Some of the people who voted on election day were not from Kirkuk,” he told Reuters in response to the results. “We were told that the main roads from the north would be blocked to stop this happening but they weren’t and the Kurds managed to find a way through.”

Other Kirkuk Arabs agreed. “The results are as expected and are rejected at the same time,” said Ra’d Khalil. "The parties manipulated the vote and the Electoral Commission helped them.”

On 25 January the United Arab Front party in Kirkuk withdrew from the sham election to protest the decision of the “election commission” Shaykh Wasfi al-‘Asi told the London-based al-Quds al-‘Arabi newspaper that the commission was allowing more than 70,000 Kurds who were not residents of Kirkuk to take part in the sham “elections.” (See Iraqi Resistance Report, “Arab political party in Kirkuk pulls out of election farce,” Tuesday, 25 January 2005.)

The paper noted that when Kurds came out to celebrate their “election victory” the US forces, after an initial show of trying to dampen the divisive demonstrations, allowed the Kurds to go ahead.
