Thursday, 10 March 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.

Al-Haditha.

At least 28 American troops killed when Resistance shoots down US Chinook helicopter north of al-Hadithah early Thursday.

Iraqi Resistance forces shot down a US Chinook helicopter on the at-Tulayhiyah Peninsula north of al-Hadithah in western Iraq’s al-Anbar Province at 4am Thursday morning.

Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance fired a SAM-7 anti-aircraft rocket that struck the US helicopter in the sky over the peninsula - on which is a village of about 10,000 people bounded on three sides by the water of the Euphrates River. The downing of the huge aircraft left more than 28 American troops aboard it dead. The Americans were on their way to the ‘Ayn al-Asad airbase in al-Hadithah.

The correspondent, who arrived at the crash site Thursday morning, reported that a number of local fishermen and villagers said that the Resistance had set up rocket batteries in date palm groves on Wednesday evening. There they apparently lay in wait for the helicopter. The local fisherman said, “when we came out at 2am this morning to lay our nets in the Euphrates we found they were still in the groves. They hadn’t slept, and the night was rainy and cold. But we woke up at 4am to the sound of the firing of rockets and then a huge explosion. We ran out or our houses right after that to see the helicopter, with fire burning all over it, plunging to the ground.

The witnesses, of whom there were more than 13, swore to the correspondent that they personally saw American soldiers falling out of the burning helicopter while it was still in the air. As to the number of American casualties, a member of the puppet “Iraqi national guard” told the correspondent Thursday morning that the US searchers had so far found 28 American bodies, including those of a number of female soldiers.

At the time the correspondent’s report - posted at 10:50am Mecca time Thursday morning - was being compiled, US troops had encircled the village which they only rarely go into since it is quite far from the center of al-Hadithah and because the natural geography of the area is complicated, particularly since the collapse of the only bridge there several months ago, cutting off the village from nearby towns.

The correspondent noted that the Iraqi Resistance announced its responsibility for the operation on Thursday in a communiqu posted on doors of mosques in the city of al-Hadithah.

Al-Fallujah.

Nine US troops killed in powerful bombing in al-Fallujah Thursday morning.

Iraqi Resistance fighters detonated a high-explosive bomb by a US Zil troop transport vehicle in al-Fallujah at 8am Thursday morning totally destroying it. The blast was so powerful that it sent parts of the vehicle flying through the air. Nine US troops were killed in the attack, Mafkarat al-Islam reported.

The correspondent, who was at the scene of the attack when he submitted his report, said that the Americans were in a state of shock after the powerful bombing. The blast had thrown some of the American troops as far as nearly 10 meters from the vehicle, and most of the bodies of the troops were blown apart, scattering body parts all over the scene.

US forces came in and were encircling the area at the time the correspondent filed his report - posted at 11:52am Mecca time Thursday morning. The US troops were also storming into nearby houses and carrying out searches having imposed a curfew on the neighborhood that was still in force when the report was filed.

The correspondent noted that the Resistance was able to carry out such a stunning attack despite the fact that al-Fallujah is occupied by some 3,000 US troops and 1,500 puppet soldiers, despite the fact that the city is full of giant armored vehicles and the skies above are patrolled and kept under surveillance by 20 spy and photographic aircraft every day.

Ar-Ramadi.

Iraqi Resistance bomb explodes in ar-Ramadi killing four US troops.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a column of four US Humvees on 20 Street in ar-Ramadi, 110km west of Baghdad at 11am Thursday. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city reported that the blast destroyed one Humvee and disabled a second and killed four US troops and wounded two more. Shopkeepers on the street who witnessed the event reported that Resistance fighters planted the bomb.

Baghdad.

Resistance bomb kills two US troops in ad Durah.

In a dispatch posted at 3:59pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the Third al-Mahdiyah neighborhood in the middle of the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah. A member in the puppet police posted near the scene reported that the roadside bomb exploded by a US column, disabling one Humvee and killing two American troops. Two other soldiers were seriously wounded in the blast, he said.

At the time of reporting, US forces had sealed off the scene of the attack and were hauling away the wrecked vehicle and evacuating the casualties.

Resistance assassinates puppet police commander in Baghdad.

Puppet police sources reported early Thursday that Iraqi Resistance fighters wearing puppet police uniforms killed the commander of the puppet police station in the heart of Baghdad.

Sources said that the Resistance fighters set up a check point and stopped the car carrying the puppet police officer as he was on his way to work in the as-Salihiyah puppet police station. The Resistance fighters in puppet police disguise asked the officer his name and then shot him dead. Also killed were two puppet policemen who were with their commander in the car.

US media report Kurdish, Shi‘i collaborator leaders reach agreement paving the way to formation of new puppet regime.

The American Associated press reported late Thursday that representatives of the collaborator parties that won the sham “election” farce staged at the end of January by the US occupation have agreed on polices that will pave the way to the formation of a new puppet regime to replace that of Iyyan ‘Allawi.

Sources with the Shi‘i collaborationists and Kurdish collaborationists announced that an agreement had been reached on how they will divide responsibilities in the next US run theatrical “government” which is to be announced after a meeting of the puppet “national assembly” next week.

The officials noted that the agreement contained key demand by the Kurdish chauvinists, namely that serious discussions would begin concerning the importation of about 100,000 ethnic Kurds into the northern oil-rich city of Kikuk. The agreement by the two sides also says that new maps would be drawn up that show Kirkuk as a part of the Kurdish area.

Ever since the US invasion in spring 2003, there have been persistent reports of a strong Zionist presence among the Kurdish chauvinists in the north of occupied Iraq, as they make use of the Kurdish minority to press ahead with efforts to secure control of the northern Iraqi oil fields. The latest agreement that appears to fulfill one of the key demands of the Kurdish chauvinist parties is likely to be received enthusiastically in Zionist circles as well.

Diyala Province.

Salman Bak.

Resistance bomb kills five US troops in Salman Bak Thursday morning. Americans later ransack tomb of Salman al-Farsi, the Companion of the Prophet.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a column of several US armored vehicles in Salman Bak, south of Baghdad at 10:15am Thursday. The blast destroyed one Bradley armored vehicle and killed five US troops. Three more troops were wounded in the blast.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local witnesses as saying that the bomb was planted on the side of the road leading to the tomb of the Prophet’s Companion Salman al-Farsi. The Americans were on a daily routine patrol in the area.

After the attack, US and Iraqi puppet troops surrounded the area. They stormed into the mosque known as the Salman al-Farsi Mosque and the grave of the Companion, located 100 meters from the mosque, searching it and totally ransacking and wrecking the things inside. For all their destructive behavior, they found nothing related to the bomb attack. At the time the correspondent filed his report posted at 11:25am Mecca time Thursday, the US forces were still encircling the area of the attack.

Ninwa Province.

Mosul.

Bomb kills up to 47 mourners at funeral of representative of Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr in Mosul.

At least 40 persons were killed when a massive explosion struck a Shi‘i mosque in the at-Tamimi neighborhood of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Thursday, the American Associated Press (AP) reported. The AP said that a person blew himself up in the mosque.

Agence France Presse (AFP) reported that the bomber struck as mourners flocked into a hall next to the Sadrin mosque, where a service was being held for Hisham al-‘Arraji, the Mosul representative for Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr.

“Many people were killed or wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up in the hall where the funeral service was being held,” said one witness.

Although the target of the attack was a representative of Muqtada as-Sadr, the Shi‘i leader who is frequently at odds with the pro-American Shi‘i religious establishment, the AP and other western media in their reports on the attack tried to imply that Resistance forces, largely based among the Sunni population, were responsible for the bombing. Regardless of the weak logic involved in such accusations, it is likely that the western media will attempt to foist blame for the attack on the Sunni community.

One of the original aims of the US occupation of Iraq was to weaken and divide a state that served as a focus of power in the Arab East. Outlined in articles such as “The Three State Solution” by Leslie Gelb in The New York Times of 25 November 2003, the partition of Iraq along sectarian lines has been a constant in US occupation policy.

When the US installed a puppet regime, it assigned seats along religious lines. In the recent sham “election” the US facilitated Kurdish chauvinists in northern Iraq to flood the city of Kirkuk with outside voters, provoking ethnic discord between Kurds on the one side, and Arabs and Turkmen on the other. Meanwhile the US occupation forces have incorporated large numbers of Shi‘i chauvinist Badr Brigade gunmen in their puppet police and so-called “national guard” and used sectarian preachers to incite such fighters against defiant Iraqi Resistance fighters in al-Fallujah. (See related story datelined an-Nasiriyah below.)

Dhi Qar Province.

An-Nasiriyah.

Fulfilling Zionist-American dreams, Shi‘i chauvinist mulla calls for separatism in southern Iraq to match separatism of Kurdish chauvinists in the north.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Karim al-Muhammadawi, a member of the list of pro-American Shi‘i chauvinist candidates who led in the sham “election” farce held on 30 Janurary, called for declaring southern Iraq a “separate region” similar to the other “separate region” envisaged for the largely Kurdish northern part of Iraq. Agence France Presse (AFP) was quoted by the Jordanian daily al-‘Arab al-Yawm on Friday as saying that al-Muhammadawi told a press conference in an-Nasiriyah that the three southern provinces of al-Basrah, Dhi Qar and Maysan should be the subject of a “Southern Region Project” to be incorporated in the bogus “constitution” that the puppet regime is to draw up under American tutelage.

The Shi‘i religious leader, who has the backing of pro-American Shi‘i religious authority Ayatallah ‘Ali as-Sistani, alluded to dreams of seizing the oil wealth in the southern regions of Iraq when he told the press that the aim of the “Southern Project” is to “give the people of the region the opportunity to acquire better positions and state employment and to enjoy the resources that should be distributed in a just fashion.” Al-Muhammadawi added, “we will work forcefully to bring about this region, looking forward to the support of religious authorities and political parties.”

On 6 January 2005 some 600 Shi‘i sectarian personalities announced their intention to create a separatist region in southern Iraq along the lines of that being set up for the Kurdish chauvinists in the north.

In fact the three northern provinces Dahuk, Irbil, and as-Sulaymaniyah where the Kurds predominate were granted self-rule by the Iraqi government of the Baath Party in 1971. Kurdish chauvinist forces collaborating with the US invaders, however, have worked to turn their region into a separatist enclave and haven to Zionist and other hostile alien forces. It is evidently the desire of al-Muhammadawi that the Shi‘i areas of the south of Iraq be dragged into similar subservience to hostile alien powers.

Once again it must be noted that one of the original aims of the US occupation of Iraq was to weaken and divide a state that served as a focus of power in the Arab East. Outlined in articles such as “The Three State Solution” by Leslie Gelb in The New York Times of 25 November 2003, the partition of Iraq along sectarian lines has been a constant in US occupation policy. The efforts of the Kurdish chauvinist parties, the Shi‘i collaborators with the Americans, and the latest statements of al-Muhammadawi represent the latest steps being taken under the flag of the occupation towards the partition of Iraq.

One Italian soldier killed, four more injured when vehicle flips over into ditch.

The local correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Thursday morning that one Italian occupation soldier was killed and four others injured when their vehicle flipped over in the ‘Ali al-Gharbi area west of southern Iraqi city of an-Nasiriyah.

A member of the local puppet police told the correspondent that an Italian military column made up of four armored vehicles was traveling along an elevated dirt path towards the village of ‘Ali al-Gharbi when one of the four vehicles strayed off the road and fell into some brackish water, killing one soldier and injuring four more.

The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam met with one of the Iraq collaborator translators working with the Italian occupation forces who said that the reason the vehicle left the road was that there was heavy rain coming down and the dirt road was rough and muddy and difficult to drive along, even in military vehicles.

Al-Muthanna Province.

As-Samawah.

Powerful blast shakes Japanese base Thursday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 4:25pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while before a powerful explosion had shaken the Japanese occupation forces’ base in as-Samawah, sending dense black smoke rising into the sky. No further details were immediately available.
