元ロシア原子力相を拘束　米の核安全支援金を着服の疑い

　４日のスイスからの報道などによると、同国の司法当局はロシアのアダモフ元原子力相を、核安全システム改善に向けた米国からの対ロ支援金約９００万ドルを着服した疑いで２日に拘束した。米司法当局は同氏を、米エネルギー庁から受け取った資金を投資など別の目的に使ったとして、詐欺と資金洗浄の容疑で告発していた。

　同氏は９８年から０１年まで原子力相を務めた。拘束の容疑についてロシア外務省は、それ以前の９０年代の同氏の個人的なビジネスに関連したもの、と説明している。

Former Russian atomic energy minister Yevgeny Adamov was arrested in Switzerland on Monday, the New York Times has reported.

The daily quoted Adamov’s lawyers as saying that he will soon be indicted of stealing up to $9 million from U.S. Department of Energy aid to improve nuclear safety in Russia. Adamov is awaiting extradition to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he is part owner of a consulting firm, said his chief lawyer Lanny Breuer.

Adamov, 65, who was Russia’s atomic energy minister from 1998 to 2001 stands accused of diverting Department of Energy funds to bank accounts in the U.S. states of Delaware and Pennsylvania and will be indicted for fraud and money-laundering charges, his lawyer said. The lawyer called these charges “baseless”.

The layer also said that Adamov had traveled to Bern to consult with Swiss authorities who had frozen some of his daughter’s bank accounts.

Adamov was appointed energy minister under Boris Yeltsin. He was ousted from his post by President Vladimir Putin in 2001 during an investigation by Russian lawmakers that accused him of benefiting from business dealings while serving as minister.

Russians Suspect U.S. Wants to Get Nuke Secrets From Arrested Ex-Minister

Russian officials suspect former Russian atomic energy minister Yevgeny Adamov’s arrest and possible extradiction to the U.S. is linked to his knowledge of Russia’s nuclear weapons programs.

Russia must have Adamov back in Russia as soon as possible, because he knows too many of the state’s top secrets, including information on nuclear weapons, head of the State Duma committee for energy, transport and communications Valery Yazev said Tuesday.

“All the American accusations are artificial,” Yazev was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying. “The Americans have always disliked Adamov and the way he defended Russia’s interests in the Iranian nuclear programs,” he added.

Moreover, Yazev said the case was a political one and he thought it possible that the U.S. special services could take advantage of Adamov’s arrest and try to get state secrets from him.
