Yeshivat Hakotel chief Elon slams pullout protest activity

Rabbi Mordechai Elon, head of Yeshivat Hakotel and one of the country's more prominent religious Zionist leaders, on Thursday strongly condemned recent rampaging conducted by anti-disengagement protesters.
"Whoever in the supposed named of love for the land is capable of a lynching is a murderer, and whoever in the name of love for the land is capable of placing spikes and pouring oil on roads is a criminal," he said.
Referring to recent violence at the Maoz Yam stronghold and in the Gaza Strip's Muasi area, Elon said that "the role of leadership at a time like this has to be very authoritative and very clear. The most dangerous thing now is to stammer.
"The extremist thugs who came to Gush Katif recently dragged the anti-disengagement struggle backward thousands of miles. What was special about the whole struggle, about the message of the settlement enterprise in general, and of Gush Katif settlement in particular, was that this wasn't done as a private concern of a particular community, or people of a particular town, but as a mission of the State of Israel. The struggle was conducted under the slogans of 'We will win with love,' and 'face to face,' which rightfully earned a great deal of respect and empathy, even if not agreement," Elon said.
"We came here to build the State of Israel together, and we are entitled to be chock full of disputes, but to work together, even in the war of opinions. The hooliganism of the past few days removes that entire assumption."
Elon is also against blocking roads, terming it "hooliganism."
"I see activity like the 'human chain' as sanctifying, and road blocking - as sacrilege. You can't block roads and not expect it will lead to oil spilling. The democratic struggle is supposed to consist of public relations plus a focused campaign against the decision makers and power centers, through active political protest. The struggle is not supposed to be aimed against a Jew innocently driving along at Haifa junction and Geha road," Elon said.
