Koizumi announces retirement
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says he will step down in September next year, when his term as head of the Liberal Democratic Party expires.
Mr Koizumi has made the announcement in a statement to Parliament.
The 63-year-old came to power in April 2001, on a groundswell of popular support for his promises to reform the LDP or destroy it by trying.
He kept the government's top post after winning a three-year term as LDP president in September 2003.
The LDP presidency carries the prime ministership with it, as the party has a majority in the powerful lower house of Parliament.
Mr Koizumi has already been in the post longer than any premier since Yasuhiro Nakasone finished a fifth year in 1987.
