Explosion targets mercenaries in motorcade in Baghdad.

A massive explosion shook the part of Baghdad where as-Sa‘dun Street begins near at-Tahrir Square in the downtown area at about 11am local time Saturday morning.

Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the blast came from a car bomb that went off next to a column of armored cars of the sort usually used by American security agencies. The explosion destroyed four American security cars together with all aboard. Thirty-one people were wounded, among them civilians, the witnesses said.

The blast also disabled three private cars and set some of the shops nearby on fire. US and Iraqi puppet forces surrounded the area to keep the press away, as usual. Ambulances transported the dead and wounded away from the scene as American helicopters hovered over the area.

Just minutes before the bombing Resistance forces bombarded the US occupation headquarters in the area of the Republican Palace, known to the invaders as the “green zone,” with rockets.

Al-Jazeera satellite TV reported that the blast targeted a motorcade of three cars carrying foreigners. Two of the cars were hit and five other civilian cars that were parked nearby were also damaged. Plumes of smoke rose over the area after the blast as puppet police backed up US troops in sealing off the area from the press.

The target of the blast was apparently foreigners working for a so-called security company, i.e., a company that supplies mercenaries to the US occupation forces.

The attack, which took place in a predominantly Shi‘i area appeared sectarian and the Board called for not letting the “parties that try to use the current uneasy situation to carry out their plans to sabotage Iraq and sow the seeds of sectarian and ethnic conflict.” The Board statement expressed condolences to the victims and offered prayers for the recovery of the injured.

An-Najaf Province.

An-Najaf.

Shi‘i puppet officials intercede with Muqtada as-Sadr to head off clash with US forces.

Following fighting on Friday between the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia loyal to Shi ‘ religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr and US occupation forces in an-Najaf, intensive efforts were reported underway by Shi‘i religious and political figures on Saturday to put a halt to the fighting. The house of Muqtada as-Sadr saw the arrival of Iraqi puppet officals trying to convince as-Sadr to give the US forces three days to release the Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen whose arrest sparked the Friday clashes. As-Sadr had issued a general call to arms after US forces tried to prevent demonstrations for the release of the men on Friday.

Among the prominent Shi‘i puppet officials to visit as-Sadr’s home in an-Najaf was Muwaffaq ar-Rabi‘i, the puppet so-called “national security adviser” in the puppet “government” installed under US auspices recently.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that talks were still underway at the time he filed his report ミ posted at 12:47pm Mecca time Saturday, as the city waits in anticipation in what feels like a very tense calm.
