Sunday, 19 June 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.

Al-Qa’im.

US forces fall back from western approaches to al-Karabilah after heavy fighting. Forty Iraqi civilians killed in savage US bombing of residential areas Saturday night.

In a dispatch posted at 9:40am Sunday morning, Mecca time, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that during the early hours of Sunday US forces fell back from the western approaches to the town of al-Karabilah, north of al-Qa’im, following a fierce battle that raged between 2pm and 4am local time.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Qa’im reported that in the course of the fighting on Saturday, two US Apache helicopters were lost over the western deserts around al-Qa’im because of the sand storms that raged in the area. Several US military vehicles that had been deployed in the front lines to the west of the city were destroyed in the fighting.

At the time of writing on Sunday, relative calm prevailed in the city, with the exception of the sound of the explosions of mortar shells being fired by the Iraqi Resistance at the rear ranks of the US occupation troops.

Quds Press reported that after three days of fighting, US forces had failed to break the defenses of the Iraqi Resistance fighers in al-Qa’im. Sources in the Iraqi puppet forces accompanying the Americans told Quds Press that grueling, bloody fighting raged through Saturday-Sunday night, particularly to the west of the city, as American forces tried in vain to break in.

The sources told Quds Press that the Resistance was able to halt the advance of the American attackers through the explosion of numerous bombs and booby-traps that the Resistance had planted on the road to the villages of al-Karabilah and al-‘Ubaydi.

The sources said that the bombs had destroyed 16 various types of American vehicle, including Humvees, and two tanks and a number of other armored vehicles, Quds Press reported. Quds Press noted that the sandstorms that set in on Saturday night meant that there was a loss of visibility on the main road to al-Qa’im. The storm was so intense and thick that the American attackers had to stop their advance. The same storms, however, allowed the Iraqi Resistance fighters to mount punishing rocket attacks on the US invaders that, sources told Quds Press, cost numerous American lives.

Dr. Hamdi al-Alusi, an Iraqi physician, told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that there were more than 40 civilians killed in al-Qa’im ミ 21 of them women and children. All were killed when the US forces bombed their homes Saturday night.

The correspondent reported that the Resistance ranks were still firm and cohesive. He denied claims by some news media that Resistance fighters had withdrawn from the city leaving occupation forces deployed in various of its neighborhoods to seize control. The correspondent confirmed a commander of the Iraqi puppet forces as saying that at the present time, the Iraqi Resistance controls more than 60 percent of the city.

Convoy of reinforcements moves to al-Qa’im from al-Hadithah.

In a dispatch posted at 9:59am Mecca time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier more than 30 US armored vehicles set out from the city of al-Hadithah towards the city of al-Qa’im, some 110km to the west along the US strategic road that the American occupation forces use exclusively for transport of their military materiel between the towns of al-Anbar Province.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the US convoy has heavy air cover in the form of American fighter airplanes and Apache helicopters. The correspondent said that at the time of writing, the American column was only about half an hour from the outskirts of al-Qa’im.

The correspondent noted that the convoy was an indication of how heavy US losses had been in the course of fighting during the previous night.

More than 70 civilians still buried under rubble after savage American bombing; 300 families near death from thirst pinned down by American snipers.

In a dispatch posted at 3:30pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Qa’im reported that Dr. Hamdi al-Alusi, the Director of al-Qa’im General Hospital, had announced that there were still more than 70 victims of the American attack on his city buried under the rubble of their homes. He said that among those more than 40 were the remains of women and children.

Dr. al-Alusi told Mafkarat al-Islam that more dead and wounded civilians had been brought to the hospital than had been expected at the start of the American offensive.

Another physician in the hospital reported that American helicopter gun ships had deliberately attacked houses and peaceful districts in the city, while they did not dare to fly over the areas where Resistance fighters were located for fear of being hit by Resistnace ground fire and rockets.

The Director of the Iraqi Red Crescent in al-Qa’im reported that more than 300 families in the area of al-Karabilah have been without food or water for three days and are near death. He said that American snipers perched on rooftops shot dead anyone who leaves his house, paying no attention to whether they are fighters or civilians. People are therefore trapped without and dying of hunger and thirst.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported members of the Iraqi puppet military could be seen in the area posting portraits of pro-American Shi‘i religious authority ‘Ali as-Sistani on their military vehicles, adding a sectarian character to offensive against the city of al-Qa’im ミ which is predominantly Sunni.

A picture of Dr. Hamdi al-Alusi, the Director of al-Qa’im General Hospital can be seen at: http://www.islammemo.cc/news/one_news.asp?IDnews=69718.

US, Iraqi puppet troops go on house robbing spree in al-Qa’im area.

In a dispatch posted at 3:40pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of the town of al-Karabilah near al-Qa’im that US troops and their Iraqi stooges have been systematically robbing their houses and those of people in nearby towns.

The correspondent in al-Qa’im reported owners of homes that were robbed as saying that Iraqi puppet forces stole all the gold, Iraqi dinars, and US dollars, telephones, air conditioners, and other items from their houses that they could carry.

Al-Hajj Hasan Kamil told the correspondent that Iraqi puppet forces robbed his house right in front of him, taking his money and appliances and loading them in their military vehicles.

Another local resident told the correspondent that American troops had raided his home, locked all the family in one room and stolen everything of value in his house, including more than 80 miskals of gold.

Americans call in British troops to help them battle Iraqi Resistnace in al-Qa’im.

In a dispatch posted at 4:25pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a few hours earlier British troops had arrived in the area of al-Karabilah in the area of al-Qa’im on the border with Syria.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that British troops were taking part with US Marines in fighting against Iraqi Resistance forces in al-Qa’im.

An American Marine staff officer in al-Qa’im admitted only that the British air force was taking part in the fighting. But the correspondent and residents of the city confirmed that British ground troops were at the time of writing advancing towards al-Qa’im along with American occupation troops in a clear indication of what the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent called the “real fix” that the Americans had got themselves into by launching their offensive against al-Qa’im.

Al-Hadithah.

Bodies of two American profiteer contractors found shot to death in western Iraq.

Iraqi puppet troops discovered the bodies of American profiteer contractors working with the US occupation forces in the western regions of Iraq.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the area reported that the three bodies belonged to two Americans and their Iraqi driver. They were found shot to death. The black Cherokee in which the Americans were riding was burned. An Iraqi military doctor told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Americans had been killed at least three days ago and their bodies dumped by the side of a farm road.

Iraqi puppet forces recovered the bodies from the scene of the attack and delivered them to one of the US bases in the city of al-Hadithah.

The correspondents for Mafkarat al-Islam in al-Hadithah were able to take photographs of the bodies before they were hauled away from where they were discovered. That picture can be viewed at: http://www.islammemo.cc/news/one_news.asp?IDnews=69709.

Baghdad.

Minesweeper doesn’t save them: five US troops killed by Resistance bomb in Abu Ghurayb Sunday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol on the old Abu Ghurayb road at 4pm local time Sunday afternoon. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in Abu Ghurayb reported that the Iraqi Resistance had planted the bomb by the side of the road and that it had blown up by an American armored Humvee, destroying the vehicle and killing five US troops instantly. Fire could be seen blazing out all four sides of the vehicle, the correspondent reported.

US forces completely encircled the area after the attack and imposed a curfew and quickly evacuated the bodies of those killed in the bombing. Captain Qasim ‘Ali of the Iraqi puppet forces confirmed to Mafkarat al-Islam that five American soldiers were killed in the blast, calling the attack a “surprise,” since that particular patrol was following a mine sweeper which, it was expected, would have detected the explosive device. But for some reason, the bomb went undetected and then exploded with deadly results.

Resistance bomb targets US patrol in as-Sayyidiyah late Sunday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance roadside bomb exploded by a US patrol south west of Baghdad in the as-Sayyidiyah area at 7:30pm local time late Sunday afternoon.

Residents of as-Sayyidiyah told Mafkarat al-Islam that the bomb was planted on the road that leads to Baghdad University and that it went off as a patrol of five US military vehicles was passing by. The witnesses said that the blast destroyed one Humvee killing three US troops and wounding two more.

Wave of arrests of Sunni religious figures continues in ad-Durah.

Iraqi puppet so-called shock troop police arrested Shaykh Hasan Muhawwil ‘Abbas al-Ghazali, the imam of the Ya Sin Wa-al-Qur’an al-Hakim Mosque in the Abu Dashir area of the southern Baghdad suburb of ad-Durah at 2am on Thursday night, 2 June 2005. Mafkarat al-Islam reported Sunday that the arrests took place in raids by the puppet forces on the house of Shaykh al-Ghazali in residential buildings near the Ya Sin Mosque.

Shaykh al-Ghazali is a member of the municipal council in the area and a student in the College of Political Science. He has also taken part in numerous religious and political conferences and is the author of numerous articles in newspapers and magazines.

Shaykh al-Ghazali is the second religious leader associated with the Ya Sin Mosque to be arrested. Shaykh Qasim Nazim Ghaffuri was arrested by the US occupation forces a month earlier and is still in custody.

Shaykh al-Ghazali was also one of three Sunni religious leaders arrested in ad-Durah that day, the others being Shaykh Hafiz Zaydan al-‘Ubaydi the imam of the al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam Mosque; and Shaykh Hasan Jasim al-Jabburi, the imam of the Khalid ibn al-Walid Mosque. Both are members of the Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ Scholars, the highest Sunni religious authority in occupied Iraq.

In all more than 10 religious leaders have been arrested by the occupation forces and the repressive agencies of their stooges in ad-Durah.

The latest arrests are a part of a country-wide wave of raids and arrests of Sunni religious leaders by the repressive apparatus of the puppet regime, intent on stirring up sectarian tensions in the country.

Bodies of nine Sunni men arrested last Tuesday and subjected to torture by Iraqi puppet police discovered east of Baghdad.

Quds Press reported Sunday that the bodies of nine Iraqi Sunnis arrested by the Iraqi puppet police four days earlier in the al-Iskan area of western Baghdad.

The Baghdad correspondent of Quds Press reported sources in the so-called Islamic Party, that has collaborated with the American invaders, that the bodies were found Saturday in the Kasrah wa-‘Atsh area east of Baghdad and that they had been arrested by the puppet police on Tuesday, 14 June.

Nothing more was heard of the men after their arrest.

One of the nine men was the muezzin of a mosque in the area where they were arrested. Three others were brothers from the area.

The bodies showed clear signs of torture. A number of them were missing extremities, some had their hands cut off, others had their eyes gouged out, Quds Press reported.

Salah ad-Din Province.

Samarra’.

Resistance bombards US base in Samarra’ Sunday afternoon.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired six 120mm heavy mortar rounds into the US base in Samarra’ at 3pm Sunday afternoon, local time. Residents of the nearby neighborhood of as-Siakak told Mafkarat al-Islam that the barrage sent plumes of smoke rising into the sky over the US occupied facility.

Tikrit.

Resistance martyrdom car bomber blasts puppet force base in Tikrit Sunday, killing four puppet troops and collaborators.

An Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter blew up a car bomb in Tikrit on Sunday. A source in the Iraqi puppet military told Quds Press that the blast targeted the main gate of the headquarters of the Iraqi puppet army and the Office for Joint Coordination of the Iraqi puppet forces with the US invader troops.

The source told Quds Press that the Resistance fighter drove a white car towards the main gate of the facility where an Iraqi puppet check point was located. The car blew up as it neared the checkpoint, killing four and wounding 18. Most of the dead and wounded were Iraqi puppet troops, though the source said that some of the dead were Iraqi “civilians” who worked on the puppet base.

Immediately after the attack US and Iraqi puppet forces closed off the area and prevented all journalists from approaching as a US helicopter prowled the skies above threateningly.

At-Taji.

Resistance martyrdom car bomber kills five US troops in at-Taji midday Sunday.

An Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter drove an explosives-packed car into a US armored column in the at-Taji area north of Baghdad at 12:30pm Sunday local time.

Residents of the ad-Dulayimah village east of at-Taji who witnessed the attack told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance fighter in his explosives-laden car broke into the column of six US armored vehicles and two Humvees and blew up near one of the armored vehicles.

The blast destroyed one armored vehicle, killing five US troops and wounding two more. After the attack American forces encircled the area and two US helicopters landed in the area. The Americans hauled away the vehicles damaged in the blast.

Diyala Province.

Ba‘qubah.

Resistance blasts US base near Ba‘qubah Sunday afternoon.

Iraqi Resistsance forces fired seven Grad rockets into the US base west of Ba‘qubah at 5pm local time Sunday afternoon. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city reported that after the barrage, clouds of thick smoke enveloped the American-occupied facility as four powerful secondary explosions shook the area from within the base.

Three US helicopters flew in and then landed inside the facility apparently to evacuate American casualties. No further information on the extent of casualties was known because US forces had surrounded the area and strictly instructed Iraqi puppet troops not to speak about such matters to the reporters gathered outside.

Al-Mada’in.

Resistance bomb blows up US tank in al-Mada’in Sunday afternoon, killing four US troops.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by a US tank column on the main street in al-Mada’in at 5pm local time Sunday afternoon.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Mada’in just southeast of Baghdad, reported that an explosives-packed Supra that was parked by the side of the road blew up as a US armored column passed by.

The blast totally destroyed one US tank, killing four US troops and wounding two more. American forces raced to close roads to the area and prevent local people and journalists from approaching as they hauled away the casualties and the wreckage of the tank from the area.

Ninwa Province.

Mosul.

Resistance bomb blasts US patrol in Mosul early Sunday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by the main road in the al-Islah az-Zira‘i neighborhood of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul at 2pm Sunday afternoon local time.

Residents of the area who witnessed the attack told Mafkarat al-Islam that the bomb blew up the moment that a patrol of five US Humvees was passing by. The blast totally destroyed one of the Humvees, killing three US troops and wounding three more.

US forces release 43 Iraqi women it had imprisoned.

In a bulletin posted at 11:10am Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation forces had released 43 Iraqi woman prisoners that they had captured over previous days. The Americans took the women into custody to try to pressure their husbands and brothers ミ accused of belonging to the Resistance ミ to surrender to the invaders.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Rahim Marhaj, the puppet “general director of administrative affairs” for the Province in which Mosul is located, as announcing that “the American forces had released 43 Iraqi women, the wives, sisters, and daughters of Iraqis belonging to the armed groupings in Iraq.”

The American arrest of the women aroused outrage among the local populace hundreds of whom took part in mass demonstrations in the city’s al-Mutahnna ibn Harith ash-Shaybani neighborhood on Saturday that gave the Americans three days to release the women. The protesters threatened a campaign of civil disobedience and warned that the youth would join the Resistance if the Americans continued to hold the innocent women.

(See “Enraged protest rallies give Americans three days to release dozens of women captured by US troops,” in Iraqi Resistance Report for Saturday, 18 June 2005.)

Ash-Shuruqat.

Resistance ambushes US convoy.

In a dispatch posted at 6:40pm Sunday afternoon, Mecca time, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces attacked a convoy of US military trucks hauling provisions and equipment to US forces on the main road in the ash-Shuruqat area.

Residents of the area who witnessed the attack told Mafkarat al-Islam that about seven Iraqi Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons including RPG7 rocket-propelled grenades attacked the column of two Humvees and eight trucks , setting two trucks ablaze and killing two US troops and wounding two more.

Tall ‘Afar.

US aircraft blows up mosque killing guard, custodian. Resistance threatens retaliation.

US occupation forces rocketed the al-Baqi‘ Mosque in Tall ‘Afar, west of Mosul, on the pretext that it was a haven for Resistance fighters. Medical sources in the city told Mafkarat al-Islam that an American fighter plane fired a rocket into the mosque Sunday morning destroying it and killing the guard and the custodian of the building.

Iraqi Resistance forces in Tall ‘Afar issued a communiqu in response to the murderous attack, threatening the US occupation forces saying: “Your churches for our mosques and your blood for our blood. It will be something you will see and not just hear, you occupiers!” The message was signed “the Squadrons of the Mujahideen.”

Al-Basrah Province.

Al-Basrah.

Tortured body of Sunni Shaykh buried after puppet police station delivers it to local hospital.

The residents of al-Basrah buried Shaykh ‘Abd as-Salam ‘Alwan al-Ghanim, the deputy for the al-Ghanim tribe, one of the largest Sunni tribes in the southern Iraqi city of al-Basrah. Shaykh al-Ghanim was found dead in the al-Harithah area, 30km north of al-Basrah. His body had been mutilated. His left hand had been burned from the palm to the wrist. The signs of electric shock torture were visible on various parts of his body, as were bruises and other signs of beating. There was, in fact, hardly a part of his body that was not discolored and turned either red or blue from the intensity of the torture that the Shaykh suffered as he slowly died.

Unknown persons intercepted Shaykh al-Ghanim’s car and kidnapped him several days ago as he was on his way home from the mosque after the night prayer in the Jallab area of Abu al-Khasib. The assailants were able to abduct him despite the fact that he fought back according to witnesses who were nearby when he was kidnapped and later spoke to the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent.

After a three-day search, the Shaykh’s body was found in the al-Fayha’ Hospital in al-Basrah where it had been brought from the al-Harithah puppet police station on Saturday night.

Shaykh al-Ghanim was known for his strong views in defense of the rights of the Sunni community in al-Basrah. He strenuously defended imprisoned Sunnis and had a major role in defending the families of the Abu al-Khasib area during the most recent campaign of sectarian arrests there. Sources close to the Shaykh told Mafkarat al-Islam that he was courageous and disregarded the threats directed at him on more than one occasion. One relative who spoke to Shaykh al-Ghanim just days before his abduction said that the Shaykh had told him that he was being followed and that he might be killed any time.

The al-Ghanim tribe held the funeral for the martyred shaykh in Abu al-Khasib on Sunday afternoon. Large numbers of Sunnis turned out for the farewell raising signs that denounced his cowardly murder. The funeral procession of some 100 cars traveled a three-kilometer distance as mourners carried the Shaykh on their shoulders from near the Bab Sulayman Mosque to the Sunni al-Hasan al-Basri Cemetery in az-Zubayr. Speakers at the ceremony mentioned the Shaykh’s honorable stances in defense of Islam and called for patient perseverance and firmness in the face of adversity.

It was the second such funeral in 20 days, following the assassination of a prominent member of the community of the as-Saqr Mosque, ‘Abd as-Salam ad-Dardisi.

A photograph showing scars and mutilation on Shaykh al-Ghanim’s body can be seen at: http://www.islammemo.cc/news/one_news.asp?IDnews=69764.
