Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 16 July 2005. Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.

Saturday, 16 July 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.
Ar-Ramadi.

Resistance battles US, puppet troops in downtown ar-Ramadi Saturday afternoon. At least five American troops reported killed.

In a dispatch posted at 2:10pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that violent fighting had been under way for about an hour in the middle of ar-Ramadi between Iraqi Resistance forces and US occupation troops together with Iraqi stooges.

Residents of the ad-Dubbat neighborhood of the city told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that the fighting broke out at about 2pm local time when a joint US-Iraqi puppet patrol entered their neighborhood.

More than 20 Iraqi Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons, including RPG7 rocket-propelled grenades and BKC machine guns attacked the US and puppet troops, setting two Humvees on fire and killing five American troops. Four other US soldiers had been wounded as of the time of reporting.

After taking those casualties, the Americans had to call in reinforcements from the US base to the west of the city (al-Warrar), and more than four US armored vehicles and five Humvees showed up on the battle scene.

At the time of reporting the fighting was still underway.

Al-Khalidiyah.

Resistance bomb blasts US fuel tanker killing American soldier Saturday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US military truck convoy hauling fuel to American occupation troops on the main road in al-Khalidiyah west of Baghdad at 3pm local time Saturday.

Residents of al-Khalidiyah who witnessed the attack told Mafkarat al-Islam that a bomb was planted by the side of the main road leading to ar-Ramadi in al-Khalidiyah. It exploded as a column of eight US fuel tankers and four Humvees was passing by.

The witnesses said that the blast set one American truck on fire, killing one US soldier.

Hit.

Resistance blasts US headquarters in former Teachers’ Institute Saturday morning.

In dispatch posted at 12:05pm Mecca time Saturday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded that US headquarters set up in the former Teachers Training Institute in the middle of Hit in western Iraq with six mortar rounds Saturday morning.

Residents of the al-‘Ummal neighborhood of Hit told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance attack brought down upper parts of the building and heavily damaged other sections of the structure. The witnesses said that there were dead and wounded among the American occupation troops inside.

During the Resistance bombardment, the Americans inside the building opened fire indiscriminately, wounding two civilians in the area.

US and puppet troops closed off the area where the attack occurred, making an exact assessment of US casualties impossible.

Resistance bomb leaves a reported three US troops dead in Hit Saturday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 10:20am Mecca time Saturday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet patrol in the al-Mu‘allimin neighborhood in the middle of Hit in western Iraq.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of the neighborhood as saying that a Resistance bomb, which had been planted by the side of the main road in al-Mu‘allimin, blew up as the joint patrol was passing. The explosion set one Humvee on fire, killing three US troops and wounding another.

Following the blast, US forces backed up by Iraqi stooges surrounded al-Mu‘allimin and the adjacent neighborhoods and launched a campaign of raids and searches that was still going on at the time the correspondent submitted his report. Fifteen local residents had so far been arrested.

Al-Fallujah.

Four US troops reported killed in Resistance bombing in as-Saqlawiyah early Saturday.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the as-Saqlawiyah area, north of al-Fallujah at 8am local time.

Residents of the az-Zagharid area of northern as-Saqlawiyah told Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent that a bomb planted in the middle of an unpaved farm road blew up under one of the US Humvees in an American patrol. The blast totally destroyed the Humvee, killing its four-man crew.

Al-Baghdadi.

Resistance bombards US ‘Ayn al-Asad base early Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded the main US base in the al-Baghdadi area, known as ‘Ayn al-Asad in western Iraq, at 7am local time Saturday morning.

Residents of al-Baghdadi told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance bombarded the American occupied-facility with four medium-range Katyusha rockets setting off four violent explosions.

Then, minutes later, the Resistance fired more Katyusha missiles into the base sending up clouds of smoke over various parts of the American-occupied facility. US helicopters were seen over the base and surrounding area searching for the attackers but to no avail.

Baghdad.

Iraqi experts accuse US forces of being behind car bombing that killed 32 children three days ago.

Iraqi sources are saying that the car bombing last Wednesday that killed some 32 local children was the work not of the Iraqi Resistance but of the US occupation troops.

A traffic lieutenant who asked not to be identified told Mafkarat al-Islam that US solders came racing crazily out of the street less than a minute before the explosion. Then after the blast they did not go back to where it happened but continued to hurry out of the area.

A captain in the fire department who asked not to be identified told Mafkarat al-Islam that the explosion was extremely powerful and left a big crater in the earth ミ something that other car bombs do not do. The captain said that this was because the bombs used by the Iraqi Resistance are made from Russian-made TNT that was in the possession of the Army of the Republic of Iraq before the US occupation.

He said that former soldiers are very familiar with the effects of such explosives, and know that during an explosion it blows upwards, not downwards, and for this reason US forces prohibit the taking of photographs from the scenes of attacks where the effects of explosions are obvious.

When the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent asked the fire captain what he meant by his remarks and whether he was accusing the Americans of setting the blast, he replied, “The Traffic Stop Director for the area, Ahmad Kamal was fired because of his statement one hour after the explosion in which he said that the US forces were behind the blast. This was regarded as an ‘irresponsible statement’ by him and attributed to the fact that he had lost control of himself and had a breakdown after the bombing and to the fact that he is a Sunni and does not want to believe that what is happening in Iraq is ‘terrorism’.”

(For coverage of the bombing on the day it occurred, see: “Car bomb targets US checkpoint in ar-Rustamiyah,” in the Iraqi Resistance Report for Wednesday, 13 July 2005.)

General in Iraqi Army from before the US occupation found dead along with his son after arrest by puppet security forces.

The body of a General who served in the Army of the Republic of Iraq before the American invasion of the country in 2003 was found along with that of his son, according to a dispatch by the Qatari News Agency (Qana) posted at 10:41am GMT Saturday, quoting a broadcast by US propaganda Radio Sawa.

The American radio station quoted sources as saying that the general had been killed along with his son after they had been arrested by the puppet so-called “shock troops” of the puppet so-called “Iraqi ministry of the interior” which operates in service to the US occupation.

Babil Province.
Al-Musayyib.

Suspicious bomb attack kills 60 people in al-Musayyib Saturday.

At least 60 persons were killed and more than 80 others wounded when an explosion occurred on Saturday evening by a fuel station near a Shi‘i mosque in al-Musayyib city, south of Baghdad. The puppet police announced that the blast set nearby homes, shops and a crowded coffee house ablaze, causing a high casualty count.

Early reports, such as that by Agence France Presse (AFP) and monitored late Saturday night by Mafkarat al-Islam, quoted a puppet police spokesman as saying that the blast occurred when a man wearing an explosive belt blew himself up near a fuel tank truck.

Then in a dispatch posted at 2:19am Sunday morning Mecca time (11:19pm Saturday GMT) al-Jazeera satellite TV reported the puppet so-called “Iraqi interior ministry” as saying that the blast was caused by a bomb planted in a fuel tank truck that was parked in the popular district where there is neither a puppet police station nor were there any American troops.

Resistance bombards US base early Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired four mortar rounds into the US base in al-Musayyib, south of Baghdad at 6am local time Saturday morning.

Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the barrage set off powerful explosions inside the US-occupied facility.

Salah ad-Din Province.
Samarra’.

Resistance bomb blasts US armored vehicle, killing five US troops.

In a dispatch posted at 1:05pm Mecca time Saturday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a high-explosive Iraqi Resistance bomb blew up by a US armored Humvee in Samarra’ on Saturday morning, destroying the vehicle and killing five US troops who were aboard it.

A source in the Iraqi puppet army told the Samarra’ correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that five US troops were killed when the vehicle was blown up. He said that the bomb had been planted in the middle of the road and that it appeared to have been made of Austrian artillery shells that the Army of the Republic of Iraq used to use. The shells were apparently wired together in a sequence, increasing the intensity of the explosion when they went off.

The Resistance group Army of the Ansar as-Sunnah [Partisans of the Prophet’s Practice] took responsibility for the attack in a communiqu, a copy of which was obtained by the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent.

Al-Mashahidah.

Two US troops reported killed in roadside bombing in al-Mashahidah Saturday morning.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US armored column on the main road in the al-Mashahidah area, northwest of Baghdad at 8am local time Saturday morning.

Residents of al-Mashahidah told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that a bomb, which was planted by the side of the main road leading to Samarra’ in the north, blew up as a column of five US armored vehicles and four Humvees was passing. The blast set one of the American armored vehicles on fire, killing two US troops and wounding four more American soldiers.

For its part, the Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA) in a dispatch posted at 6:01pm Kuwait time reported a source in the Iraqi puppet security services as claiming that the bombing inflicted no deaths or injuries on the American troops.

Diyala Province.
Al-Mada’in.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by a US armored column in the city of al-Mada’in, southeast of Baghdad Saturday afternoon.

Residents of the city told Mafkarat al-Islam that an explosives-laden car that was parked by the side of the main road at the northern entrance to al-Mada’in blew up when a column of six US armored vehicles and two Humvees passed by at 6pm local time Saturday afternoon.

The blast destroyed one American armored vehicle and damaged one Humvee, killing five American troops and wounding three more.

Al-Khalis.

Resistance attacks US-Iraqi puppet camp leaving three US troops, five Iraqi puppet soldiers dead.

In a dispatch posted at 5pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces attacked a joint camp of US and Iraqi puppet forces in al-Khalis, northwest of Ba‘qubah.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in Diyala Province reported witnesses who live in the al-Khalis area as saying that Resistance fighters attacked the camp located at the southern entrance to the city, firing four 82mm mortar rounds into it. The barrage partly destroyed the camp.

The witnesses said that a number of Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons then attacked the base, killing three US troops and five Iraqi puppet soldiers and wounding three more Americans as well.

The Resistance fighters then withdrew from the area having suffered no casualties. American forces encircled the zone, preventing local people and journalists from approaching. About 10 US military vehicles then showed up to haul away the dead and wounded Americans and Iraqi puppet troops from the scene.

Al-Mundhiriyah.

Resistance bombardment fells two US observation towers on Iranian border.

In a bulletin posted at 12:50pm Saturday Mecca time, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier Iraqi Resistance forces mounted a rocket attack on the US border observation towers in the al-Mundhiriyah border complex at the al-Khuwaylid point in eastern Iraq on the Iranian frontier.

The Resistance barrage brought down two American observation towers that were part of a structure with cement barricades, killing or wounding a number of US troops. Two rockets went astray and landed some distance from the towers.

After the attack, US forces surrounded the area and closed the borders, which remained sealed at the time the correspondent filed his report. Swarms of US fighter aircraft and helicopters flocked into the area. Local residents say it is likely that the American craft violated Iranian airspace in the course of those operations flying around the environs of the border complex.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that it had been impossible to obtain any information on the nature and extent of casualties as a result of the bombardment because there are no Iraqi puppet troops at the American border control complex and the Americans will not give statements to any journalist.

Ninwa Province.
Mosul.

An Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter blew himself up in a puppet police station in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, according to a dispatch posted by Quds Press at 9:02am GMT Saturday.

Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Nazzal of the Ninwa Province puppet police told the Quds Press correspondent that a Resistance martyrdom fighter wearing an explosives belt blew himself up in the Hamam al-‘Alil puppet police station in southern Mosul.

Nazzal said that four puppet policemen were killed in the blast and about 18 other puppet police were wounded.

Tall ‘Afar.

Resistance bombards US base east of Tall ‘Afar Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired eight mortar rounds at the joint US-Iraqi puppet base east of the city of Tall ‘Afar in northern Iraq at 10am local time Saturday morning.

Witnesses in the city told Mafkarat al-Islam that the bombardment set off powerful explosions inside the base, followed by secondary blasts as American munitions began going off. Clouds of smoke billowed into the sky over the area.

At-Ta’mim Province.
Kirkuk.

Resistance martyrdom car bomber strikes US convoy in Kirkuk.

An Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter drove an explosives-packed car into a US military convoy in Kirkuk.

A local observer told Quds Press that the Resistance attacker in his car bomb rammed directly into one American vehicle, setting it completely on fire and killing or wounding all aboard. The blast also damaged a second US vehicle in the column, according to a Quds Press report posted at 9:29am GMT Saturday morning.

US forces immediately closed off the area, preventing anyone from approaching. US spokesmen then claimed that two American soldiers had been “wounded” in the attack and that the blast had damaged one of their vehicles.

Resistance bombards US base in Kirkuk airport Saturday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired four Grad rockets into the US base in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Saturday morning.

A source in the Iraqi puppet military told Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent in Kirkuk that four Resistance Grad rockets blasted into the US base set up in Kirkuk International Airport at 10am local time. A number of US troops were killed or wounded in the attack, the source said, without specifying the exact nature or extent of the casualties.

Al-Huwayjah.

Resistance car bomb blasts puppet column.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by an Iraqi puppet convoy in al-Huwayjah on Saturday morning, according to witnesses cited by Quds Press in a report posted at 9:29am GMT Saturday morning.

Agence France Presse (AFP) as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam reported a British Defence Ministry spokesman as saying that they could “confirm the deaths of three troops who died of wounds inflicted in hostile action in Maysan Province in the early hours of Saturday morning.”

Dhi Qar Province.

Agence France Presse (AFP) as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam, reported that the Iraqi puppet police on Saturday announced that the judge Nur ad-Din Ahmad had been shot to death in an attack on the building he occupied with other judges working for the occupation regime in an-Nasiriyah.

The attack took place at about 10:30pm local time Friday night. Dr. Maytham al-Baka’ of an-Nasiriyah hospital confirmed that the judge had died from shots fired at close range. One of the bullets had lodged in his head, causing death.

Puppet judge Nur ad-Din Ahmad was a native of the northern city of Kirkuk and was the first puppet judge to be assassinated in an-Nasiriyah, 375km south of Baghdad.
