Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 28 July 2005. Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.

Thursday, 28 July 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.
Al-Fallujah.

Two US soldiers reported killed in Resistance bombing midday Thursday.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet force patrol on the road to ath-Tharthar near the offices of the regional government in al-Fallujah ミ a facility currently occupied by US forces who have turned it into one of their headquarters.

The al-Fallujah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of the ad-Dubbat neighborhood in central al-Fallujah as saying that a bomb that was planted by the side of the ath-Tharthar road blew up as a joint patrol was passing at 1pm local time Thursday.

The blast set one American Humvee on fire, killing two US troops and three Iraqi puppet soldiers and wounding two more American troops.

Al-Habbaniyah.

Resistance destroys US minesweeper vehicle “Washington” in concentrated attack Thursday afternoon.

In a bulletin posted at 6:30pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short time before, Iraqi Resistance forces had mounted an attack with two bombs and then rocket-propelled grenades, destroying a US mine sweeper vehicle in the city of al-Habbaniyah, west of al-Fallujah.

Eye witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that an American column was on patrol in the middle of al-Habbaniyah with a giant mine-sweeper vehicle in the van. Two Iraqi Resistance bombs exploded under the vehicle simultaneously, severely damaging it. At that point Iraqi Resistance fighters armed with RPG7 shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenade launchers opened fire on the column, destroying the mine sweeper completely and killing the two American solders aboard it.

A source in the Iraqi puppet army confirmed the incident to the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent. The source also confirmed that there were a total of three mine-sweeping vehicles in the city, one of which has now been destroyed.

The correspondent reported that the number of Resistance attacks in the area had noticeably decreased since the arrival of the mine sweepers in the city.

There are also unconfirmed reports that a third soldier was also killed in the attack, but the cause of his death is not clear, but he was in the column that came under attack.

At the time of writing the correspondent reported that US and Iraqi puppet troops had closed off the area where the attack occurred, apparently awaiting the arrival of giant vehicles that can carry away the wrecked mine sweeper ミ which was named “Minesweeper Washington.” The wrecked minesweeper was still lying in the road on fire as the correspondent filed his report.

Resistance bombards US camp north of al-Fallujah shortly after midnight Thursday.

Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded the US camp north of al-Fallujah in western Iraq with three medium-range Grad rockets at 1am Thursday morning local time.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported residents of the northern al-Fallujah neighborhood of al-Jaghifi as saying that three violent explosions shook the American camp as the Grad rockets blasted into it, setting fires and sending smoke billowing over the US-occupied facility.

Resistance bomb blasts joint US-Iraqi puppet patrol Wednesday night.

Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent in the city that a Resistance bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet foot patrol near the Great Mosque in the west of al-Fallujah at 9pm Wednesday night. The blast killed one American soldier and wounded three more. Three Iraqi puppet troops were also killed and one more wounded.

Al-Hadithah.

Resistance fighters ambush deputy puppet police commander in al-Hadithah killing him Thursday morning.

Iraqi Resistance fighters shot and killed Captain ‘Abd al-Jaghifi, the deputy puppet police commander in the city of al-Hadithah in an attack in the ash-Shurtah neighborhood in the middle of the city.

The al-Hadithah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that members of the Iraqi Resistance attacked the puppet official’s vehicle convoy at about 10am local time Thursday morning. A source in the puppet army told Mafkarat al-Islam that four Resistance fighters came out of one of the side streets along the main road in the city along which a convoy of vehicles was traveling towards the al-Hadithah puppet police headquarters. The fighters, armed with machine guns and medium weapons including RPG7 rocket-propelled grenades, attacked the column of puppet police vehicles. The Resistance fighters destroyed one pickup belonging to the Iraqi puppet police and the white Land Cruiser car in which the deputy puppet police chief was traveling.

The source confirmed that the target of the attack was the deputy puppet police chief in al-Hadithah and that he was killed, along with seven of his companions in the attack. The source denied reports that a martyrdom car bomb had struck the puppet official’s motorcade.

Baghdad.

Resistance attacks joint US-Iraqi puppet checkpoint in al-‘Amiriyah late Thursday afternoon. Two US troops reported killed.

In a bulletin posted at 6:14pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces attacked a joint US-Iraqi puppet check point on the road to Saddam International Airport in the western Baghdad district of al-‘Amiriyah.

Witnesses in al-‘Amiriyah said that Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons, including RPG7 rocket-propelled grenades and pipe rockets, attacked the checkpoint, disabling one US armored vehicle and destroying a pickup belonging to the Iraqi puppet forces. Two US troops were killed and three more American soldiers wounded. Five Iraqi puppet troops were also killed and three more of them wounded.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that many of the Iraqi puppet forces fled to the safety of houses in the neighborhood as soon as the Resistance fighters attacked the checkpoint.

Four US troops reported killed in bombing in al-Bu Hishmah village late Thursday morning.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US armored column on the main road in the village of al-Bu Hishamah, north of Baghdad at 11am Thursday morning local time.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of the village as saying that the bomb, which was planted in the middle of an unpaved farm road, blew up as a column of four armored vehicles and three Humvees passed over it. The blast totally destroyed one of the armored vehicles, killing four US troops and wounding two more.

Resistance bombards US-Iraqi base in al-A‘zamiyah Thursday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces fired eight mortar rounds into the joint US-Iraqi puppet base in the west of Baghdad’s al-A‘zamiyah district at 9:30am local time Thursday morning.

Residents of al-A‘zamiyah told Mafkarat al-Islam that violent explosions shook the facility as a result of the bombardment, which sent plumes of smoke rising into the sky.

Pentagon admits US holding 12,000 to 17,000 prisoners in occupied Iraq.

The official spokesman for the American Defense Department said on Thursday that the number of Iraqi prisoners being held by US forces has reached between 12,000 and 17,000.

Agence France Presse (AFP), as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Pentagon spokesman Larry DiRita said that the number rises at times to between 12,000 to 16,000 or 17,000 prisoners. DiRita indicated that he did not know how many of those were behind bars for general offenses such as car theft or robbery, how many were actually involved with the Resistance, and how many were in the wrong place at the wrong time. DiRita said it would take time to sort them out.

The Pentagon spokesman said that the number of prisoners fluctuates a great deal. “Sometimes a large number are released,” he said.

US military admits: 30 percent of American troops returning from Iraq develop mental problems.

The American Associated Press (AP) reported Thursday that a survey of US soldiers coming back from the occupation of Iraq found that 30 percent of them developed mental health problems three to four months after their return.

The findings announced by the US Army Surgeon General on Thursday said that the problems developed by returned American soldiers included anxiety, depression, nightmares, anger and an inability to concentrate, the AP, as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam, reported. A smaller group suffers from more severe cases. They are diagnosed as having post-traumatic stress disorder.

The AP quoted Colonel Elspeth Ritchie, a military psychiatrist on the staff of Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley, as saying that only 3 percent to 5 percent of the soldiers are diagnosed as having a significant mental health problem immediately after leaving the war zone. A 2004 survey found that 13 percent of American troops in occupied Iraq suffered from significant mental health problems.

Diyala Province.
Ba‘qubah.

Resistance martyrdom car bomber blasts US column Thursday evening.

In a dispatch posted at 6:55pm Mecca time Thursday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighter drove an explosives-laden car into a US military column at the southern entrance to the city of Shahraban, north of Ba‘qubah.

Residents of Shahraban told Mafkarat al-Islam that an Iraqi Resistance fighter in a booby-trapped car surprised a column of eight US Humvees when he drove straight into the middle of the vehicles and blew up. The correspondent reported that the blast destroyed one Humvee and disabled a second, killing or wounding eight American troops.

Three puppet troops killed in Resistance attack on checkpoint.

Iraqi Resistance fighters attacked a checkpoint manned by Iraqi puppet troops in Ba‘qubah on Thursday, killing three puppet troops and wounding four more. A source in Ba‘qubah General Hospital told Quds Press that the four wounded men were in serious condition, according to a dispatch posted at 10:40am GMT Thursday.

Khan Bani Sa‘d.

A detachment of Iraqi Resistance forces, armed with mortars and light and medium weapons, attacked an Iraqi puppet force check point near the town of Khan Bani Sa‘d on the road south of Ba‘qubah on the way to Baghdad before noon on Thursday. Quds Press reported that another Resistance detachment assaulted a second puppet checkpoint about one kilometer away from the first. The two-pronged attack left three Iraqi puppet troops dead and six more wounded.

Babil Province.
Al-Latifiyah.

Double car bombing leaves nine Americans reported dead late Thursday morning.

Two Iraqi Resistance martyrdom fighters drove two explosives-packed cars into a US column on al-Atibba’ Street in the middle of al-Latifiyah, south of Baghdad, at 11:30am local time Thursday morning.

Eye witnesses told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that one Iraqi martyrdom fighter driving a car bomb managed to surprise the American troops, detonating his car at the front of the US column, destroying one Humvee and setting a second on fire.

As the Americans busied themselves with extracting the dead and wounded and putting out the fire in one of their vehicles started by the car bomb blast, a second Resistance martyrdom fighter drove another explosives-packed car into the security barriers that the Americans had erected around the bomb site and blew up near the US troops, disabling another American armored vehicle.

The two explosions killed about nine US troops and wounded 10 more, according to witnesses quoted by Mafkarat al-Islam.

Quds Press, in a dispatch posted at 6:57am GMT, reported a source in the Iraqi puppet police confirming the account of the double car bomb attack on the US column. The Iraqi puppet police source claimed, however, that only three American troops were killed and seven more wounded.

Salah ad-Din Province.
Bayji.

Resistance ambushes US supply convoy south of Bayji.

In a dispatch posted at 2:20pm Mecca time Thursday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters had attacked a convoy of trucks hauling provisions and equipment for US forces south of Bayji.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the city of Tikrit reported that Resistance fighters attacked the convoy on the main road near the town of al-‘Awjah, south of Bayji. Residents of al-‘Awjah told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons, including RPG7 rocket-propelled grenades and BKC machine guns, attacked the convoy, setting three trucks on fire and killing four collaborator truck drivers and wounding two more.

Iraqi Resistance sharpshooter kills two US troops in Bayji early Thursday.

In a dispatch posted at 10:45am Mecca time Thursday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance marksman shot and killed two US soldiers in the al-Muhandisin neighborhood in the middle of Bayji, north of Baghdad.

The local Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported residents of al-Muhandisin as saying that the two American soldiers were on a foot patrol in their neighborhood, searching for bombs that they thought had been planted by the side of the main road in the middle of al-Muhandisin. They found no bombs but the Resistance sharp shooter opened fire and killed two of them.

Samarra’.

Resistance mounts fierce rocket barrage on US base late Thursday afternoon.

Iraqi Resistance forces mounted a violent rocket attack on US occupation forces in the al-Qadisiyah neighborhood in the west of Samarra’ at about 6:30pm local time Thursday evening.

The Samarra’ correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of al-Qadisiyah as saying that Resistance forces fired four medium-range Grad missiles into the US headquarters. The rockets struck the middle of the camp setting off fierce explosions that set fires burning and sent smoke billowing into the sky over the US-occupied facility.

US Medevac helicopters were seen landing inside the base after the attack.

Four US troops reported killed in roadside bombing north of Samarra’ early Thursday.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a column of US troops north of Samarra’ at 9am local time Thursday morning.

Residents of the city told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that a bomb that was planted by the side of the road leading north to the city of Tikrit blew up by a passing US patrol, destroying one Humvee and killing the four US soldiers who were aboard it.

Ninwa Province.
Mosul.

US occupation forces and their Iraqi stooges tightened their security noose on the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, closing four of the five bridges in the city.

Witnesses told Quds Press that US and stooge forces had begun a massive and unprecedented deployment in the city, on a scale not seen since the US invasion in spring 2003.

The Americans and the Iraqi puppet forces backed up by US military vehicles set up numerous checkpoints at the ends of bridges and major roads in the city, essentially making it impossible for people on one side of the city to get to the other side. The situation forced Iraqi puppet police to transport women in their police cars from one side of the city to the other just to enable them to get home.

Quds Press learned that the intense security followed a visit by the puppet so-called “Iraqi interior minister” Bayan Jabr to the city several days ago. According to highly-placed sources in Ninwa Province, Quds Press said that Jabr held meetings with local puppet security officials in the city and ordered them to impose a new security plan aimed at ridding Mosul of Resistance fighters.

Jabr reportedly ordered additional puppet forces, including the notorious “Wolf Brigade” into the city to take part in the new crackdown. The Wolf Brigade of the puppet so-called “interior forces” is made up of members of the Shi‘i chauvinist Badr Brigade militia that invaded Iraq along with US forces in spring 2003.

Dhi Qar Province.
An-Nasiriyah.

Four Italian occupation troops wounded in roadside bombing early Thursday.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint Italian-Iraqi puppet patrol in the ash-Shatrah area in the middle of an-Nasiriyah at about 8am Thursday morning.

Residents of ash-Shatrah told the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city that a bomb planted under a pile of rubbish by the side of a farm road in the north of the area blew up when the joint patrol of two Italian armored vehicles and four vehicles belonging to the Iraqi puppet forces blew up. The blast destroyed one Iraqi vehicle and disabled an Italian armored vehicle, killing three Iraqi puppet troops and wounding two more in addition to wounding four Italian occupation soldiers.

Al-Basrah Province.
Umm Qasr.

Kuwait gunboats open fire on buildings near Umm Qasr port noon Wednesday, as Kuwait reportedly reinforces new border inside Iraq. Washington offers to “help” improve relations between the two satellite regimes.

In a dispatch posted at 6:52pm Mecca time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported witnesses as saying that Kuwaiti gunboats in the Gulf had opened fire on Iraqi houses in Umm Qasr at noon on Wednesday.

The witnesses told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the gunboats opened fire intensely on the area near the Umm Qasr port on the Iraq-Kuwait border. A female port employee said that evacuating the people from the area was particularly difficult since the Kuwaiti gunboats were firing at them from close range.

Meanwhile, al-Jazeera satellite TV reported early Thursday that the Kuwaiti regime had deployed anti-riot troops on the border with Iraq after several days of demonstrations by Iraqis protesting Kuwaiti border troops moving boundary markers 2km inside Iraqi territory. Clashes have broken out in recent days and one Iraqi demonstrator reportedly opened fire with an automatic weapon at the checkpoint that the Kuwaiti forces had set up on Iraqi soil.

According to al-Jazeera satellite TV as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam, the puppet regime in Baghdad has been in contact with the American-dominated regime in Kuwait over the border issue, the puppet “governor” of al-Basrah Muhammad Misbah met with the Kuwaiti Deputy Interior Minister and they agreed to stop building the checkpoint until a final agreement between the two regimes can be reached.

Mafkarat al-Islam reported from al-Basrah that in their emergency meeting the Iraqi puppet governor and the Kuwaiti deputy minister reached a mutual agreement that operations to draw the border would be halted, according to the account of the meeting given by the Iraqi puppet ‘governor,” who said that the aim was to calm the rapidly escalating tension on the border.

Al-Jazeera reported that the puppet “governor” of al-Basrah asked the Kuwaiti side not to escalate the situation. Nevertheless, the Kuwaiti Minister of the Interior Nawaf al-Ahmad as-Sabah ordered that the construction of an advanced security system for the border be speeded up.

Kuwaiti officials rejected the protests of Iraqi demonstrators at Umm Qasr. The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Shaykh Muhammad as-Sabah announced that the border fences were being set up on Kuwaiti soil in accordance with UN Resolution 833 that redrew the border between Iraq and Kuwait to give Kuwait more territory at Iraq’s expense following the 30-Nation Aggression against Iraq in 1990-1991. Playing to official western audiences, the Kuwaiti Minister added further that the new border would facilitate the struggle against the “infiltration of terrorists.”

Later on Thursday, in a press conference in occupied Baghdad, puppet so-called “Iraqi foreign minister” Hushyar Zibari stressed that Iraq wishes to solve the problem with Kuwait peacefully.

At the same news conference, the American Ambassador to the puppet regime, renowned neo-Conservative Afghan-American Zalmay Khalil Zad, told the press that Washington is ready to help the puppet regime in Baghdad and the US-dominated regime in Kuwait to improve their relations.

US forces occupy Iraq with some 150,000 men. According to a Reuters dispatch of 19 July 2005, there are 30,000 US troops in Kuwait along with another 12,000 American non-military personnel. The US has had a major military presence in Kuwait since American troops restored the Al Sabah monarchy to the principality in 1991.
