Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 7 August 2005
By: Muhammad Abu Nasr on: 08.08.2005 [00:44 ] (203 reads)

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice.

Sunday, 7 August 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.

Al-Hadithah.

Fierce fighting continues. Resistance confirms 20 US troops dead or wounded, large quantities of American weapons seized. Resistance re-takes lost ground in grueling fighting following. Savage US bomb raids hit residential areas.

The offensive that the US command dubbed “Quick Strike” on al-Hadithah dragged into its third day Sunday morning with US bombardments of the Radio and Television building, other government establishments and several schools in the eastern part of the city, Quds Press quoted witnesses as reporting.

In a dispatch posted at 11:45am Mecca time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that fierce battles were underway at that time between US occupation troops and Iraqi Resistance fighters in the western Iraqi city.

Witnesses told the local Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that the fighting was centered on the al-‘Askari neighborhood in the eastern part of the city where US fighter planes carried out extremely fierce bombing.

Quds Press reported witnesses as saying that a number of residential houses were flattened in the US air raids, burying their inhabitants under the rubble. Medical sources told the news agency that the Americans were blasting everything that moved in the city, making it very difficult for ambulance services to reach victims in the places hit by American bombs and rockets.

Sources in the Iraqi Resistance confirmed to Mafkarat al-Islam that they had killed or wounded more than 20 US soldiers and had seized a large number of American weapons.

Quds Press quoted its sources in al-Hadithah as saying that four American vehicles were destroyed in the fighting and that US forces failed to break through the defenses of the Resistance fighters, causing the Americans to call in air strikes on positions they believed to be occupied by the Resistance.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent ミ who is in the heart of the embattled city ミ reported that at dawn US forces were able to take control of the Radio and Television building in al-Hadithah after an hour-long battle with the Iraqi Resistance. The Americans were able to take the building, however, only after sending in aircraft to bomb concentrations of Resistance fighters from the air. Earlier American ground assaults on the building had been thrown back by the Resistance defenders.

Quds Press reported that the Americans had mounted intensive air raids on numerous areas and towns where the Resistance is putting up a stiff fight against the Marines. Black smoke rose over many locations on the outskirts of al-Hadithah and in the city itself following heavy American air assaults. No news media have been permitted access to the city by the US force, who say that the situation is “too dangerous.” The Quds Press correspondent has therefore been forced to remain outside the city receiving reports from witnesses on the inside. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent was already in the city before the Americans launched their offensive.

Resistance shoots down US Black Hawk over al-‘Askari neighborhood . . .

In a dispatch posted at 5:05pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Hadithah reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters had shot down a US Black Hawk helicopter over the al-‘Askari neighborhood in the east of the city.

The correspondent reported a source in the Iraqi puppet army, which is helping the Americans in their offensive against al-Hadithah, as saying that the Resistance fired some type of surface-to-air rocket that struck the helicopter while it was on a mission firing rockets at strongholds of Resistance fighters in the al-‘Askari neighborhood.

The same source said that the Resistance rocket struck the helicopter directly, causing it to crash instantly. The fate of the two-man crew was unknown at the time of writing, but they were believed to have been killed because the helicopter blew up in the air before hitting the ground.

Resistance retakes Radio and TV building after savage battle with US Marines . . .

In a bulletin posted at 6:28pm Mecca time Sunday evening, the al-Hadithah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short time before, Iraqi Resistance forces had retaken the al-Hadithah Radio and Television building after grueling battle that lasted for nearly two hours.

The correspondent, located in the heart of al-Hadithah, reported that the Resistance had been able to recapture the building after its seizure early in the day by US Marines enjoying devastating air cover.

The Resistance mounted an organized counterattack at about 4pm local time Sunday afternoon and battled the Marines until 6pm.

A source in the First Army of Muhammad Resistance organization told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Americans left behind 19 dead US troops, adding that six Iraqi Resistance fighters were martyred in the course of the fighting. Three of those fighters were from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria, while the other three martyrs were Iraqi fighters.

Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the correspondent was able to take photographs of the Resistance fighters after they had retaken the Radio and TV building, but difficulties in transmission out of the city, which has been blockaded by the Americans for three days, prevented those photos reaching the editors in Baghdad. US forces have attempted to shut down all communication out of the city.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet force foot patrol in the ash-Shuhada’ neighborhood of south al-Fallujah at 12 noon local time Sunday morning.

Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ strongly denounces US ‘genocidal’ campaign in al-Hadithah.

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ Scholars, the highest Sunni Muslim religious authority in occupied Iraq, issued a statement Sunday in which it denounced the US offensive on al-Hadithah and the surrounding area and said it was disturbed over the silence of religious authorities, civil societies, and human rights organizations in the world over the bloody offensive.

The Board noted that, “the occupation and those supporting them continue to wallow in the our pure blood, violating the sanctity of our noble land. The destruction of whole cities over the heads of their inhabitants has become routine for them, just another one of the traits of them and the cowards who support them. The cries of the widows, the screams of the children, and the appeals for help from the elders are no more than appetizers that whet their voracious appetite for blood, killing, refined torture, and destruction. Such perfidious people and the traitors working beside them are incapable of putting a limit on their crimes for the pleasure they take in the murder of others.”

The strongly-worded statement went on to say that the US occupation forces “determined to attack the heroic city of al-Hadithah and the surrounding tows of al-Haqlaniyah, Bani Dahir, and the ash-Shaykh Hadid area. The patriots there, who refused to let their country be devoured by hyenas, are being blasted in the storms of hatred unleashed by the invaders and their stooges.”

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ rejected and denounced what is taking place in al-Hadithah and its environs and said it was “disturbed by the silence of religious authorities, civil institutions, and human rights organizations around the world in the face of the genocide being committed by the hand of the occupation and with the blessings of the current ‘government’ and those taking part in it.”

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ stressed that it was “fully confident that Right will prevail, that the occupation will be driven out, and that the peoples seeking to win back their sovereignty and their right to live on their land will remain, for the morrow that we have been awaiting is nigh.”

US military admit three US troops killed in Baghdad and northern Iraq.

The US military admitted on Sunday that three of its troops had been killed in various attacks in Baghdad and the north, Quds Press reported in a dispatch posted at 6:07 GMT Sunday.

Pro-American Kurdish leader rejects Arab and Islamic identity of Iraq continuing drive for partition.

Kurdish chauvinist leader Mas‘ud al-Barzani announced his refusal to include words about the the Islamic and Arab character of Iraq in the new “constitution” that is being drawn up under the auspices of the US occupation authorities.

At the same time al-Barzani also said that there could be no bargaining over the inclusion of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in the Kurdish mini-state that is to achieve quasi-independent status in accordance with the new “constitution.” The establishment of three states in present-day Iraq is an idea long cherished by advocates of the partition of Iraq in strategic “think tanks” in Washington and Tel Aviv.

Al-Barzani, currently the “president” of the Kurdish region under the US occupation authorities, told the Kurdish separatist “parliament” that he would insist on a “federative” arrangement, and on the Kurdish region retaining its own Peshmergah militias. Al-Barzani was speaking in the course of discussions with other Iraqi puppet leaders working to frame the “constitution.”

Agence France Presse (AFP) as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam reported that al-Barzani addressed an emergency session of the Kurdish “parliament” saying, “we will never accept an Islamic identity for Iraq.” Al-Barzani also rejected a text calling Iraq an Arab state, saying “make Arab Iraq a part of the Arab Nation, but that does not include us.”

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded on the road leading to Kirkuk in the al-Wahdah neighborhood in the southern part of Mosul at 12 noon local time Sunday morning.

The Mosul correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported residents of al-Wahdah who witnessed the bombing as saying that the explosives-laden car was parked by the side of the road to Kirkuk. It blew up when a US armored column passed by, setting one armored vehicle on fire and killing three US troops and wounding two more.

After the explosion, American troops surrounded the area and adjacent neighborhoods. Swarms of US fighter planes flew into the skies over the area in an effort to provide air cover for the US troops on the ground as they hauled away the wrecked vehicle and evacuated the bodies of the dead and the wounded.

Maysan Province.

Al-‘Amarah.

British occupation troops launch campaign of mass arrests in al-‘Amarah Sunday morning, targeting Sunni citizens.

British occupation forces launched a campaign of mass raids targeting Sunni districts of the city of al-‘Amarah, 380km south of Baghdad, on Sunday morning.

The al-‘Amarah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a force of more than 500 British troops stormed the al-Majar and al-Majar al-Kabir districts of the city, raiding and searching homes of Sunni citizens.

The correspondent reported that the British occupation troops rounded up and arrested a large number of Sunni residents in their raids. Among those arrested were university professors and public and private sector employees.

Sources in the Iraqi puppet army said that the reason for the raids and roundups was that the Sunni community supposedly gave refuge to Resistance fighters. The puppet soldier said that now the Sunnis as a whole were “paying the price” for supporting the Resistance fighters, whom he called “terrorists.”

Al-Muthanna Province.

As-Samawah.

Curfew declared in as-Samawah after police attack demonstrators calling for ouster of puppet governor.

The people of as-Samawah, 350km south of Baghdad, came out in a large demonstration on Sunday to protest against the puppet governor over the deterioration of city services. The demonstrators demanded that the puppet governor be dismissed from his post.

Witnesses told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that the protesters rallied in front of the puppet government office building. They set fire to the square in front of the building causing the puppet police to open fire on the demonstrators.

Clashes erupted between the demonstrators and the puppet police that witnesses said left one civilian dead and 53 others injured. Most of those injured were reportedly puppet policemen.

The puppet police, using loud speakers, declared a curfew in as-Samawah.

The intensity of the demonstration in a city known for widespread loyalty to the pro-American Shi‘i religious authorities reflects the extreme discontent throughout the Iraqi population over the American occupation and the ruin of the country that the occupation has brought about.
