Sunday, 14 August 2005.

Al-Anbar Province.

Ar-Ramadi.

Resistance car bomb blasts US patrol Sunday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 3:47pm Mecca time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, an explosives-packed car had exploded by a patrol of several US Humvees on the main road in the az-Zuyut area of central ar-Ramadi.

Residents of az-Zuyut told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that an explosives-laden Kia sedan that was parked by the side of the main street blew up as a US patrol was passing by.

The explosion destroyed one US armored vehicle and disabled a second, killing four American soldiers and wounding another three US troops.

Quds Press reported that the bombing took place near the vegetable oil plant in ar-Ramadi, destroyed one Humvee. Quds Press said that witnesses said that one American soldier was killed in the attack and three more wounded. Afterwards, US forces encircled the area as helicopters flew in to scan the area looking for the attackers.

US Marine spokesman discloses request to double US forces in al-Anbar Province to try to regain control there after Resistance seizes “whole cities.”

Captain Jeffrey Pool, a US Marine spokesman in al-Anbar Province told a press conference in the ar-Ramadi Governorate building, which is now being used as the American headquarters in the province, that the American operational commander in al-Anbar had requested the US headquarters in Baghdad to send additional Marine reinforcements as well as more Iraqi puppet troops to al-Anbar in order to try to take control of the situation in the province in general and in ar-Ramadi in particular.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in ar-Ramadi reported a source in the Iraqi puppet army who attended the press conference as saying that US Marine units operating in al-Anbar feel that they need to double their current number if they want to take full control of all the cities in the province, particularly after losing many troops in the recent offensives against al-Qa’im and al-Hadithah.

The source said that Captain Jeffrey Pool said emphasized the importance of negotiations with the people of al-Anbar Province to try to get them to enlist in the Iraqi puppet army in return for attractive salaries and new weapons which would help them resist what he called “insurgents” ミ meaning the Iraqi Resistance forces.

Pool said, however, that the effort to get local people to join the puppet army had not been met with enthusiasm during the meeting that preceded the press conference, because the people of the cities of al-Anbar, he said, ‘believe in absolute loyalty’ to the Iraqi Resistance forces, according to the source in the Iraqi puppet forces, who expressed his disappointment over that sentiment.

Pool was optimistic, however, that both the US command in Baghdad and the Iraqi puppet regime would sent military reinforcements to al-Anbar Province in order to gain control of the situation, noting that “whole cities had fallen to the ‘insurgents’” in that province.

Asked about the number of troops and amount of equipment that were being sent to beef up the Americans in al-Anbar, the Iraqi source said that it would “have to be enough reinforcements to finally break them i.e., the Resistance.”

The source in the Iraqi puppet military asked that his name not be published claiming that he was afraid that the Resistance would be monitoring him or members of his family in Baghdad.

Al-Fallujah.

Three US troops reported killed in farm road bombing in as-Saqlawiyah late Sunday afternoon.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded in the path of a joint US-Iraqi puppet force patrol on the main farm road in the as-Saqlawiyah area north of al-Fallujah (50km west of Baghdad) at 6pm local time Sunday afternoon.

Farmers and owners of groves in the as-Saqlawiyah area who witnessed the attack told Mafkarat al-Islam that a bomb that was planted by the side of the road blew up as a joint foot patrol of American and Iraqi puppet forces, accompanied by US Humvees, was passing by.

The witnesses said that the blast killed three US troops and one Iraqi puppet soldier and wounded two more American troops.

Four US troops reported killed in roadside bombing Sunday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 11:30am Mecca time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the middle of al-Fallujah.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent on the scene of the explosion near the municipal courthouse in the al-Jumhuriyah neighborhood in the city, said that a high-explosive Resistance bomb that was planted by the side of the road near the courthouse exploded by a US Humvee, destroying the vehicle and killing four US troops and wounding a fifth, who was in agony on the ground as a result of the severity of his wounds.

US forces immediately closed off the area and launched searches of nearby houses and shops which were still underway at the time of reporting. Meanwhile other Americans evacuated the bodies of the four dead soldiers and the wounded man to their base in the agricultural area east of al-Fallujah.

Ar-Rutbah.

Resistance bombing in ar-Rutbah kills at least one US soldier.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by US troops to the east of the town of ar-Rutbah in western Iraq near the Jordanian border on Sunday. The Syrian News Agency SANA reported that the US military admitted that the blast left one American soldier dead and three others wounded.

Baghdad.

Two US troops reported killed in roadside bombing in at-Taji Sunday morning.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a joint US-Iraqi puppet army column on the highway south of at-Taji (which lies some 25km north of Baghdad) at 9am local time Sunday morning.

Witnesses told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in at-Taji that a bomb that was planted by the side of the main road in the city blew up as a joint patrol of US and Iraqi puppet forces passed by. The explosion destroyed one US Humvee, killing two American soldiers and wounding two more.

Occupation troops arrest Iraqi journalist under new order to pick up newsmen opposed to the occupation or the US-installed “government.”

In accordance with the recent order by the puppet “Iraqi interior minister” Baqir Jabr Sulagh, that Iraqi journalists who work in newspapers or news agencies opposed to the US occupation and who expose the practices of the occupation forces and their stooges be arrested, American troops backed up by members of the puppet police on Saturday night raided the Baghdad home of journalist Muhammad ‘Abd al-Karim al-Jabburi, the editor of the newspaper Dar as-Salam al-Islamiyah, the official organ of the “Islamic Party in Iraq.” The Americans seized numerous items from his home and arrested al-Jabburi and took him away to an unknown destination.

The leader of the “Islamic Party in Iraq,” an offshoot of the Iraqi Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan al-Muslimin) organization, accepted a post in the first puppet government installed by US invasion forces after the occupation of Baghdad in April 2003. Since then, the party has become more critical of the US occupation but at the same time has been content to function as a Sunni component in the sectarian political party system that the Americans have been endeavoring to install in the country.

Mafkarat al-Islam quoted a spokesman for the “Islamic Party” as saying that Muhammad ‘Abd al-Karim al-Jabburi is a supporter of the Iraqi cause and an opponent of the occupation and that he was arrested and taken to an unknown destination. The “Islamic Party” issued a statement in Baghdad placing total responsibility for al-Jabburi’s safety on the American occupation forces and the Iraqi puppet police and demanded his immediate release.

Baqir Jabr Sulagh, the “Iraqi interior minister” in the US-run government is also a prominent leader in the Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigade militia that invaded Iraq together with US forces in spring 2003 and has since gained the reputation of being the “right hand” of the occupation. On Monday, 8 August 2005 he issued a ministerial order to the puppet police commanding them to arrest what he termed “journalists who incite terrorism” who work for news agencies or newspapers opposed to the occupation forces or the Iraqi puppet government. In the language used by the occupation and the puppet regime, Resistance or jihad against the foreign occupation and its stooges is called “terrorism.”

(See: “Puppet regime’s ‘Interior Minister’ issues order to shut down all media opposed to US occupation and to arrest employees of such organizations that refer to ‘Resistance’ or ‘Jihad.’” in the Iraqi Resistance Report for Monday, 8 August 2005.)

Director General of Iraqi Central Bank abducted early Sunday.

A source in the puppet “Iraqi interior ministry” announced that “unknown armed men” had abducted the Director General of the Iraqi Central Bank had from his home in Baghdad early Sunday.

The Syrian News Agency SANA reported the source as saying that Husam Kazim Juwayd, Director General of the Iraqi Central Bank was kidnapped from his home in eastern Baghdad’s al-Mustansiriyah neighborhood at gunpoint.

Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ blasts calls for “federalism.”

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’Scholars, the highest religious authority for Sunni Muslims in occupied Iraq, emphatically rejected the idea of splitting up Iraq and setting up regions on the basis of sectarian or ethnic affiliation.

Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Board, in a statement issued Saturday, said that such plans were attempts to “exploit the current situation to attain the private aims of specific political forces that have distanced themselves from the interests of the Iraqi people as a whole.”

The Board said that the right to decide on the matter of federalism rested entirely with the Iraqi people of every ethnic and religious background. It emphasized that the opinion of the people must be taken into account and this could only be done in normal conditions, relieved of the influence of an occupation and the pressures that come from the total lack of security, the ruin of the economy and lack of public freedom in the country.

The Sunni Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ made known its rejection of federation along sectarian lines two days after ‘Abd al-‘Azia al-Hakim, the Chairman of the Shi‘i sectarian Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (whose armed wing, the Badr Brigades took part in the US invasion of Iraq in 2003) called for the establishment of a separate Shi‘i region in the south and center of Iraq to be linked in a very loose federal arrangement with two other parts of the country ミ one a Sunni Arab reservation and the other Kurdish.

US American soldier killed Saturday in west Baghdad.

The US military admitted on Sunday that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded in western Baghdad on Saturday, killing one US soldier and wounding a second, the Syrian News Agency SANA reported.

Americans find body of US soldier shot to death in Baghdad Friday.

The Syrian News Agency SANA said that the American occupation forces had reported finding the body of another American soldier who had been shot to death in Baghdad on Friday. The Americans said that no further details on that death would be available until the investigation into the incident was completed.

Kuwait picks up US$133 million tab for fuel used by US military in Kuwait and Iraq.

The government of Kuwait has paid US$133 million to cover the cost of fuel used by the US military in Kuwait and Iraq, due for the period up to the end of July 2005.

The Kuwait correspondent of the Saudi newspaper ar-Riyad, Sa‘d al-‘Ajami, reported in a story published on Sunday that an interdepartmental dispute had arisen over which Kuwaiti ministry was responsible for making the payment ミ the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense or the Kuwaiti Ministry of Finance. The two sides finally agreed on a solution of their differences.

The Kuwaiti government had previously committed itself in its security agreement with the United States to pay the cost of all fuel used by US forces in Kuwait. The development of the operations of US forces and their invasion of Iraq, however, provoked a dispute between different Kuwaiti government departments over which of them was actually supposed to dole out the funds to the Americans, and more generally, whether the security agreement with Washington really meant that Kuwait was required to pick up the tab for fuel used by US forces in Iraq.

Correspondent al-‘Ajami of ar-Riyad wrote that a dispute had arisen earlier between the US and Kuwait when the American Defense Department demanded that the government of Kuwait pay some US$400 million to cover the cost of fuel used by US aircraft operating in Iraq. Kuwait balked at that Pentagon demand but after discussions and communication between the two sides, Kuwait finally agreed that its Ministry of Energy would pay the amount.

Babil Province.

Al-Musayyib.

Puppet regime arrests two religious scholars in Babil Province.

Iraqi puppet police arrested Shaykh Ahmad Jifan Khudayr, a member of the Middle Euphrates Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ scholars and the Imam of a mosque in al-Musayyib late Saturday night and led him away to an unknown destination, Mafkarat al-Islam reported Sunday.

At about the same time and in the same way, puppet forces arrested and took away Shaykh Khudayr Mut‘ib al-Furati, also a member of the Middle Euphrates Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ scholars and the Imam of the ar-Rahman Mosque in Ajbalah.

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ issued a statement holding the puppet “Iraqi interior ministry completely responsible for the lives of the two religious scholars and calling on it to release them immediately.

Mafkarat al-Islam quoted a source in the puppet “Iraqi interior ministry” as saying that the ministerial decree also provided for the arrest of religious leaders who “incite fighting the foreign forces in Iraq and the Iraqi security personnel in their Friday sermons and after the five daily prayers in mosques.”

Diyala Province.

Salman Bak.

Two US troops reported killed in late Sunday afternoon bombing.

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the Salman Bak area, about 30km southeast of Baghdad at 6:30pm local time Sunday afternoon.

Residents of Salman Bak told the al-Mada’in correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that a bomb that had been planted by the side of the road leading towards al-Mada’in blew up as a patrol of five Humvees passed by.

The explosion set one of the Humvees on fire, killing two US troops and wounding three more.

Al-Miqdadiyah.

Resistance attacks puppet police patrol in al-Miqdadiyah.

Iraqi Resistance fighters attacked an Iraqi puppet police car on patrol that was heading towards their place of work in the puppet police station on the edge of al-Kut on Sunday morning, destroying the car. A source in the joint coordination office that works with the US occupation forces in al-Miqdadiyah told Quds Press that the attack left one officer in the puppet police dead and two others wounded.

Quds Press reported that a source in the city security service said that in a separate incident, Resistance forces set the puppet police car of an officer in the puppet police fore on fire

Wasit Province.

As-Suwayrah.

Pro-American Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades take over Sunni mosque pressing drive to stir sectarian divisions in Iraq.

Members of the collaborationist Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades militia together with Iraqi puppet police seized a Sunni mosque in the city of as-Suwayrah south of Baghdad. A force of some 10 puppet police and Badr Brigade gunmen stormed the mosque, and arrested the gate keeper and custodian of the mosque late on Friday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported Sunday.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in as-Suwayrah wrote that the al-Bukhari Mosque that was built and paid for by the Sunni population in 1983, was seized by the Badr Brigade gunmen at gunpoint with the help of the puppet police.

Then on Saturday, Badr Brigade gunmen entered the mosque again and put up a big poster of pro-American Shi‘i religious authority ‘Ali as-Sistani on the front of the building. The Shi‘i sectarian gunmen declared that the mosque was now a Husayniyah (Shi‘i place of worship) and renamed it the Husayniyah of Ahl al-Bayt al-Athar.

The correspondent reported Sunni residents of the city as saying that the Mosque of al-Bukhari is the second Sunni place of worship that Shi‘i sectarians have seized for themselves since the US occupation of the country in spring 2003. The first was the Mosque of Hittin that Badr Brigades seized control of some months ago. Several days after that, the Resistance organization Base Qa‘idah of the Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers attacked the mosque, and destroyed the building, killing several members of the Badr Brigades inside.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent supplied a picture of the poster with the face of Shi‘i cleric ‘Ali as-Sistani posted on the fa溝de of the occupied mosque. The poster reads “United Iraqi Alliance”, the political party that as-Sistani supports and which is led by ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Hakim the chairman of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, whose armed wing is the Badr Brigade.

At-Ta’mim Province.

Tuz Khurmatu.

Three US troops reported killed in car bombing early Sunday.

An Iraqi Resistance car bomb exploded by a US armored column on the main road in Tuz Khurmatu, north of Baghdad, at 8am local time Sunday morning.

Witnesses told the Kirkuk correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that a car packed with explosives and parked by the side of the main road near tourist restaurants in Tuz Khurmatu blew up as a column of five US armored vehicles and three Humvees passed by.

The witnesses reported that the blast totally destroyed one of the armored vehicles, killing three American soldiers and wounding two more US troops.

US admits three Americans killed in Friday bombing.

The US military admitted that an Iraqi Resistance bomb had exploded by a US patrol in Tuz Khurmatu on Friday. The Syrian News Agency SANA reported the American statement as saying that three US troops were killed in the blast and one more wounded.

Ninwa Province.

Mosul.

Resistance fighters ambush US mercenary vehicle early Sunday.

Iraqi Resistance forces attacked a column of armor-plated cars of the type used by foreign mercenaries working for “security companies” under contract with the US military. The attack took place on the main road leading to the American al-Ghazlani base in the middle of Mosul in northern Iraq at 7am local time Sunday morning.

A source in the local traffic police who witnessed the attack told the Mosul correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam that about eight Resistance fighters armed with light weapons and pipe rockets attacked the column of special security company cars.

The source said that the Resistance fighters set two of the armored cars ablaze, killing three foreigners and wounding five more. The Resistance fighters were able to leave the scene and there were no reports of Resistance casualties in the engagement.

Tall ‘Afar.

Bodies of 19 Badr Brigade gunmen found executed.

Iraqi puppet police discovered the bodies of 19 Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigade gunmen who had been shot to death in the area of Tall ‘Afar, west of Mosul in northern Iraq.

A source in Tall ‘Afar General Hospital told the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the city that the 19 had been shot to death, execution style, and their bodies found near a former military barracks in Tall ‘Afar. The source noted that the 19 were members of the Badr Brigade that uses the former facilities of the Army of the Republic of Iraq as their headquarters east of the city.

The Badr Bridgade is the armed wing of the Shi‘i chauvinist Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI). The Brigades together with US troops invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003 and have since then become the backbone of the puppet police and security forces in most of the country.

A source in the Iraqi puppet army confirmed to the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent that the 19 were Badr Brigade members, adding that they were abducted several days ago from the middle of Tall ‘Afar along with a number of puppet army men whose bodies were found Saturday in another location in the city.

The correspondent posted a photograph of the enshrouded bodies before they were taken into the morgue in Tall ‘Afar General Hospital. The picture can be seen at: http://www.islammemo.cc/news/one_news.asp?IDNews=77005.

Al-Basrah Province.

Umm Qasr.

Agence France Presse (AFP) as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam reported that it had obtained a video tape in which a previously unknown Islamic group threatened to attack Kuwaiti military targets on the border between Kuwait and Iraq.

A masked man appeared on the tape reading a communiqu “to whom it may concern in Kuwait.” The message said in part: “the Iraqi-Kuwaiti borders were drawn by the United nations” and said that they were “illegitmate” and a “time bomb” that might eventually explode.

The communiqu called on Kuwaitis to “return to your senses and return to the borders that you used to have previously.” It threatened to strike Kuwaiti military forces and border posts and Kuwaiti subjects and companies in Iraq.

On the video tape, the masked man reading the communiqu was flanked on both sides by masked men and over their heads in the background hung a sign on which was written the name of their organization: “The Islamic Jihad Movement.”

On 25 July hundreds of angry Iraqi demonstrators ripped up border markers that Kuwaiti authorities had planted on the 200km Iraqi Kuwaiti border, saying that the new borderline as drawn by the Kuwaitis lay inside Iraqi territory. (See “Demonstrations continue as Kuwait persists in land-grab near Umm Qasr,” in Iraqi Resistance Report for Tuesday, 26 July 2005.)
