こういう動きに対抗できる、文化面での良識的な市民運動にも取り組んでいく必

「日本の『嫌韓流』は警戒心理・劣等意識の発露」ＮＹＴ紙
米紙ニューヨーク・タイムズは、１９日、日本で売れている『マンガ嫌韓流』
と『マンガ中国入門−やっかいな隣人の研究』について、韓国・中国を警戒する
心理と西洋に対する日本人の劣等感を示すもの、と指摘した。
同紙は「かつてアジアの経済・外交・文化を主導していた国という地位に、韓
中両国が挑戦し、日本人の間に新しい韓中嫌悪の情緒が芽生えている」とし、こ
うした見方を示した。同紙は、韓国がサッカーの２００２年・ワールドカップで
ベスト４入りを果たした後、日本で韓国を競争者と認識する気流が作られ、韓流
への反感も広がりはじめた、と紹介している。
そうした気流の底辺には、１９世紀末の明治維新当時、思想家・福沢諭吉が提
唱した「脱亜入欧」思想が働いている、との点も指摘した。「歴史教科書わい曲
の波紋」を起こした極右団体「新しい歴史教科書をつくる会」の名誉会長であり
『マンガ嫌韓流』の執筆に加わった西尾幹二は、脱亜入欧の思想が日本にどれだ
け深く根をおろしているのかを見せてくれる。同氏は「日本は、韓中関係を福沢
が主張した形で引っ張っていくために努めるべき」だと強調した。
ニューヨークタイムズは『マンガ嫌韓流』がこれまで３６万冊も売れ、ベスト
セラーに位置付けられているが、その中に登場する日本人は、一様に西洋人に似
た外見をしている、と指摘した。日本人の意識の中に内在された「脱亜入欧」の
欲求を反映している、というのが同紙の診断。

Ugly Images of Asian Rivals Become Best Sellers in Japan

TOKYO, Nov. 14 - A young Japanese woman in the comic book "Hating the
Korean Wave" exclaims, "It's not an exaggeration to say that Japan
built the South Korea of today!" In another passage the book states
that "there is nothing at all in Korean culture to be proud of."
In another comic book, "Introduction to China," which portrays the
Chinese as a depraved people obsessed with cannibalism, a woman of
Japanese origin says: "Take the China of today, its principles, thought,
literature, art, science, institutions. There's nothing attractive."
The two comic books, portraying Chinese and Koreans as base peoples and
advocating confrontation with them, have become runaway best sellers in
Japan in the last four months.
In their graphic and unflattering drawings of Japan's fellow Asians and
in the unapologetic, often offensive contents of their speech bubbles,
the books reveal some of the sentiments underlying Japan's worsening
relations with the rest of Asia.
They also point to Japan's longstanding unease with the rest of Asia and
its own sense of identity, which is akin to Britain's apartness from the
Continent. Much of Japan's history in the last century and a half has
been guided by the goal of becoming more like the West and less like
Asia. Today, China and South Korea's rise to challenge Japan's position
as Asia's economic, diplomatic and cultural leader is inspiring renewed
xenophobia against them here.
