Ninwa Province.

Tall ‘Afar.

Residents return to ruins, humanitarian disaster, following American offensive on their city.

In the wake of a savage US offensive on the northern Iraqi city of Tall ‘Afar, residents have begun returning to their city, only to find that their homes have frequently been destroyed, that no water is available and that it is up to them to generate their own electricity if they need energy.

Quds Press reported Thursday that returning residents have been shocked at the scale of destruction wreaked on the homes and shops in city by the US onslaught. Hasan Agha of the as-Saray district of Tall ‘Afar told the Quds Press correspondent: “I found my home totally destroyed. There was nothing left of it but a couple mounds. In fact I could hardly tell where it was because all the houses around were totally demolished too; the ruins of one piled on top of the ruins of another.”

The residents of the city face a whole number of severe difficulty, as most basic services are no longer available because of the US military campaign. The water pipelines and electricity have stopped functioning almost completely. Returning residents therefore conserve what water they have, for fear the critical situation can only worsen.

Most buildings in the city have been reduced to rubble, Quds Press reported, following the ferocious US bombing and shelling that lasted for days on end. Many families have been forced to live in tents pitched atop the mounds of rubble that once were their homes. Al-Hajj Muhammad described the situation, saying: “We always used to see pictures of our Palestinian brothers living on the ruins of their homes and feel sorry for them. We never expected that the time would come when we would suffer the same thing.”

In the rest of Iraq, electricity comes on only for a few hours each day. In what is left of Tall ‘Afar there is no electricity at all, ever, after the electricity grid was blasted apart by American aircraft in the early days of their offensive. Most residents of the city therefore depend on small generators, but even these can only be used sparingly and for short periods of time because there is a shortage of fuel to power them.

Some Sunni residents of Tall ‘Afar accuse the US-installed regime ミ with Shi‘i sectarian party chief Ibrahim Ja‘fari at its head ミ of sectarian discrimination and not fulfilling pledges. ‘Abd ar-Rahman Abu Mu‘tazz told Quds Press: “The government said that it would compensate people for the destruction, that it had set aside sums of money for those whose houses were destroyed, and that it would work to restore services quickly. But none of that has proved true. Tall ‘Afar still lives in the ruins left by the American and Iraqi army forces. There are a few rebuilding projects, but they’re all only in the Shi‘i parts of town. This sectarian behavior is only going to make things get worse, and it is the government that is responsible.”

Sinjar.

Resistance ambushes patrol of Iraqi puppet “national guards” early Thursday morning.

Iraqi Resistance forces attacked a patrol of the puppet so-called “Iraqi National Guards” in Sinjar, west of Mosul in northern Iraq at 7:30am Thursday morning.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported eyewitnesses in Sinjar as saying that Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons ambushed the patrol sparking a firefight that lasted about 20 minutes. In the course of the fighting the Resistance destroyed two personnel carriers belonging to the “National Guards,” killing five of the puppet guards and wounding another four of them.

Al-Basrah Province.

Safwan.

Four US troops reported killed when bomb blows US military vehicle off bridge.

In a dispatch posted at 9:20am Thursday morning Mecca time, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US vehicle in the city of Safwan on the Iraqi-Kuwaiti frontier.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in al-Basrah reported an eyewitness as saying that a group of US vehicles were coming from Kuwait along the highway to Baghdad and as they went up a bridge that links Safwan with the highway, a bomb exploded.

The blast blew a US vehicle off the bridge, killing four US soldiers and wounding several more, witnesses said.

An official US spokesman admitted that one US soldier was killed and another wounded in the attack.

The Mafakrat al-Islam correspondent reported that for two months the southern city of al-Basrah has been witnessing continuous attacks on the occupation forces, the British troops being attacked several times in al-Basrah. Vehicles belonging to the US and British consulates have also been frequent targets.
