The fida’i fighter drove in at high speed and blew up near the American column, even though the US troops opened fire at him to try to stop him as he approached.

The explosion completely destroyed one of the US vehicles, killing three American soldiers and wounding two more US troops, the witnesses said.

The explosion killed one Iraqi puppet soldier and wounded four other troops, one of them an American.

After the blast, US forces backed up by Iraqi puppet army troops surrounded the area and arrested two civilians who happened to be nearby at the time.

The al-Mada’in correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the “Shock Troops” closed all roads in the region and carried out house-to-house raids and arrests of Sunni Arabs, taking at least 30 youths into custody.

Although the al-Mada’in and Salman Bak area are home to a mixed population of Sunni and Shi‘i Iraqis, the waves of arrests usually affect only the Sunnis, Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent noted.

The witnesses said that the explosion disabled one American vehicle, bringing the column to a halt. At that point, Resistance fighters opened fire with an 82mm mortar, destroying one American personnel carrier and killing or wounding about seven US troops.

Al-Basrah Province.

Al-Basrah.

British, Danish occupation forces mount massive campaign of arrests of former Shi‘i allies in several districts of al-Basrah as tension mounts in city, against background of suspected Iranian involvement.

In a dispatch posted at 3:20pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that British and Danish occupation troops had carried out a new wave or arrests in al-Basrah on Friday night and Saturday morning. Witnesses reported that the campaign focused on the northern districts of al-Harithah, al-Qurnah, and Karmat ‘Ali in the northern part of the city.

Among those picked up in the British-Danish sweep was the engineer ‘Uday ‘Awwad Kazim, the official in charge of electric power distribution in the occupation-installed provincial government of al-Basrah.

Following the arrest, employees and associates of the local electricity department in al-Basrah issued a statement ミ a copy of which was obtained by Mafkarat al-Islam ミ in which they condemned the arrest of their director and threatened to hold a demonstration on Sunday outside the British consulate. The electricity department staff gave the British occupation forces 24 hours to release their director and at the same time asked the occupation-installed al-Basrah provincial assembly to intervene quickly to resolve the crisis.

An eyewitness told Mafkarat al-Islam that British and Danish forces had surrounded other areas of northern al-Basrah as well on Saturday morning, presumably in order to carry out arrests there as well.

Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent reported that sources that asked not to be identified had stated that the arrested electricity distribution director for the province, ‘Uday ‘Awwad Kazim, was a member of the Sayyid ash-Shuhada’ Movement and had strong ties to Iranian intelligence. Such claims could not be confirmed, however, particularly as the British occupation maintained a blackout on information regarding its mass arrest campaign.

The sweep in the al-Harithah, al-Qurnah, Karmat ‘Ali, and possibly other districts followed an earlier wave of arrests of puppet-regime security service intelligence officers and puppet police in a sweep of the al-Ma‘qal area in northern al-Basrah. The British had arrested 15 “suspects” in that sweep, according to an earlier dispatch posted by Mafkarat al-Islam at 10:10am Mecca time Saturday morning..

Although the exact reasons for the arrests were unknown, local sources noted that the British campaign of arrests was taking place at a time when there had been numerous charges that Iran was funding Shi‘i groups in southern Iraq to carry out acts of sabotage and assassination with the aim of aggravating a sense of sectarian terror, making it appear that Sunni sectarians were behind such attacks.

The incident also followed the crisis that arose between the British and their own Iraqi puppet forces that accompanied an incident in September in which Iraqi puppet security forces arrested British intelligence operatives found to be carrying explosives apparently with the aim of some sort of sabotage. British forces later forced the release of their spies after Iraqi demonstrators set fire to two British tanks. A state of tension has prevailed between the British occupation forces on the one side and the local Shi‘i sectarian forces supposedly aligned with them on the other.

In developments whose background is still unclear, two members of the Badr Brigades have been assassinated in the last 48 hours, informed sources who wished to remain anonymous told Mafkarat al-Islam. Eyewitnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that one of the Brigade members was found dead in his bed at home, and the body of the other was found in a street in al-Basrah.

The Badr Brigades are the armed wing of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) whose forces invaded Iraq together with the Americans and British in 2003. Since the invasion they have served as the backbone within the Anglo-American-recruited puppet police and security administration. Strongly tied to the parties in the puppet “government” of Ibrahim al-Ja‘fari, they also maintain close ties to Iran.

The Iraqi Resistance regards the Badr Brigades as part of the occupation and its stooges and regularly targets their personnel. It was unclear, however, if the recent killings of Badr Brigade members in al-Basrah were the work of the Resistance or were somehow related to the rising tension between the Brigades and their British patrons. No Resistance organization has claimed responsibility for the killings, Mafkarat al-Islam noted.

Resistance fires at British helicopter, forcing it to flee Friday night.

Iraqi Resistance fighters opened fire on a British helicopter in the Dawr ad-Dubbat area north of al-Basrah at 10:30pm Friday night, forcing the aircraft to release a flare (to deflect heat-seeking missiles) and then flee.
