Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigade militiamen continue terrorizing Sunni residents of an-Nasiriyah for second day in a row Saturday morning.

Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigade forces on Saturday morning carried out house-to-house raids on Sunni residents of the southern Iraqi city of an-Nasiriyah, robbing the householders of their valuables and arresting more than 70 individuals without charge. It was the second day of sectarian raids and robberies.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that 17 bodies of Sunni citizens, meanwhile, have been found mutilated with signs of torture from burning with fire, electricity and boiling water on them.

In an exclusive statement to Mafkarat al-Islam from the Suq ash-Sahykh area of an-Nasiriyah, Sunni religious leader Shaykh ‘Umar al-Marsumi said that Badr Brigade members and puppet “Interior Ministry Shock Troops” had carried out arrests and house raids on Sunnis in the area without any legal justification. The Shaykh said that the householders were robbed of their valuables and personal property, and all men in the homes were arrested. The Badr Brigade members beat women on sensitive parts of their bodies as their husbands and brothers, already bound were made to watch helplessly, the Shaykh told Mafkarat al-Islam.

The Shaykh said that a deputation of Sunnis had gone on Friday night to the puppet governor to try to find out the reason for the raids and arrests of Sunni youths, but the governor refused to meet them. The governor ordered his office manager to trhow them out of the government office building. In response, the Sunni residents of an-Nasiriyah resolved to issue an open letter to the world to ask for help, particularly appealing to the consciences of Muslims and Arabs to stand by them.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent noted that the Badr Brigades had done the same thing two months earlier in the city of as-Samawah in an effort to get Sunni residents to leave town so that they ミ the Badr Brigades ミ could seize their houses and take possession of them.

Al-Basrah Province.

Al-Basrah.

Tension rises in al-Basrah as Shi‘i sectarian parties engage in armed clashes with each other over distribution of roles in local puppet administration.

Eyewitnesses and the local Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported Saturday that the southern Iraqi city of a-Basrah was tense following a night of intermittent shooting of light and medium weapons in various parts of the city.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the headquarters of the “Islamic Virtue Party” ミ a Shi‘i sectarian party to which the local puppet governor belongs ミ came under attack, as did the puppet governor’s office building and the puppet police headquarters in the city.

The latest clashes follow raids by the Iraqi puppet police on the headquarters of other Shi‘i sectarian parties ミ the Thar Allah and Baqiyat Allah movements. The puppet police also arrested Sayyid Yusuf, an official in the Thar Allah movement, along ih 35 members of the Baqiyat Allah Shi‘i movement as well during those recent raids, which were the first instance of the local puppet police forces going after rival Shi‘i parties, also supporters of the occupation.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that local political observers believe that the clashes represent a settling of old scores between rival pro-occupation Shi‘i sectarian groups in the run up to the American-backed “elections” slated for December. Most of the differences between the rival groups center on the distribution of puppet government offices and on the assignment of political and financial roles to the different parties in the puppet administration of al-Basrah. Differences between religious Shi‘i sectarian groups are said to have intensified after Sunni candidates won elections in the areas of al-Faw and Abu al-Khasib, and after the victory of the pro-American “Communist Party” in the elections to the district council of al-Qurnah, a city 100km north of al-Basrah.

Meanwhile, an unknown armed group attacked the house of Fu’ad al-Hamdani a Sunni member of the municipal council of Abu al-Khasib and a prominent tribal and public figure. The attack was apparently a part of a plan to kidnap al-Hamdani in a civilian car. Al-Hamdani was not home at the time of the attack, however.
