Israeli Nuclear Whistle Blower, Mordechai Vanunu, Who Appeared This Week On Greg Szymanski's Radio Show, Arrested Friday Near Jerusalem For Parole Violations

Authorities unclear why he was arrested but it may include Vanunu's defiance of his gag order to talk with the press, including his only recent U.S. talk radio show appearance on the Republic Broadcast Network.

Mordechai Vanunu, a former Israeli nuclear technician and whistleblower, was arrested near Jerusalem Friday for a parole violation as he traveled on a bus north of the holy city.

Vanunu, 51, was identified and searched at the A-Ram inspection checkpoint where authorities claim he was violating the terms of his parole after serving an 18-year prison term for violating state secrets.

Authorities did not give specifics regarding the arrest, saying Vanunu was required to notify authorities anytime he planned on leaving Jerusalem. Under the terms of parole, he has also been prohibited from talking to the press, something he has openly disregarded from day he was released, adding he was “not going to allow the Israeli authorities to stop his freedom of speech.”

Vanunu was released from an Israeli prison near Tel Aviv in April 2004 for divulging what authorities claimed was classified information regarding Israel’s nuclear weapons program and its nuclear reactor in Dimona, where he worked for nine years as a scientist.

The Sunday Times of London published a full account of Vanunu’s story, calling the attention to the world in 1986 that Israel has already constructed 200 nuclear atomic bombs. He verified his claim with photographs of the Dimona site, verified by experts who eventually confirmed that Israel had nuclear weapons.

Vanunu was arrested in Rome at the time the article was being published to Italy by a combination Mossad and CIA undercover kidnapping. Once he returned, Vanunu claimed he was not given a fair trial and quickly sentenced to a maximum term for treason as well as being termed a foreign spy.

After the Friday arrest at the Jerusalem checkpoint, Vanunu has been unavailable for comment and did not return emails or answer his telephone.

But last Monday he gave his U.S. only radio interview when he appeared on Greg Szymanski’s “Investigative Journal” on the Republic Broadcasting Network where he said Israel’s nuclear arsenal had at least doubled to 400 nuclear weapons. His entire interview can be heard at www.rbnlive.com in the archives section.

“If President Bush wants to find nuclear weapons in the Middle East, all he has to do is come to Israel. I am not going to let Israel keep me from exercising my freedom of speech,” said Vanunu during the radio interview. “I am waiting for my January hearing where the Israeli judge will determine if I go back to jail for talking to the foreign press.

“But I will not stop talking as what else can they do to me after spending 18 years in jail, 11 years in solitary confinement, for doing nothing wrong. All I ever wanted to do was alert the world to the terrible nuclear threat Israel presented to the whole Middle East and the world.”
Vanunu has been held since being released from prison under what is termed “state arrest” and has been prohibited from leaving the country. Upon his arrest Friday, authorities were unclear whether it also involved his open violations of talking to the press, including his recent appearance on the Republic Broadcasting Network.

One of 11 children of Moroccan Jewish parents who emigrated to Israel in 1963, Vanunu served in the Israeli army and then worked in the Dimona nuclear "research center" in the Negev Desert near his home at Beersheba.

The facility harbored an underground plutonium separation plant operated in strictest secrecy. As the years went by he grew increasingly troubled as he realized his work was part of Israel's nuclear bomb program. In 1985, before leaving Dimona, he took extensive photographs inside the factory in order to document the truth for his fellow citizens and the entire world.

Israeli agents were alerted of Vanunu's intentions to publish the story. Even before they had lured him from Britain, abducted him in Italy, and dumped his drugged body onto an Israeli cargo vessel bound for Israel.

In the following months he was charged with espionage and treason and convicted at a closed-door trial. All legal appeals were exhausted, and he was consistently denied parole or probation.

For the first 11 1/2 years of his imprisonment, Vanunu was held in solitary confinement, denied human contact except with his guards, a lawyer, a priest, and the occasional visits of his siblings. This treatment was condemned by Amnesty International as " cruel, inhuman, and degrading."

On March 12, 1998, he was released into the prison population but was still subject to many restrictions - no contact with Palestinian prisoners, no phone use and his mail was censored. During the last 6 years he spent in prison, Vanunu was also able to have occasional visits with Nicholas and Mary Eoloff, the St. Paul, Minnesota couple who adopted him in the fall of 1997.

Despite years of isolation in prison, Vanunu remains steadfast in his belief that what he did was necessary and right. He was released on April 21, 2004, but the Israeli government imposed severe restrictions on his movement and speech, including the condition that he is not allowed to leave the country.

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel represented Vanunu in an appeal of the restrictions to the High Court. In July, the Court rejected the appeal, on the grounds that Vanunu "might be in possession of additional secrets he had not yet revealed". Vanunu continues to assert that he has no more secrets, and told everything he knew to the London Sunday Times when he blew the whistle in 1986.

At a mandated six-month review in October, 2004, the restrictions were renewed.

Last November 11, Israeli police entered St. George's Cathedral, arresting Vanunu. He was questioned about his interviews with foreign press, which he conducted in open defiance of the restrictions, believing they were in violation of his freedom of speech.

Vanunu was also detained last Christmas Eve, as he attempted to enter the off-limits West Bank city of Bethlehem for worship at the Church of the Nativity. He was released several hours later being given five days of house arrest.

Vanunu’s case was then reviewed by the Israeli court last April where the charges were dropped but then immediately prosecutors filed new charges under a different law prohibiting contact with the media concerning matters of national security.

Prior to his Friday arrest, Vanunu was scheduled to appear for a January hearing where he faces a possible six months in prison if convicted.
