In a dispatch posted at 3:30pm Mecca time Wednesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters had attacked a prison run by the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops” in the al-Kazimiyah area of northern Baghdad.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in the puppet police as saying that about 20 Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons attacked the prison. Several prisoners joined in the attack, most of them Sunni Arabs. Some were able to seize weapons from the prison guards.

The source said that several prison guards and four “Shock Troops” were killed and five more wounded in the Resistance assault. Among the dead was an officer in the prison guard unit. In addition, however, 20 unarmed prisoners died when the guards opened fire indiscriminately on the prisoners during the attack. Three prisoners were able to escape.

Quds Press, for its part, quoted a source in the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry” as admitting that 20 prisoners were indeed shot to death by the guards. The source claimed, however, that the killing occurred during what he described as an “attempted escape.” The “Interior Ministry” source claimed that a prisoner grabbed a weapon of one of the guards when the inmates were being let out of their cells for recreation, prompting the other guards to shoot the prisoners.

Quds Press reported witnesses in the neighborhood, however, as saying that Resistance fighters armed with light and medium weapons had attacked the facility and when the guards called in help from the puppet “Shock Troops,” the latter, on arriving on the scene, were met with fierce gunfire and explosives fired by the attackers.
