Chile's students protest school conditions
Bus fares, exam fees among issues

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) -- A massive student protest over bus fares and exam fees shut hundreds of high schools in Chile on Tuesday as more than 300,000 students stayed away from classes and forced the government to promise to improve education.

The school occupations and marches have gathered strength since they began more than two weeks ago in the capital and then spread to provincial areas, where students complained of classrooms with broken windows, too few teachers and bathrooms with no toilet paper.

Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse students marching in downtown Santiago on Tuesday morning.

Students now pay the equivalent of $40 to take a college entrance exam and about 20 cents to take a bus. Protesters say that both should be free.

"We are protesting on behalf of our school. The bathrooms are disgusting, you can't even take a shower in the locker room, and they don't do anything about it," said Bernardo Ferrada, 15, his nose and eyes burning from tear gas.

Ferrada said he and 25 other students from the Arturo Prats high school in the middle-class neighborhood of Puente Alto went downtown to march while the rest of the students continued their occupation at the school.

Most public schools are occupied by students and are not holding classes.

Even students at elite private schools, like the one attended by the youngest daughter of President Michelle Bachelet, attended school but held solidarity events on Tuesday instead of classes.

The protests forced the Bachelet government, which took office in March, to back down from earlier refusals to negotiate with students who take over schools.

On Tuesday, Education Minister Martin Zilic said the government would meet with student leaders to hear their demands.

The well-organized student leaders in their gray and blue school uniforms have taken over the nightly news and the public agenda in the last two weeks.

In recent decades Chile has expanded school coverage to most of the population, but students say quality has lagged.

"We have not improved the quality of education as we wanted. The big new challenge for us is closing the quality gap," Deputy Education Minister Pilar Romanguera acknowledged in a recent radio interview.

Chile is one of Latin America's wealthiest nations and the students say they should be seeing more benefits from windfall profits from sky high prices for copper, Chile's biggest export.

Though there has been sporadic vandalism in a few marches the protests have been mostly peaceful, with students staying around the clock in the schools eating food brought to them by sympathetic parents. Teachers have also been largely supportive of the student movement.
