The Hit correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at 3pm local time Tuesday afternoon, a large American force attacked the schools of Hit in which more than 200 Iraqi men, women, and children from ar-Ramadi have found temporary refuge. The American troops searched through the refugees’ belongings, breaking what few household possessions that they had managed to carry with them on their trek to Hit.

The correspondent reported that the Americans arrested a number of the refugees, “only to interrogate them,” they claimed.

In an exclusive interview, Muhammad al-Hitawi the Director of the Hit Municipality told Mafkarat al-Islam that the occupation prevented convoys from the Iraqi Red Crescent to bring in aid to the refugee families. Al-Hitawi said that the Red Crescent had brought medicine and food but the American occupation forces prevented them from delivering the supplies to the needy families who are in desperate straits for lack of any such provisions.

Russian parliamentarian says Russian hostages alive.

The staff members of the Russian embassy who were abducted in Baghdad on 3 June are still alive, the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Leonid Slutsky announced on Tuesday, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported. The State Duma is Russia’s legislative lower house.

“The Russian diplomats taken hostage in Baghdad are alive. I have such facts,” Slutsky told journalists Tuesday, commenting on reports that a group in Iraq had made demands in exchange for the diplomats’ release.

Novosti reported that Slutsky would not specify where exactly he had obtained the information on the Russian hostages. Regarding the demands allegedly made by the captors, Slutsky told the press: “their demands cannot be fulfilled. This information must be verified, but in the event that it is confirmed, there must be negotiations; we must make every effort to save our staff members,” Slutsky said.

Novosti reported the Russian Foreign Ministry press department as saying that there is “no new information on the fate of the Russian diplomats.”

Earlier in the day Novosti quoted the speaker of the upper house of Russia’s parliament as saying that there could be no talks with terrorists who seized Russian diplomats in Iraq and no concessions would be made.

A Web site often used by Islamist militant groups claimed Monday that the Mujahideen Shura Council, a group linked the al-Qa‘idah organization in Iraq, had kidnapped four employees of the Russian Embassy in Baghdad on June 3.

“Russia has always held the position that talks on political terms with terrorists are out of the question,” Novosti quoted Sergei Mironov as saying.

Mironov said however that Russia would do everything possible to secure the release of the diplomats. “We never leave our people,” he said.

One Russian diplomat was killed and four others kidnapped when unidentified armed men attacked an embassy car in the Iraqi capital on 3 June. The kidnappers are yet to make any ransom or other demands.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has repeatedly called for the immediate release of the diplomats. Earlier Tuesday he urged the kidnappers to remember which country they represented.

“Russia has made all possible efforts to avoid the current situation in Iraq,” Lavrov said, adding that victimizing Russian diplomats was unfair and ran counter to the interests of the Iraqi people.

Lavrov said Tuesday that reports of al-Qa‘idah’s involvement in the kidnapping were being studied "with all seriousness.”

“We are verifying [this information] using all channels that we have opened to find the diplomats as quickly as possible,” Sergei Lavrov told journalists.

Also on Tuesday, the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council ミ Russia’s legislative upper house ミ issued a demand for the immediate release of the hostages.

In a statement issued by the puppet “Joint Coordination Center,” the American occupation forces claimed that the raid targeted a “terrorist nest” but gave no further details.

Later in the day, the Association of Muslim Scholars, the highest Sunni Muslim religious organization in the occupied country, denounced the American attack, which it said began with a bombardment of a house and chicken coop and then ended with an airborne landing in which US troops killed 13 civilians and abducted four wounded people, one a boy aged only 10 years.
