Reports: Israeli troops killed in Lebanon 24 minutes ago

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah fighters battled Wednesday to stop Israeli forces from capturing a southern Lebanese town, leaving several Israeli soldiers dead, Arab TV stations reported.

Al-Arabiya, a Dubai-based satellite TV channel, said 12 soldiers were killed as Israeli forces tried to gain control of the town. The Qatar-based satellite TV station Al-Jazeera reported that nine Israelis had been killed and 25 wounded.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli military would say that no more than several soldiers had been wounded in heavy fighting at Bint Jbail, which lies 2 1/2 miles north of the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Israel Radio reported that "at least 10 Israeli soldiers had been hit" in heavy fighting against 200 Hezbollah guerrillas in the town. It did not specify how many Israelis were killed.

A senior Hezbollah official, Mahmoud Komati, told The Associated Press Wednesday that Israeli forces had managed to seize a few points inside Bint Jbail, but had not yet taken the town center.

The Israeli army said several Hezbollah fighters had taken cover in a local mosque.

Hezbollah said "violent confrontations" were taking place between its fighters and Israeli forces attempting to advance toward a hospital in Bint Jbail, which holds the largest Shiite Muslim community in the border area. Hezbollah draws its support from the Shiites.

Fighting has been heavy for days around the border towns of Aitaroun, Maroun al-Ras and Bint Jbail, where Israeli forces are trying to eliminate the guerrillas who have been firing rockets into Israel. The area controls the high ground in the central sector of the Lebanese-Israeli border.

Bint Jbail is a symbolically important town for Hezbollah as it was a center of resistance to the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon in 1982-2000.

Hizbullah Ambushes IDF Forces in Bint Jbeil; 10 Casualties
10:33 Jul 26, '06 / 1 Av 5766
by Hillel Fendel

The battle for the Hizbullah stronghold of Bint Jbeil, 3 miles from the Lebanese-Israeli border, sparked again this morning into a major conflagration. The wounded have not yet been evacuated.

The IDF announced on Tuesday that it had completed the takeover of the village, which served as the capital of Hizbullah in southern Lebanon. Despite the announcement, it was known that dozens of Hizbullah terrorists remained in the area - and in fact, around 5:00 this morning they surprised the Israeli forces. Ten casualties have been reported, and the battle rages on. Rescue forces are unable to begin evacuating the wounded because of the heavy Hizbullah fire. The terrorists are firing RPG (rocket propelled grenade) missiles from within built-up urban areas.

The IDF had left a narrow corridor open for the terrorists to escape, hoping to engage them further to the north. Some 15 carloads of terrorists did in fact leave, but many remained to fight. The IDF continues to hold a numerical and qualitative advantage.

Givati and Golani Brigade forces are participating in the fighting, as well as Egoz unit soldiers. Replacements have been brought in to spell the soldiers who have been fighting for several days with little rest.

Hizbullah is a faction in the Lebanese government, but is considered a government-within-a-government in the south of the country - and its capital is in Bint Jbeil.

Meanwhile, Katyusha rockets fell around 10:00 in Haifa and environs, and one man is reported seriously wounded from a rocket that hit his car and burst into flames.

Earlier this morning, Katyushas were fired from southern Lebanon towards Tzfat and other Galilee areas. The residents are still under instructions to remain in protected areas.

Lebanon battles rage: 13 IDF killed Wednesday
Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:59am ET

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Thirteen Israeli soldiers were reported killed in fierce fighting with Hizbollah guerrillas in Lebanon on Wednesday and world diplomats in Rome called for a lasting, but not immediate, ceasefire in the 15-day-old war.

Participants at the crisis conference on Lebanon pledged to work urgently for a "lasting, permanent and sustainable" ceasefire, but did not demand that the fighting stop now.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the conference had agreed that a U.N.-mandated international force was needed.

NATO's chief said it was too early to discuss a possible role for the alliance, as suggested by Israel.

The Rome conference agreed to convene a donors' meeting for Lebanon and urged Israel to exercise restraint in its assault, launched after Hizbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight in a cross-border raid on July 12.

In the latest fighting, Lebanese security sources said guerrillas ambushed an Israeli force advancing on the town of Bint Jbeil, four km (2.5 miles) from the Israel-Lebanon border.

Hizbollah sources said the Israeli force was cut off and most of its vehicles were destroyed. "Our men can hear the screams of their wounded calling for help," one source said.

Al Jazeera television said 13 soldiers had been killed. If confirmed, the toll would be the Israeli army's worst one-day loss since it launched its Lebanon offensive two weeks ago.

GAZA OFFENSIVE

In the Gaza Strip, scene of another Israeli offensive, Israeli forces killed 14 Palestinians, including nine militants and a three-year-old girl, in fighting across the territory.

Israel has killed 133 Palestinians in a month-long campaign to recover a captured soldier and stop rocket fire from Gaza.

Its war against Hizbollah has killed at least 418 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians. At least 42 Israelis have also died.

The battles occurred as foreign ministers, including Rice, met in Rome to discuss how to end the conflict and bring humanitarian aid to Lebanon.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan had said he wanted the meeting to urge the Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire ― an idea resisted by Washington, which wants a "durable solution" first.

Annan said it was important to include Iran and Syria to reach an agreement to end fighting in Lebanon. Rice has blamed the two countries, Hizbollah's main allies, for stoking the conflict.

Israel, Iran and Syria were not invited to the Rome talks.

Hizbollah vowed not to accept "humiliating" truce terms and to take its rocket strikes deeper into Israel. Hours later, more missiles hit the port of Haifa, wounding several people, police said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert strove to limit diplomatic damage from the killing of four U.N. observers in an air strike on their post in south Lebanon on Tuesday, telling Annan he was sorry at the deaths, but expressing shock at the U.N. chief's suggestion the attack was deliberate.

China condemned the air raid, in which a Chinese observer was killed. The others were from Finland, Austria and Canada.

BUILDING FLATTENED

U.N. officials said the raid flattened the building housing the observers. Initial U.N. assessments suggested Israel had used precision-guided munitions, diplomats in Jerusalem said.

Israeli bombing has forced an estimated 750,000 people to flee their homes. Many are still trapped in war zones.

The first U.N. aid convoy left Beirut for the southern port of Tyre. The 10 trucks were carrying 90 tonnes of supplies, including enough medicine for 50,000 people for three months.

A Jordanian military plane landed at Beirut airport to evacuate badly wounded people from among 2,000 hurt in Lebanon so far. It was the first jet to land at the airport since Israeli planes bombed runways on July 13.

Israel, with tacit U.S. approval, has said it will press on with its assault. It also plans to enforce a narrow no-go zone reaching two km (1.2 miles) into south Lebanon with air strikes and artillery fire until international forces are deployed.

Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, whose group ignited the war by capturing two Israeli soldiers in a raid into Israel on July 12, rejected U.S. ceasefire conditions

Olmert said he wanted the war to end soon, but only after Israel had achieved its goals, a parliamentary official said.
