1) Two Marines with N.C. ties killed

WASHINGTON Two Marines with ties to North Carolina are reported dead this week in Iraq.
Staff Sergeant Gordon Solomon, who is based at Camp Lejeune, died Thursday in combat. The government did not list a cause of death for the 35-year-old of Fairborn, Ohio.
Also killed Thursday was Staff Sergeant Dwayne Williams. Relatives say they were told the Baltimore native was dismantling a bomb when it went off. Williams' wife and four-year-old son are staying with relatives in North Carolina.
An uncle who helped raise Williams says he was one in a long line of family members who served in uniform. Robert Williams of Henderson says the chain goes back to World War One and includes two of his own sons, who are also Marines. He says Dwayne is the first to die in a war.

3)Marine from Milford killed in Iraq

HARTFORD, Conn. ― A marine from Connecticut was killed in combat Friday in Iraq, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Saturday.

Cpl. Jordan C. Pierson, 21, of Milford, died during combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division in Plainville.

No additional information was immediately available.

Pierson was the second marine from the 25th Marine Regiment to be killed in three weeks. Lance Cpl. Kurt Dechen, 24, of Springfield, Vt., was on a foot patrol in Fallujah, Iraq, on Aug. 3 when his unit came under fire and he was shot.

Thirty-two servicemen and women and civilians with Connecticut ties have died since March 2002 in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pierson and another serviceman were hit with shrapnel earlier this year after a grenade exploded near them, The Hartford Courant reported in May.

Three US soldiers killed in Iraq

Last Updated: 8/26/2006 4:06:28 PM

Three American soldiers are among the latest victims of violence in Iraq.

According to the U-S military, all died in or near Baghdad. One was shot dead by gunmen who attacked his patrol. Another was killed by a roadside bomb. And a third fell during a raid the military says was aimed at capturing "foreign terrorists" ― two of whom were also killed in a firefight.

Elsewhere around Iraq, car bombings killed at least four civilians. And a bomb hidden in trash killed four laborers.
