Why Israel's Campaign in Lebanon is Failing: An Interview with Mark Weber

This interview was published in the Tehran Times, a leading English-language daily paper in Iran, in the issue of August 1, 2006. It was distributed by the Mehr news agency, and posted on the agency's website in English and in Farsi. The interview was also broadcast on Iran state radio.

Hezbollah fights with remarkable determination against Zionist enemy

TEHRAN, Aug. 1 (MNA) -- The Mehr news agency conducted an interview with Mark Weber, director of the Institute for Historical Review in California, about the Zionist state's campaign against Lebanon. This is the text of the interview given on Friday, July 28:

Q: Israel cited the capture of two soldiers as a pretext to launch an invasion of Lebanon. What are Israel's goals in this campaign?

A: After Hezbollah fighters killed eight Israeli soldiers and captured two others during an action on July 12, Israel launched an attack against Lebanon that in its brutality and destructive ferocity has shocked the world.ハ

Although Israel initially claimed that it was merely seeking to recapture its two "kidnapped" soldiers, it quickly became obvious that this was merely a pretext for a well-organized campaign that had been planned well in advance. More than a year ago, reports The San Francisco Chronicle, a senior Israeli officer explained details of the current campaign in meetings with U.S. officials.

This campaign has parallels with Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, when Zionist leaders cited an assassination attempt against the Israeli ambassador in London as a pretext for a devastating attack.

In the current campaign, Israel has several objectives.

First, the Zionist leaders are determined to smash Hezbollah by killing as many of its fighters as possible, by demolishing its infrastructure in southern Lebanon, and by destroying its weapons arsenal. Israelis want to prevent Hezbollah from launching rocket attacks against them from Lebanon, and they seek revenge for Hezbollahユs role in forcing Zionist occupation forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000.

Israel's second major goal is to forcefully impress on Lebanon and the other countries in the region that they will be severely punished if their governments permit attacks to be launched against Israel from their territory.

Israel also seems to have additional, but less important objectives. For example, Israelis would welcome the creation of a new "security zone" in southern Lebanon, although they realize that this is not likely.

Finally, Zionist leaders increasingly regard all Arab and Muslim nations as actual or potential enemies, and therefore Israel is wary of any Arab or Muslim country that is stable, prosperous and strong. Accordingly, Israel welcomes the spread of chaos, poverty and strife in Lebanon, Iraq, and all other Arab and Muslim countries.

Q: Is Israel achieving its objectives in its Lebanon campaign?

A: Military campaigns often turn out quite differently than those who launch them plan or anticipate. In this case, Israel expected to achieve its goals in a three week "surgical" operation.

While Israel's well-trained and well-equipped military machine can inflict great damage on Hezbollah and Lebanon, this campaign is proving to be a major setback for Israel and the United States, above all because Hezbollah has proven to be a much tougher and more resourceful adversary than the Zionists had expected.

The outnumbered Hezbollah fighters have fought with remarkable determination, spirit and skill against the much better equipped Zionist enemy. Israelis have been surprised by Hezbollah's ability to strike forcefully against targets in northern Israel. Moreover, Israelユs stated goal of getting back its captured soldiers is more elusive than ever.

The longer this campaign drags on, the worse for Israel and the United States.

Writing in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the prominent Israeli journalist Gideon Levy warned that "every day increases international criticism of Israel and hatred of it." In fact, he went on, "the images from Beirut are causing Israel enormous damage, and rightly so. Not only in the streets of the Arab world is more and more hatred being sown, but also in the West. Not only hundreds of thousands of Lebanese but tens of thousands of Westerners fleeing from Lebanon are contributing to the depiction of Israel as a violent, crude and destructive state."

Around the world, ever more millions of people have been shocked by Israel's brutal contempt for human life, morality and international law, and by Washington's unconditional backing for Israel's ferocious campaign.

This campaign is wrecking what remains of U.S. credibility in the Middle East, and is severely harming America's stature elsewhere in the world. The U.S. has acted with such arrogance, deceit and hypocrisy, and for so many years, that its promises are nearly worthless. Washingtonユs claims of concern for peace, justice and democracy in the Middle East are, more obviously than ever, fraudulent and insincere.

Washington's allies in the region -- especially Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia -- are also losing popular support and legitimacy.

This Lebanon war is further dividing the world into a U.S.-Israel alliance, on one side, and the rest of the world, on the other. This global division is accelerating not merely because people everywhere are appalled by U.S.-Israel arrogance, brutality and lies, but also because Zionist interests are ever more obviously contrary to those of all other nations.

It is also more obvious to many more people, even in the U.S., that America's decades-old support for the Zionist regime is a consequence of the Jewish-Zionist grip on America's political life, and the Jewish-Zionist control of American television, motion pictures, radio and print media.

Contrary to what Israeli and American leaders have been claiming, Hezbollah is not an alien or artificial phenomenon, but rather is a grass roots movement with wide popular support. Israel cannot destroy it without carrying out killings on an impossibly large scale.

Hezbollah needs only to survive to emerge as the victor in this unequal battle.

Q: Has the international community done enough in response to Israel's assault on Lebanon?

A: The world's response to Israel's aggression in Lebanon, and to the death and suffering it has inflicted on the Lebanese people, has been shamefully tepid. This timidity is a consequence of the indifference, corruption, inner weakness and lack of purpose of most of the world's countries, and of the daunting military power and economic strength of the Zionist-controlled United States.
