In a dispatch posted at 2:24pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that following the announcement of the American death sentence against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn, crowds of local people poured out into the streets of ‘Anah to protest the illegal proclamation.

The ‘Anah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that throngs marched through the streets and lanes of the western Iraqi city expressing their rejection of the “verdict.” Although the death sentence was officially pronounced by a “court” created under the aegis of the puppet Iraqi regime imposed on the country by the American occupiers, local residents of ‘Anah characterized the death sentence as a ruling issued by the American occupation forces and their puppet “government.”

As a measure of the depth of their anger, the correspondent reported that the outraged marchers surged towards the headquarters jointly occupied by US occupation troops and their Iraqi puppet army allies in the middle of ‘Anah, defying repeated warnings from the invader troops not to approach the compound.

The witnesses said that the fighting began when Resistance men armed with light and medium weapons ambushed a US patrol at a crossroads on ath-Tharthar Street. At the time of reporting, the battle was still underway and the sound of intense gunfire could be heard.

Baghdad.

Iraqi President Saddam Husayn proclaims “Allahu akbar! ‘Ashat al-Ummah! “God is greatest! Long live the nation!” as US-backed “court” hands down expected death sentence.

In a dispatch posted at 12:12pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the puppet “Supreme Iraqi Criminal Court” presided over by American-appointed “judge” Ra’uf Rashid ‘Abd ar-Rahman handed down its expected “verdict” of “guilty” against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn in the matter of the “ad-Dujayl Case.”

In ad-Dujayl in 1982, 148 local individuals were tried and convicted under Iraqi law of being part of an Iranian-backed plot to kill the president and seize power in Iraq, which was then at war with Iran.

The reading of the sentence had been postponed from 10am local time to 11am and then finally to 12 noon for reasons never explained, Mafkarat al-Islam reported.

The American-run “court” issued a sentence of “death by hanging” against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn and also on his half brother Barzan at-Tikriti who was involved with the Iraqi security apparatus, and ‘Awwad al-Bandar who was the presiding judge at the trial of the would-be assassins in ad-Dujayl.

The US-run “court” issued a sentence of life imprisonment for Iraqi Vice President Taha Yasin Ramadan. It gave sentences of 15 years in prison to three other “defendants” in the ad-Dujayl “case.” The “court” released “defendant” Muhammad al-‘Anzi for “lack of evidence.”

Iraqi President Saddam Husayn, who refused to stand for the “court” before the reading of the “verdict,” responded to the death sentence by proclaiming “Allahu akbar!” “God is greatest!” and “ ‘Ashat al-Ummah!” “Long live the nation!”

President Saddam Husayn went on: “Damn you and your court! God is greatest! Long live the people! Long live the nation! Down with stooges! We are their people; life to us and death to our enemies! Long live the people and death to their enemies!”

The Iraqi President pointed at the US-appointed “judge” and told him that the “verdict” had been issued by the enemies of humanity.

Barzan at-Tikriti and ‘Awwad al-Bandar also shouted their protests at the death sentences. Vice President Taha Yasin Ramadan, given a life sentence, demanded to speak.

Iraqi Baath Party issues statement following US death sentence against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn.

In a dispatch posted at 2:07pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Arab Socialist Baath Party had issued a statement that was being distributed around Baghdad following the announcement of the American death sentence against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn, who is concurrently the General Secretary of the Iraqi Baath.

The statement, a copy of which was obtained by the correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam, said that the statement said:

“Great Iraqi people! Son and daughters of our great Arab Nation! Heroes guarding the passes on every foot of occupied Iraq today! The American-Iranian court of infidelity has issued its order for the execution of imprisoned Presient Saddam Husayn in an attempt by them to extinguish the patriotic revolution of the Iraqi people.”

The statement went on:

“The Arab Baath Socialist Party hails the steadfastness and stance of the Mujahid President, the General Secretary of the Iraqi regional leadership of the Party and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The Party pledges to him that it will continue to cling to the fixed patriotic and pan Arab principles he has laid down. Long live Iraq! Long live Palestine! Eternal mercy for the martyrs of our glorious Arab nation and shame and humiliation to the occupation! Long live the Mujahid leader Saddam Husayn! Allahu akbar! Allahu akbar! Allahu akbar!”

Outraged crowds battle US occupation troops in Baghdad’s al-A‘zamiyah district following announcement of American death sentence against Iraqi President.

In a dispatch posted at 2:19pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that at the time of reporting extremely violent clashes were taking place between American occupation troops and the outraged residents of the Baghdad district of al-A‘zamiyah.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the fighting was concentrated around the cathedral mosque of Imam Abu Hanifah an-Nu‘man, the royal cemetery, Ra’s al-Hawash, and as-Safinah in the district.

Foreign reaction to US-sponsored death sentence varied.

In a dispatch posted at 6:54pm Makkah time Sunday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Tony Snow, spokesman for US President George W. Bush, on behalf of the White House welcomed the death sentence announced by the Iraqi puppet regime “court” which operates under US control.

Earlier, British Sky News reported Sunday that British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett had officially applauded the American death sentence for Iraqi President Saddam Husayn.

Syria attacked the death sentence issued against Saddam Husayn, saying it was “illegal.” The satellite TV station ash-Sharqiyah, which operates under the aegis of the US-installed Iraqi regime reported Syrian Minister of Information Muhsin Bilal as saying that the trial of Saddam Husayn took place under the occupation, which means that it was devoid of legality.

Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Russian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee warned of “catastrophic consequences” from the death sentence announced on Sunday against Saddam Husayn, but expressed doubt that the sentence would ever be carried out.

The Council of Europe however declared its rejection of the “verdict” delivered by the American-managed “court” in Baghdad to be “futile and wrong.”

‘Amr Musa, the General Secretary of the League of Arab States, expressed the view that the death sentence was “a part of the developments that have been going on in Iraq since the American invasion there.”

In a dispatch posted at 2:29pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that, like the British regime, the Iranian government welcomed the death sentence imposed by a US-run “court” on Iraqi President Saddam Husayn. The sentence itself was imposed on the basis of the ad-Dujayl case in which Iranian-backed assassins plotted to kill President Saddam Husayn and overthrow the Iraqi government.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported the Iranian ambassador to the American-installed puppet regime in Baghdad as saying: “Iran welcomes the order to execute Saddam Husayn.”

The Iranian Ambassador, Hasan Kazimi Qummi, went on to say that Iran was “congratulating the people of Iraq” on the order imposed by an occupying power to execute the Iraqi people’s legitimate leader, deposed, captured and imprisoned by an invading army in contravention of all international laws and norms.

The Zionist newspaper Maariv, in keeping with a long-standing Zionist effort to partition Iraq along sectarian lines reported the American death sentence in a manner that stressed the support among some Iraqi Shi‘ah for the puppet regime and its verdict.

The Hebrew paper, as monitored by Mafkarat al-Islam in a dispatch posted at 5:16pm Makkah time Sunday afternoon, focused on pro-American elements and reported on demonstrations of enthusiasm that took place in the Baghdad district known as “Madinat as-Sadr” and quoted the puppet regime spokesman ‘Ali ad-Dabbah as saying that the American verdict had been expected. Maariv also interviewed ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Hakim, the chief of the so-called “Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq” (SCIRI) whose Iranian-trained Badr Brigade armed wing now serves as the backbone of the American-installed puppet police and security forces. Predictably, al-Hakim also welcomed the death sentence imposed by a US-run “court” in Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 7:26pm Makkah time Sunday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Jasim al-Khurafi urged that the American death sentence on Saddam Husayn and other Iraqi leaders on Sunday be carried out without delay.

Kuwait, formerly a part of Iraqi territory, was split off around the turn of the 20th century by Britain, which was keen on securing control of the Arabian Gulf coastline through the establishment of small statelets that would be dependent on London for protection. Iraq moved troops into Kuwait in 1990, deposing the royal house that had been given power by the British. That regime was, however, returned to power in the American invasion of 1991.

Signs, graffiti in Baghdad streets proclaim support for Iraqi President Saddam Husayn.

In a dispatch posted at 11:40am Makkah time Sunday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the streets of Baghdad had filled up with signs and graffiti proclaiming “Long live Saddam!” and promising death to lackey traitors as the time for the announcement of the American-sponsored death sentence against the Iraqi President approached.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that walls of schools and homes and street intersections were covered with signs declaring: “Long live the leader Saddam Husayn!” and “Saddam Husayn is the legitimate leader of Iraq!” Local residents said the graffiti and signs had been done spontaneously, some by Baath Party members and others by ordinary people.

The signs and graffiti were particularly prominent in the Baghdad districts of al-A‘zamiyah, al-Karakh al-Qadimah, and al-‘Amiriyah.

Clearly disturbed by the outpouring of popular support for the Iraqi President, American troops could be seen trying to scratch the writing off the walls and in some cases summoning homeowners to come out and remove the signs from the walls of their houses.

Resistance mortar shell blasts puppet police near “Green Zone” wounding seven Sunday afternoon.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the puppet regime’s press spokesman at the puppet “Interior Ministry,” Jawad al-Bulani, made the announcement. The decision followed news coverage of demonstrations that swept the country after the puppet regime announced a death sentence against Iraqi President Saddam Husayn.

US occupation forces take unprecedented security measures in anticipation of violent reaction to their death sentence on Iraqi President Saddam Husayn. Swarms of unmanned spy planes prowl the skies of the occupied Iraqi capital under lock down by order of the American-backed puppet regime.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported, however, that US occupation troops reinforced their blockade on the occupied Iraqi capital and deployed more troops in predominantly Sunni areas of Baghdad.

The correspondent reported that swarms of unmanned spy planes could be seen prowling the air in the capital, as unprecedented “security” was in evidence around the downtown Baghdad area where the Republican Palace is located ミ the high security district that the Americans have dubbed the “Green Zone.”
